Would you bother going abroad for a few days?

I have the chance to go to Gran Canaria for a few times but flights are shocking.
Monday -11.45 am departure -land 4.35 pm
So loose that day
Return
Friday 6am !!
So leaving resort at 3am !
It's really putting me off
It means we only get 3 full days
4 nights
First day won't be getting to hotel till 6pm

Would you even consider this ?
Flights are costing us £55 return
Hotel is a 5 star and managed to get it £800 for 2 of us all inclusive (it honestly looks amazing )
Flights are putting me off

We just did Weds-Sat in Italy, arriving at 5.30pm with a return flight at 7am. Would definitely do it again. I thought the return flight would be horrible but it was surprisingly ok.

notprincehamlet · 16/10/2024 19:34

Hell yes! There will be sun, it will be fab. And you'll be able to turn off the heating at home which will save you a fortune.

liquidsquidli · 16/10/2024 19:34

What's the hotel?

I would if it was a shorter flight defo. Canaries is such a schlep!

Although if hotel is close to home and no hidden extras such as airport parking and hotel I'd give it serious thought.

6 am flight ks a killer but you will be home at 12 pm?

Pinkruler · 16/10/2024 19:35

I would. Better a short fab holiday than one that's too long with not enough to do.

onetreefill · 16/10/2024 19:39

@liquidsquidli it's the hotel riu palace meloneras
We are only 20 min drive from airport to home so if we get a taxi should be home half 11/12

I would do it but stay up the last night and doze on the plane.

I don’t love flying but you can do a lot in 3 full days😎

onetreefill · 16/10/2024 19:45

We don't plan on leaving the hotel if we go.
We have been to GC loads so just want a nice hotel /food and chilling around the pool

If your flight back was Thursday night would you do it?

Gretagarbaled · 16/10/2024 19:48

I just did 3 nights in the sun but my flight back was 9pm and flight there 8am so we got 4 days. A super early flight home would be a no from me as i would come home knackered rather than rested.

onetreefill · 16/10/2024 19:50

@titchy probably not as I like 4 evening meals /entertainment etc

robinsnest1967 · 16/10/2024 19:52

100% yes I would. I'm currently in Cyprus for 4 nights. It's 28 degrees and in an all inclusive hotel. It's a perfect recharge!

onetreefill · 16/10/2024 19:54

My partner deffo won't pay the extra for the afternoon flight as he says why pay all that for a extra few hours sleep and a breakfast
He said we won't have time to sunbathe so just suck up the tiredness
Get to bed for 11 and get 4 hours sleep

The return flight isn't ideal but yea I would still go. On the Monday you still have ages then another 3 full days . (We are going Lanzarote in January just for 3 nights 😀)

HundredMilesAnHour · 16/10/2024 20:02

I'd definitely do it!

But then I've been known to go to Paris for lunch, and New Zealand for the weekend. 😂

LittleGreenDuck · 16/10/2024 20:45

I'd do it, though probably not to Gran Canaria as I didn't really rate it when we went.

I did once go to Korea for the weekend.

IDontHateRainbows · 16/10/2024 20:47

That sounds like an ideal itinerary for someone who wants to stay up late/ party.

If that's not you, I wouldn't go.

Absolutely.

Dh and I went to Portugal in June for 3 nights and it was fabulous. I've never been abroad (as in hot, sunbathing type holiday) for anything less than a week before that so wasn't sure how I'd feel...but absolutely loved it and we're planning the same next year.

When I fly (or Eurostar!) for a city break I tend to do 3 or 4 nights, depending on whether the flight times give me most of the last day or not. So yes, I would go "abroad" for 4 nights/3 days and your flights are very cheap! I wouldn't be keen on the very early flight back but wouldn't totally rule it out if it was the only option. I've also done 4 nights/3 days in New York, which is a much longer flight.

Personally I wouldn't be interested enough in Grand Canaria to do a short break like that, but it depends what you enjoy!

Relearningbehaviour · 16/10/2024 20:56

Just don't sleep prior to flight home. Sleep on flight. Have a nap when you arrive home

HaveYouSeenRain · 16/10/2024 19:18

Without kids yes I would do it

Same. No issues for adults but not a chance with small kids.

RobinHood19 · 16/10/2024 20:58

I would do it, but I’m used to travelling long distances for a day or two.

You say hotel is 15 mins away from airport. If flights are £55 I also assume no checked-in luggage? I would personally wake up at 4am and be in a taxi at 4:20am. Extra hour of sleep and it’ll probably be quite cheap.

(I’d actually wake up at 4:30 for 4:45 taxi and 5:00 terminal arrival, but I know I am quite relaxed about travel compared to most).

cinapolada · 16/10/2024 21:00

I would. But I went to Las Vegas for 4 nights 😂 it takes me longer to drive to my home town than it would to fly to Gran Canaria, and I try to only stay for one night when I visit. I don't find flying stressful, have a drink on the plane, it's part of the holiday.
