Do you still have a landline phone in your house?

Just renewing my broadband contract and my provider asked if I wanted to keep my landline number. I've not had a landline phone for at least 15, maybe 20 years.

So I'm conducting a highly scientific study by asking the Mumsnet universe-
Do you still have an actual physical landline phone which you still use?

Yes, we use ours all the time I only use my mobile for calls if I am out.

lmhj · 13/10/2024 21:19

Yes.

BUT it's now a nightmare. @Nourishinghandcream mentions it.

So since lockdown and resilient communities I've been shopping, medication runs and checking on lots of elderly people up our valley..

They changed us all to fibre, oh so lovely. Yet still NO phone signal in a mobile and now no old line.

So in the case of a power cut, we can't plug in old phones and call them all. I have to drive round and say power off, bird on line, are you ok.

Sadly, in the event of an emergency nature would take its course because unless I had a sixth sense that's it.

Iloveeverycat · 13/10/2024 21:19

My kids would also phone the landline if they know we are in.

Yes the same here and how else am I going to find my mislaid phone? 😉

I press a button on my watch and my mobile rings 😅 technology is wonderful

AffIt · 13/10/2024 21:23

Yes - we live rurally and mobile reception is a bit touch and go.

If I can't use WhatsApp or similar to call somebody (because we have fibre broadband and that's spectacular!) and its important, I use the landline.

JumpstartMondays · 13/10/2024 21:25

Yes we have a landline connection. No we don't have a phone plugged into it.

We couldn't even if we wanted to; new builds don't have phone jacks in them anymore.

You don't need a phone jack. Landlines here are plugged into a modem.

mitogoshigg · 13/10/2024 21:25

No, i have a number allocated but no handset

LightSpeeds · 13/10/2024 21:26

Yes, just because I've had one for decades. I don't really use it ever.

Beezknees · 13/10/2024 21:26

No, I don't want to pay for it as it would never be used.

We use wifi calling on our mobile phones. There’s no need for a mobile signal. The landline is there but only really for incoming calls.

lmhj · 13/10/2024 21:34

@User1836484645R but that is the issue here.

No signal.

Power cut.

So no Wi-Fi.

Used to have landline. Fibre has removed that option

Poffy · 13/10/2024 21:44

Yes because we live in a mobile blackspot. I now have WiFi calling but actually still use the landline sometimes. I find it useful when phoning someone and needing to look at an app at the same time.

We have backup power. As long as the power to the exchange doesn’t go down, and I suppose that is possible, we will be OK.

BotterMon · 13/10/2024 21:47

Have appalling mobile reception so use t'internet calling on mobiles BUT keep landline just in case t'internet goes down!

OnlyHereForTheChristmasBoard · 13/10/2024 21:49

Yes. To me a mobile is something for quick calls and messages if I am away from home. The landline is for proper conversations and important stuff.

DramaAlpaca · 13/10/2024 21:52

I keep the landline because I've elderly parents abroad and they prefer it.

It's also useful because where we live our mobile reception can be patchy. I sometimes have to run about outside waving my phone in the air to get a text to send.

TriangleSquareFringe · 13/10/2024 22:04

Nope, not for past 15 or so years.

Borborygmus · 13/10/2024 22:05

Yes, though we only really use it because BT give us free calls.

sunsettosunrise · 13/10/2024 22:10

I am 25, and have not used a landline since I was at secondary.

LaurieFairyCake · 13/10/2024 22:11

No, not for 13 years

SatinHeart · 13/10/2024 22:21

No. Until recently we had a BT digital landline (which didn't work when the broadband went down). We recently switched to plus net and now have no landline at all. It has made things difficult though with PILs as they don't like phoning mobiles.

motherhoodmcrollercoaster · 14/10/2024 06:35

Yes

Bewareofthisonetoo · 14/10/2024 06:38

Haven’t had one for years.
And before that was unused for years

BoobyDazzler · 14/10/2024 06:41

Haven’t had one for about 15 years
