Have you ever screamed?

Like out of fear proper screamed? Was thinking today whilst watching a film that it feels unlikely I ever would. I might shout or exclaim, but a proper scream? Does anyone outside of films?

I'm going to assume you have never been beaten by a man who's much bigger than you and angry as fuck. Believe me, screaming is instinctual in that situation, no concentration needed at all

For some people. For others, our throats close up and we can’t make much sound at all.

Oh of course, never meant to imply otherwise. I've experienced both myself. It was just the way OP said that that kind of scream couldn't happen without concerted effort

Pallisers · 14/10/2024 00:38

I screamed during the entire bi-manual massage I had after my first disastrous labour when I was bleeding out. I also jack-knifed into the air every time they did it. I apologised after each one. Or that's what I was trying to do - thought I was doing DH tells me I weakly lifted my head, whimpered, and then said sorry. Most pain I ever felt and if I felt it again, I'd scream.

StuffYouLike · 14/10/2024 00:40

I don't think so.
I screamed in pain when I had one of my kids - he was over nine pounds and I gave birth in under an hour with no pain relief at all so I think the screaming was justified. It wasn't a full on horror movie style scream though.

Mirren22 · 14/10/2024 00:45

My only experience is sleep paralysis where I am trying to scream or thinking I am screaming to wake up then wake up drenched in sweat and my screams are just muffled moans.

Best thing to do is try and move your feet. Really helps. Hips too, though I've not tried that as feet work for me. After all these years I still scream for my dad when I have that, though according to DH it's more of a whimper.

Oh, and don't open your eyes if you can help it. As soon as my eyes are open I see all sorts and it goes from 50 to 100 fear.

NameChange1412 · 14/10/2024 00:52

Yes, when my Stepmum called me at work to tell me that my Dad had had a cardiac arrest. I don’t really remember what I said to her on the phone, or making any noise after ending the call, but all my colleagues came running to my room because I was just screaming. I remember my legs giving way, but I don’t remember screaming, although I must have been as they all abandoned their own patients and came running. One of them has since said she’s never heard anyone scream like that before.

I also screamed, deliberately that time, alone in my car when I was driving home from the hospital after my Dad died three weeks later.

Gingerisgoodforyou · 14/10/2024 01:16

No, don't think I've ever properly screamed.

I tend to do do a big intake of breath when I'm really shocked, like I'm getting ready to scream, but it just doesn't come out. Most it's been is a yelp. In some dreams I'm trying to scream but no sound comes out.

So sorry to hear some of the awful experiences on here.

fridaynight1 · 14/10/2024 01:20

Yes, 3am in a hospital bed minding my own business fast asleep when an old lady with white hair and white nighty tried getting into my bed.

Turned out she wasn't a ghost as I first thought - just confused. But hell, my scream brought nurses running from all directions.

Alainlechat · 14/10/2024 01:21

Twice. Once when I was attacked by a stranger when I was young and then when I gave birth at the moment the ventouse was on and they pulled my baby out.

Melonjuice · 14/10/2024 01:21

When my ex tried to strangle me and had me up against the wall I did

RelativePitch · 14/10/2024 02:03

In Spain. 20 years old. I'd left my hotel door on the latch as my friend wanted to stay out clubbing longer. Woke up to find a man by my bed rifling through my suitcase. I screamed. It came out very strangely, but enough to send the bloke running.

ImustLearn2Cook · 14/10/2024 02:28

There have been times when I have screamed e.g. when I badly burned my hand. But one time, when my toddler suddenly ripped her hand out of mine and ran towards a very busy road, a very primal voice screamed, shouted, roared STOP! She froze immediately and I was able to take hold of her again. It was a voice that I have never heard come out of me before and a voice I can’t simply imitate or deliberately repeat. It was a voice that very clearly communicated fear and danger.

If I had merely shouted stop with my normal voice I don’t think she would have stopped running. If I had have chased after her, she (being a typical toddler) would have thought that was a fun game of chasey and would have kept running out onto the road.

I think that normal, natural, primal, survival instincts kicked in along with adrenaline. And it saved her life.

Op, maybe you haven’t yet been in a situation that would make you scream. But, don’t underestimate yourself. You are just as human as everyone else and you don’t really know what you are capable of until you are in it or faced with it.

Deebee90 · 14/10/2024 03:13

Yep I have a few times.

i sufffer with sleep paralysis so wake up screaming a fair few times

but also the last time I was in hospital I woke up to see a man at the end of my bed staring at me. Screamed the absolute place down as I had been given a sedative so wasn’t 100% sure where I was. Thank god he was a nurse coming to do my hourly obs. Never forgotten it though .

I just feel that screaming is a concerted act. Not shouting in pain or fear but actually high pitched screaming. Don’t you have to concentrate?

Yes, and I roll my eyes at the prolonged scream emitted whenever a woman in a murder mystery film/TV show finds The Body. Just seems so fake. (Especially in Midsomer Murders. They find bodies there every day of the week, surely they're used to it by now?)

On the original question, no, I don't think so. Only the spider-fright type.

IDontHateRainbows · 14/10/2024 03:38

On a big scary Rollercoaster I'll be screaming on every drop. Can't help it.

Often. I have an extremely exaggerated startle reflex. If something startles me I instinctively scream. It's short lived and not very loud, so it's not like a horror movie scream.

greenrollneck · 14/10/2024 05:21

Weirdly reading this and going through life events even rollercoasters and I think I can say no. I don't think I've ever screamed?

greenrollneck · 14/10/2024 05:21

BussiBop23 · 13/10/2024 22:27

Yes, once. When I woke up to hear someone walking up my stairs at 3am.

Didn't think I would scream in a situation like that, thought I would freeze, but now I know.

Who was it??

It’s interesting because most men, when you ask them to scream, can’t. Ditto some women. So it’s not like it’s a natural bodily reaction. That’s what makes me feel actual proper screaming is a forced thing.

If men can't do it it's not real? That's an interesting take.

They can't give birth either, which seems to be a common time for it. Maybe that's why we need it.

betterangels · 14/10/2024 05:30

Yes. He had me cornered. It was frightening. He ran eventually.

whateveryouwantmetosay · 14/10/2024 05:43

Once I saw a rat running across my dining room (I was teaching online) and I did scream. Bloody scared myself and the class half to death 😂

The one time I was in the most pain I've ever experienced (giving birth, 1/2 working epidural + forceful forceps), I couldn't^^ have screamed if I tried.

CottonCandyLand · 14/10/2024 05:51

Only on a massive rollercoaster in 2012.
I want to go somewhere far from people and see if I can do a real, blood-curdling scream

Well they won't scream when you ask them to because it's not natural to make such a sustained, loud noise. It's usually a response to fear/ shock.

It doesn't mean that if they were in a situation where screaming would be an expected reaction, they wouldn't.

Most people would scream in situations where they were seriously shocked or in sudden danger e.g. if falling out of a window, most people would scream.

Dontcallmescarface · 14/10/2024 06:23

I physically am unable to scream. I found that out witnessing an extremely harrowing incident (which I won't go into for fear of outing), which saw 2 people killed. I opened my mouth and nothing came out. Even as a child I never screamed. I do have a deep voice though, so that maybe why.
