Has the Liam Payne coverage been too intrusive or about right?

I noted a compliant from Cheryl Cole that the media coverage of Liam Payne's death has been too intrusive, salacious and graphic.

I am split on this. While I do feel for Liam's young son that some of the details may be harrowing as he grows up isn't there a public interest for reasonable accurate reporting and not glossing over a lot of the quite disturbing detail.

I was struck by the difference between BBC coverage, 'Liam fell to his death' and the Daily Mail where a huge number of articles concentrated on his behaviour, drug paraphernalia, drunkenness, possible pychosis etc.

What should the balance be in the reporting? Is maintaining dignity of the dead more important than maybe an honest but uncomfortable reporting.

I had no idea who he was or that he had died until I saw threads on MN but I wouldn’t say it was intrusive.

I pick and choose the news I read from Apple News so I would only have myself to blame if it was.

It has been far too much and all far too quickly. The picture should never have been released, the video of his dad standing on the balcony shouldn't have been taken, the phone call between the hotel staff and the emergency services should've been kept private, it has been absolutely disgusting. The conspiracy theories and the "well personally I think this happened".... it's all absolutely disgusting. And it's unavoidable. I click into TikTok and this is all over my timeline without clicking into anything. It's another example of how social media has come way too far and "journalists" need to take a step back or be held responsible for the misinformation and private information they share!

However... I am hating all of these type of "oh I had never heard of him".. grand for you. I'm sure you have an interest in plenty of famous people that I've never heard of or know little about. But the faux shock over the coverage of someone you've never heard of is ridiculous!!

This will be the last thread on his death I comment on. Stop creating more and more threads on it and let him rest in peace!

I am 50 so quite old, but I had genuinely never heard of him. I had heard of One Direction, but apart from Harry Styles no idea who the others are. None of my friends had any idea who he was either. I am really puzzled by all the coverage. His death is of course tragic.

Have you and your friends heard of Maggie Smith?

In the two days after her death Smith generated just over 3 million hits on her Wikipedia bio, Liam Payne generated just over 7 million.

One Direction are the biggest boyband of the last two decades. It's natural the death of a member of an act of that size will generate a lot of coverage especially given the tragic circumstances.

That's because you don't know who he is. If you did you would understand it. He was a major part of many people's growing up. Their first teenage crush perhaps.

I am a massive fan, and I'm surprised.
No one other than the fans took any notice of him until now, Harry has gained new fans in the last few years, but the other four not so much.
It's nice to see people care, albeit too late, but it's baffling to a lot of us Directioners too.
Even the threads on here, this is only the second one I've posted on, but then I went straight to specific places online where we talk about them anyway.

A little boy has lost his Father and ghouls have apparently posted pictures off his Father's corpse online so how is that poor child going to feel in a couple of years if he comes across pictures of his deceased Fathers corpse. . Grotesque sick in the head online vultures need medical help Shame on them

I wonder to what extent we would see this coverage of the death had occurred in the UK. It seems that A lot of information has been released very quickly and maybe this is partly due to local process and partly down to the internet?

I suppose there will be a coroners inquest where witnesses may be summoned etc. which is going to add yet more spotlight to this death.

I can’t see it would be any different if the place he died changed. The headlines are because of his age, his fame, his addictions, how he died and his career. One Direction still has a large number of fans around the world.

You will get ghouls taking photos and selling them or stories to the media anywhere. The internet and social media means a story can be around the world in seconds.

People seem to fail to understand that famous people are still people. Just because someone wants to pursue a career in music or film or any other industry that brings them into the public eye, that doesn’t entitle the public to know the minutiae of their mental health struggles, addiction issues, the exact cause of their death or even the ins and outs of their personal relationships.

it certainly doesn’t entitle us to see images of their dead body.

Liam was a human being with people who loved him. People who didn’t ever ask to be thrust into the spotlight.

My mum died by suicide. I was so shocked by the number of people I barely knew who messaged me in the literal hours after her death trying to get the details. Before we had even thought about planning the funeral. It’s like people have no sense of decency and decorum.

unmemorableusername · 20/10/2024 22:39

It's got people talking about mental health, drug addiction, exploitation of young people and the nasty side of the music industry.

Hopefully some good will come from this tragedy and prevent the same fate for the next generation of young singers.

The presence of the two underpaid sex workers maybe have coloured a few peoples view. It just seemed entitled to not only hire one girl but ask for a friend he saw in the background of her sm profile. There must seems a darker side to his personality that has been glossed over but obviously we don't speak I'll of the dead as a rule.

It makes you wonder whether Liams girlfriend was there for the celeb recognition and whether there relationship was truly a loving one of one of covenience.

I personally have no interest in wondering these type of things. At the end of the day, they did have a relationship and she is grieving the loss of her partner.
