I’m going to New York next week with my husband and two teenagers.
Apart from needing a lot of money any tips or recommendations for when we’re there?

Comfy shoes - a few pairs of them
Get up early first day due to jet lag and do something.
There is loads of free stuff to do
Dumbo is good
Walk everywhere!

We went up Rockefeller.

Take a walk along the High Line https://www.thehighline.org

It’s a disused elevated train track turned into a walkway through the city with gardens and art. I was sceptical but it turned out to be one of the best things I did. I would wrap up warm if it’s chilly there at the moment as there isn’t much in the way of cover.

Dumbo?

It's the area Down Under the Manhatten Bridge Overpass.

Lucky you OP, I was in NYC this May and last and loved it!

Everythingaches · 18/10/2024 21:45

We hired bikes round Central Park, loads of fun.

If you’re into art MOMA and the Guggenheim are brilliant.

Theres a fun cable car that’s part of the subway, I think it’s called the Roosevelt tramway or something like that and it’s the same cost as a normal subway ticket.

Staten Island ferry is free and you can see the Statue of Liberty.

You can get cheaper Broadway show tickets on the day from the box office, we saw King Kong it was fab!

Katz deli is worth a trip out on the subway :)

Everythingaches · 18/10/2024 21:50

We have Hamilton tickets, Romeo and Juliet tickets plus ice hockey and basketball.

I have had no involvement in planning, just turning up!!

will be my daughters 17th birthday when we’re out there.

Go to Brooklyn, use the subway its not that scary, your subway ticket will get you on the Statten Island Ferry and Roosevelt Tram (cable car). Natural History Museum is pay what you can so you can get in for $1 each as long as you go to a desk rather than use the ticket machines.

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 18/10/2024 21:53

No tips op, l haven't been for years but have a fab time!!

Everythingaches · 18/10/2024 21:55

Thank you! Not nervous to use the subway, bit unsure about using mobile? Are there hidden charges?

I’m going to New York next week with my husband and two teenagers.
Apart from needing a lot of money any tips or recommendations for when we’re there?

  1. Best thing we did was buy a week's ticket for the sight seeing tour bus, you can just hop on and off as much as you like for the whole week.
2.rockafella centre viewing platform. 3.Empire state building 4.statue of liberty
  1. Visit the Italian district for amazing food.
  2. Central park. Horse and cart rides and plenty of chilled walking, John Lennon memorial mosaic. Plus familiar Home Alone scenes you notice as you walk round.
  1. When you leave the airport and need to get to a hotel you may get pounced by private taxi/shuttle drivers that look dodgy. Do not be put off, they get you where you want to be much cheaper than a yellow cab and know all the back streets at busy times
  1. FAO Schwarz toy store is worth a visit.

There is so much to do and if you get stuck you'll often get help from a New Yorker as they are encouraged to help tourists as a way of boosting tourism.

The high line. Great family walk.
Hudsons Yard. Watch the sunset.
South Street Sea Port. Great for lunch.
The Met, MOMA.
The Lincoln Centre.
Jazz in Central Park on a Sunday.
Brooklyn- Coney Island.

The ice hockey is great fun, we saw New York rangers when we went and the atmosphere was amazing.

clareth · 18/10/2024 22:04

Go up Edge! It’s the highest viewing platform in New York, with a section that is perspex!
MOMA is great. And walk the Highline too. Lucky you, NYC is fab, we had an amazing time, you’ll all love it!

And Jacks Wife Freda to eat! Very trendy

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 18/10/2024 22:05

Go to Ellen's Stardust Diner where the waiting staff sing songs - they're all very talented. It's by a cool thing for teenagers to do.

You have to queue to get in but hopefully only for ten or fifteen minutes.

clareth · 18/10/2024 22:07

Yes to Ellen’s Stardust Diner! Loved it!

SeaBaseAlpha · 18/10/2024 22:09

Restaurant recommendations, both near Times Square:

Juniors (original in Brooklyn but there’s one near Times Square): best cheesecake in town.

John’s pizzeria Times Square (amazing building):
