Has the Liam Payne coverage been too intrusive or about right?

mids2019 · 20/10/2024 13:53

I noted a compliant from Cheryl Cole that the media coverage of Liam Payne's death has been too intrusive, salacious and graphic.

I am split on this. While I do feel for Liam's young son that some of the details may be harrowing as he grows up isn't there a public interest for reasonable accurate reporting and not glossing over a lot of the quite disturbing detail.

I was struck by the difference between BBC coverage, 'Liam fell to his death' and the Daily Mail where a huge number of articles concentrated on his behaviour, drug paraphernalia, drunkenness, possible pychosis etc.

What should the balance be in the reporting? Is maintaining dignity of the dead more important than maybe an honest but uncomfortable reporting.

Just stop with the posts on this. It is no one’s business but his families

Weedownmyleg · 20/10/2024 13:55

So you thought you would add to this by starting yet another thread?

Sirzy · 20/10/2024 13:57

It’s in nobody’s interest to know the gory details. People expect too much information now when it’s not needed.

all that should have been in the media is that he had died. Anything else should have been for the family to release if and when they felt it right to do so

Port1aCastis · 20/10/2024 13:58

Very intrusive but you starting yet another thread about a young man's death will just feed the ghouls.
His family have asked for privacy so take heed and let them grieve in private

CheeseWisely · 20/10/2024 13:59

What would you usually expect to see when a member of the public has died in a similar way? One article in the media? 'A British tourist in South America has tragically died falling from a balcony, leaving beind a young son. His death is being investigated by local authorities'.

I think that should more or less cover what is required, and anything over and above that is salacious and unnecessary.

If I'm being generous perhaps with the addition in this case of 'He used to be in a successful pop group, the other members of which have expressed their condolences'.

Woops didn't do a thread search

Personally I think the information released by the Argnetinian authorities was quite a lot. I think some in the press will be looking for more on this story and I think there will be more to come.

Personally to me looked like a long drawn out nervous breakdown

TMZ published photographs of his dead body. 'Only' his arm and part of his torso was their defense, but that will certainly be one of the things she was referring to. That and the story breaking internationally so quickly, quite possibly before a lot of family and friends had been told.

mids2019 · 20/10/2024 14:04

@CheeseWisely

I think this is the approach that the BBC have taken. What I noticed was the contrast to the tabloid press and I think unfortunately they will see mileage in this.

I don't know how you can prevent press intrusion like this or even if you should to some extent

@PinkArt

Picture of a dead body is unacceptable.

What is too often forgot is these are real people, with real family and friends who are going through hell without people making it even worse because they need to know.

So you've seen how much press there's been but you thought you'd be the only person who might've thought to start a thread? Yeah right.

Also I don't think you're qualified to make any diagnoses. Let his family grieve in peace.

The full pictures have been leaked. I came across it literally by opening a social media app. It was right there on my feed, several times.

An algorithm would pick up that I read Celeb twaddle style news, but I don't look at gory things (deliberately!) and I'd never search for something like that.

It is reprehensible. His poor family. I wouldn't want to be them for all the money in the world. TMZ should never have let a corner of those images see the light of day, they're absolute scumbags.

blacksax · 20/10/2024 14:17

Way too intrusive and dramatic, particularly from some quarters, and to be honest, perhaps the sudden unexpected death of a pop star ought not to have received quite so much coverage.

Seriously do you not have someone you can talk to about this in real life?

Speculating online about a dead person's mental health prior to their dying is so ghoulish. Stop it.

LlynTegid · 20/10/2024 14:20

His father should have been allowed to visit in peace without cameras present.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 20/10/2024 14:23

Would you want this level of intrusion if it was your son, your brother, the father of your young child? That should give you your answer.

Needmorelego · 20/10/2024 14:24

Very intrusive.
Let his family and friends grieve in private and ask Mumsnet to delete this thread because this is just adding to it.

AuntieMarys · 20/10/2024 14:25

It's horrible. My dc died 2 weeks ago and I dread to think what Liams family are going through. People are so ghoulish.

VioletCrawleyForever · 20/10/2024 14:27

Outrageously over the top and intrusive

Worst I've seen.

pinksheetss · 20/10/2024 14:28

Ridiculously intrusive.

Most heart breaking thing seeing his father be hounded by paparazzi and fans (although some tried helping) when arriving to the hotel. Experiencing the same level of intrusiveness his son did
Videos out showing his father on the balcony trying to figure out how it happened etc
Should never be allowed to see those things and the public have no right or interest to be able to.

Daily Mail throws up about five new articles an hour about him, just changing out details and adding new photos. His poor son

scratchyfannyofcocklane · 20/10/2024 14:31

He chose fame, he reaped the rewards of fame and made millions from it largely due to media coverage. Unfortunately not expecting privacy in death is one of the prices you pay.

itsgettingweird · 20/10/2024 14:35

"Has died" is all we need to know.

That is the public interest bit because he was a public figure.

Nothing else is anyone else's business and his family and any others in this situation deserve respect and dignity and privacy.

Did his family choose it? Did they choose to have cameras in their faces?

did his son choose to have photos of his Dads body online for everyone to see?

Cavalierchaos · 20/10/2024 14:39

So I read the daily mail and I haven't seen anything that I would say is too intrusive. He lived in the public eye and there are sacrifices that come with that.

I'm judging you for reading the DM let alone your last sentence. You've clearly never lost a child.
