Have you ever screamed?

Like out of fear proper screamed? Was thinking today whilst watching a film that it feels unlikely I ever would. I might shout or exclaim, but a proper scream? Does anyone outside of films?

I actually don’t think I can as I have singer’s nodules. Haven’t tried but genuinely don’t think I can. If I was in danger it would probably either come out as a bark or a bit Barry White!

Yes, all the time - involuntarily

A raccoon got run over on the tv tonight, yelped/screamed with shock

A yelp is not the same as a scream.

KohlaParasaurus · 13/10/2024 22:09

I screamed the place down completely involuntarily with every contraction when I was in labour, and I played along with the collective screaming when I took the children on water slides and rollercoasters when they were little. Otherwise I can't remember ever having had cause to scream as an adult.

Mozzarellaballs · 13/10/2024 22:09

I screamed the maximum I could ever scream when I gave birth both times with no pain relief, I could not control it, it was absolute torture pain

DelurkingAJ · 13/10/2024 22:10

Yes. Always thought I’d be cool and collected in a crisis. Then DS1 (aged 6 at the time) misstepped onto a Paris Metro train (I noticed because he suddenly wasn’t holding my hand) and fell into the gap between the train and the platform. Turns out that in a crisis I scream like a banshee. (DH, it turns out, is cool and collected in a crisis…DS1’s up stretched fingers could be seen and DH reached down and lifted him straight up, saying afterwards that even if his leg had been broken he had to come up and that he had no idea where the strength came from). Astonishingly, apart from a small scratch on one foot (and being, like me, in a state of shock) DS1 was fine. I think I aged a decade.

Edited to say…I screamed so loudly I brought the driver and both platform staff running.

CharlotteLightandDark · 13/10/2024 22:16

i also might yelp, shriek, squeal at something that shocks me but i actually tried to scream properly in the car the other day just to see if it was possible, and it wasn’t. I just couldn’t get one out.

DoYouReally · 13/10/2024 22:16

No and the only two occasions in life where I should have, I trued to screaming and nothing came out. Very frightening feeling.

artfuldodgerjack · 13/10/2024 22:17

I went to a theme park about 8 years ago and my BF forced me (well not really, but I was only going cause he wanted me to) on the rides. I screamed the whole time I was on the rides, not because I wanted to scream, I just couldn't help it. I didn't even realise I was doing it until he told me.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 13/10/2024 22:17

Never.

I'm not sure I could, my voice is pretty weak and difficult to project. But I've not experienced the kind of trauma described on here e.g. violence or a bad car accident.

I tend to go icy calm and quiet when under duress.

Coruscations · 13/10/2024 22:19

I always wonder about people who claim that people have screamed at them. I mean, it takes quite a lot of effort to scream, I don't hear it happening, so I really doubt this sort of claim. I suspect people use "scream" when they mean "shouted".

Trailblazin · 13/10/2024 22:19

During the traumatic delivery of dc1 I screamed the place down

I scream quite often I assumed this happens to others? E.g. when someone (DH or DC) walks quietly into the kitchen and I turn around and get the fright of my life I let out an involuntary scream.

Yes me too! I'd say at least weekly!

Righteouspuppy · 13/10/2024 22:20

It’s interesting because most men, when you ask them to scream, can’t. Ditto some women. So it’s not like it’s a natural bodily reaction. That’s what makes me feel actual proper screaming is a forced thing.

When I came face to face with a burglar in my hallway at 3am, I screamed but it wouldn’t come out I was so terrified.
When I went to see The Shining by myself because the guy I was seeing had cancelled on me, and someone tapped me on the shoulder during a particularly scary bit because they wanted to get past me, I definitely screamed then, to the amusement of the cinema.
When a stranger tried to push his way into my house as I went in, again at about 3am, I screamed very loudly but that was more calculated as I wanted to wake up the neighbours/ draw attention as to what was going on.
I am sure I have screamed at other times as well.

Oh my good what happened with the burglar?

He11oKitty · 13/10/2024 22:22

Yes, some friends once unexpectedly jumped out at me from a bush in the dark, wearing scary costumes (it was Halloween). I started instinctively screaming this sort of full on Hollywood scream, sort of realised halfway through that it was them but couldn’t stop - was a weird feeling and it made us all laugh a lot (once I finally did manage to stop). But no I didn’t have to think about it and it was a proper loud scream too, I was half proud of myself 😂

Incakewetrust · 13/10/2024 22:23

I have when I've had night terrors. I don't realise I'm screaming at first but then I come to and can hear myself.

MrsForgetalot · 13/10/2024 22:26

Only at the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

autienotnaughty · 13/10/2024 22:26

Yes I scream a lot-

Night terrors
If someone walks unexpectedly into a room/my space
Rollercoaster
Labour
Scary film
Car accident

PensivePencil · 13/10/2024 22:27

I scream regularly in my working day. (Between calls and when WFH), I mean a as loud as you can long scream. Sounds mental written down, but it’s a coping mechanism.

BussiBop23 · 13/10/2024 22:27

Yes, once. When I woke up to hear someone walking up my stairs at 3am.

Didn't think I would scream in a situation like that, thought I would freeze, but now I know.

Aproductofmyera80s · 13/10/2024 22:27

Nope, I don’t even remember a time where I’ve even screamed a little. I’m not really afraid of much, I swear if wasps come near me as I friggin hate them. Other than that I’m more of a swearer. Even when I was in labour I didn’t scream, all swearing. I’ll jump a bit if something startles me, but again usually swear with it…

I tried to scream once, and no scream came out, just a dry husky sound. {Fear}

Another time, I was with my Brother, as adults, exploring a derelict barn where we used to play as kids...and a bloody wood pigeon burst down from a beam making us both go ''AARGH!!''

Another time, a scream saved me from a horrible fate. The man let me go.

Scutterbug · 13/10/2024 22:27

I do t think I can scream. When I’ve been in threatening situations, nothing comes out. I can even scream in a dream!

Circumferences · 13/10/2024 22:28

Yes I have!
It was due to a mouse suddenly running up my leg while I was driving.
It was not "forced". I did it totally without thinking and everyone else in the car was horrified by my scream.
I wouldn't have put others into fear on purpose.
Thankfully I pulled over calmly and we sorted out the mouse.

Enoughwiththisshit · 13/10/2024 22:28

I remember blowing my top and just screaming in anger as a child and teenager. As an adult, I don't think so no. I've shouted and yelped in fear or pain and wailed loudly in unbearable anguish, but not actually screamed.
