When you mess up at work and there is no way to make it better?

What do you do?

Just eat humble pie forever?

OP posts:
BlastedPimples · 14/10/2024 15:56

Yes today.

I did say to the failed co-funding application that if I had made a mistake why didn't they tell me? It could have been easily rectified. It was obvious on the form which fund I was referring to.

I mean, the mistake was absolutely mine but could have been resolved had I known. They didn't say a word. They didn't even tell me the application had failed.

Own up, which you have, apologise, which you have, discuss learnings, apply them and move on.

I don't think anyone wants or needs you to apologise forever for an error and if they do, or they bring it up needlessly, then they are being arseholes.

BlastedPimples · 14/10/2024 15:58

I've done all that.

It's just such a desolate finding landscape at the moment.

I worked so bloody hard on that application too.

BlastedPimples · 14/10/2024 15:59

Funding not finding.

I think I will go and find a stone to go and crawl under.

OP posts:
traybake81 · 14/10/2024 16:00

ok so they only found today

are you in the office?

BlastedPimples · 14/10/2024 16:01

No. I worked from home today.

Why?

I have apologised profusely.

My bosses have also queried why it wasn't flagged by the funding body when it was obvious which fund I was applying to. I mean, it's still my fault.

OP posts:
traybake81 · 14/10/2024 16:01

i was actually on one of your other threads op

i know you hate this job

This could be the right time / opportunity for you to really get cracking on job hunting or retraining?

BlastedPimples · 14/10/2024 16:02

I've been hunting for other jobs. Have applied to loads. I'm 53. It's not looking good.

because in your shoes i’d prefer to be in the office to know what’s going on

would you be very upset if you lost your job?

Tarantella6 · 14/10/2024 16:02

I'm not an expert on funding forms but I bet that's an easy mistake to make especially if you're doing multiple forms.

Your internal processes need to be reviewed, you shouldn't just complete the form and send it off, it needs a second set of eyes. Everyone makes mistakes, important processes need a review step.

BlastedPimples · 14/10/2024 16:02

But I like your silver lining outlook @traybake81

OP posts:
BlastedPimples · 14/10/2024 16:03

No. I wouldn't be upset apart from the sense of utter failure.

What makes it worse is that my boss write me a glowing letter of reference for me to use when applying for other (part time) jobs.

OP posts:
traybake81 · 14/10/2024 16:03

I would suggest you definitely go in to the office tomorrow

your boss has already written a glowing reference letter despite fact you haven’t handed in notice?

ah i see

so this particular job is part time? are you dependent on it?

BlastedPimples · 14/10/2024 16:05

It's part itme. I would look for another part time or full time.

OP posts:
BlastedPimples · 14/10/2024 16:05

Yes I need the money. I don't do this for fun.

OP posts:
BlastedPimples · 14/10/2024 16:06

Oh team meeting tomorrow so I am going in anyway.

OP posts:
Motnight · 14/10/2024 16:08

Op I am trying to say this as gently as I can but if your manager is writing a glowing reference for you before they have been asked for one, it is likely that they would like you to leave 😞

ok so get cracking hard with that

and re tomorrow… get in early.

and when the discussion turns to this… you make no excuses, no nothing. You admit this was a big error and you are so sorry.

BlastedPimples · 14/10/2024 16:12

Actually no. She panicked when I asked her for it. But I told her I was looking for part time to supplement my income.

They know I work very hard.

OP posts:
BlastedPimples · 14/10/2024 16:12

That's @Motnight

OP posts:
BlastedPimples · 14/10/2024 16:13

I've already apologised. And haven't even tried to make excuses. Obviously I will apologise again.

OP posts:

Own up
Apologise
Sort out a solution if you can and get the OK to sort it out with that solution

AlisonDonut · 14/10/2024 16:14

OP I used to be a funding manager.

How did you get the wrong form? Is there an appeal process? Can you speak to someone higher up about whether the funding would have been approved if it was on the correct form?
