New office space - unisex toilets

I am charged with finding new space for the small organisation I work for. We need to stay in the trendy part of London we currently work in/for (our building is being demolished) and cost will be a big factor in the search. I've seen some truly awful places and only really one that meets requirements.

It's a social conscience type organisation, lovely building which seems well run, all the facilities we need and more....but all the toilets are unisex. Proper individual cubicles with floor to ceiling partitions and sinks in the cubicles, but seeing men and women going into the same "room" (ie there's still a toilet block off the corridor from which you access all the cubicles iyswim) made me feel uncomfortable.

Something you'd get used to?

You must surely realise that 'not many men are voyeurs, so it's fine if a few are' is absurd @StarSlinger ?

KingOfPeace · 18/10/2024 23:16

My office has male, female and fully contained unisex.

The only people who use the unisex are men when they want a poo. They don't have great ventilation so they smell. They're also on a busy corridor so apparently it's hard to go when you've got a few people having a chat or impromptu meeting right outside the door.

I think there's a fair chance your colleagues might hate them. Can you consult?

PolaroidPrincess · 18/10/2024 23:17

Are the mens loos not cleaned twice a day then. Of course they are but I don't go into them because I'm not a man. Not sure what your point is?

arethereanyleftatall · 18/10/2024 23:18

Dds had mixed sex toilets recently built at their secondary. They still have single sex ones too. Dds have told me that absolutely no one uses the mixed sex ones. Neither boys nor girls like them.

My point is. Does womens shit not smell?

NPET · 18/10/2024 23:28

I can't imagine I'd "get used" to it. Afaic I need my "woman's space", not just because I wouldn't want to use the same facilities as a man (& wouldn't want to think that I was sitting peeing within a ½ a metre of a peπis!), but more importantly really I want to be able to get away from boys & men, perhaps because I just WANT to, but perhaps because I need to escape from a creep.

We have this set up. It doesn't bother me in principle but there women are outnumbered by men on an almost 10 to 1 ratio in my office. I don't want to touch the toilet seat to put it down, I don't want drops of piss on the seat when they don't put it up. There is more often than not piss on the floor.

The toilet seats should be automatic.

Nah. There should be a policy on sit-down use and all surfaces- floor and toilets - protected by splashback paint.

It is excellent for blokes who want to install cameras to film women so that's going to take the stress off them.

This website is absolutely unhinged 😅

DeliciousApples · 18/10/2024 23:41

Is there just the one toilet block? If you took say the whole floor and there was a toilet block at each side you could make one make and one female?

Make urine stinks.

TimoteiChaletpants · 18/10/2024 23:44

Every unisex loo I have been in has been grim. They stink, piss on floor and seats.

MagpiePi · 18/10/2024 23:46

PolaroidPrincess · 18/10/2024 22:47

Sounds a bit like victim blaming. So if the door doesn't lock properly it's the woman's fault if she gets a man barging in? What if the lock is faulty like one of the cubicles in our single sex block at work?

The women’s toilets at my work were closed for cleaning and we all had to use the disabled toilet which had an automatic door where you pressed a button to
open or close it. It was not clear whether the door was locked when you were inside. I was using the toilet when a woman outside pressed the button to open the door as I hadn’t locked it. It opened with agonising slowness to reveal me, trying to wipe myself and pull my trousers up. We were both beyond mortified.

Chicooo · 18/10/2024 23:51

We have unisex toilets. 4 of them for around 20-30 staff members.

More women than men.

Each is its own unit with sink etc- like a normal downstairs loo in most homes.

Cant say I've actually ever really questioned it. Everyone is pretty respectful.

Sometimes I walk into one, it smells, so I choose another. But that's just a case of bad timing etc.

No issues.

BobbyBiscuits · 18/10/2024 23:53

If they are individual rooms, like a disabled toilet, with sink inside and floor to ceiling sturdy walls, that sounds fairly reasonable.
I mean, it's your workplace. You said a small organisation. It's not like there's a danger of strangers coming in and using the loos. There's no urinals or anything so everyone would have full privacy.
But having said that, you could do an anonymous poll amongst the staff if they'd prefer to designated one block as male, the other female?
If it's not down to your firm how they are organised I guess again you should see how people feel?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/10/2024 23:55

arethereanyleftatall · 18/10/2024 23:14

Why are some people pretending mens loos are cleaner than women's?

That's just laughably untrue.

Because it was true. You didn't get used sanitary towels or tampons thrown against the walls repeatedly and then rubbed over the sink and taps, for a start. And no turds on the male staff shower room floor and on the cistern lids every evening, either.

The women on the floors I did were on somewhere around the £94k a year salary mark.

With the men's, the worst you had were the odd splash or a bit of pebbledashing in the pan.

UnimessToilets · 18/10/2024 23:55

We have one unisex toilet.

As a team we are responsible for its cleanliness.

I am the only woman. And without fail, when I start my duty, I have to clean it and mop the floor before it is fit for me to use. Sink included. Usually full of hair from shaving.

We used to have a sanitary bin. The men filled it with paper towels, a newspaper, other bits and bobs because it was easier to do that then walk 5 ft to the actual bin.

I don’t care for unisex toilets.

AdviceNeeded2024 · 19/10/2024 00:03

I’ve worked in an office with unisex toilets all self contained wall to ceiling, sink and mirror in cubicle. It was fine other than being toilet roulette at finding cubicles that didn’t have the seat left up with dribbles of piss everywhere. Although other toilets were gross and I’m sure that was also down to women!!

If it’s all contained I don’t see an issue, it’s likely cost saving purposes.

Every work unisex toilet I've been in has stank of ingrained wee. I think it's impossible to keep them clean and would be do annoyed if I didn't have any choice at work.

garlictwist · 19/10/2024 02:58

This is our set up at work because I work for a disability organisation so all the toilets are fully accessible. It's absolutely fine. You don't see anyone in the actual loo. Yes, women use the same toilets as men do but you still have total privacy

Imperfectionist · 19/10/2024 07:10

DD’s large secondary school installed unisex toilets - in addition to single sex ones - and she says they are a well known no-go area especially for girls. She says the school unisex toilets are only used by kids for vaping, and they stink. 🤷🏻‍♀️

arethereanyleftatall · 19/10/2024 07:11

Missed all the news reports lately @Ramblomatic about how often this goes on? Maybe do some research.

I'd much prefer it. Love having the sink in the room, generally means there is more space for anyone with mobility issues than some of the tiny cubicles. Much easier for changing sanitary protection or changing clothes or anything you might want to do. Can wash your face without standing beside another woman.
The privacy aspect wins hands down for me!
Obviously I'd prefer to have one designated JUST for my private use but if I must share then I don't care who with provided they aren't in there with me.....

Yes, the women pointing out how men will exploit any and all opportunities are the unhinged ones.

PolaroidPrincess · 19/10/2024 09:02

This website is absolutely unhinged

So Men planing cameras in toilets to film women never happens? Are we really unhinged to point out that it does?

TumbledTussocks · 19/10/2024 09:08

I worked in several similar sounding offices. All stunning period properties in trendy London renting out rooms or floors to different companies. They all just had a couple of unisex loos on several floors and they were fine. All the companies were either entirely or majority women though. I think our company had the most men and we had 2.
