I'll tell you my thought process for DESERT which was a couple of days ago
first two words history and science I often start with these as lots of things fall into one or other but in this case they were both red
next I tried was world which was orange, then water which was green ( it later appears that lack of water is the clue) and animal also green
having got water and animal right I then thought fish and ocean, fish red ocean orange, but sea and river were orange so stopped persuing the water and related words
tried food and farm both green so then went cattle and horses both orange,
still not really understanding word after about 15 guesses
changed tack tried trade which was orange as was forest, as both ocean and forest were orange I thought it might be a land related word so tried land and earth which were green tried nature also green but culture was orange
got plant which was green and environment orange by now pretty sure it is a nature habitat type of word,so go for species ( as animal earlier was green) but it was wrong then live which put living in green then tried ecosystem which was green, so having already tried ocean, forest and farm i went for desert which was right at 38 guesses
if desert had been wrong would have gone mountain or arctic
looking back you can see that world was orange as related to land, water was green as part of a desert is lack of water; so as you do eachpuzzle look back and see which tactics work and what don't. if you get an orange word try something similar if orange again try something similar but not too close but if after four or five similar words are orange change tack and try another avenue to get better clues
generally i don't try little words like and, of, for, the & to unless very stuck ie 70+
little words that can help "being" which will give "is & was" in green but could also indicate a divine being,so if being is orange I might try God or religion next
"known" will go orange if alternatives such as known as or knowledge based
"about" can help sometimes
