Do you still have a landline phone in your house?

Just renewing my broadband contract and my provider asked if I wanted to keep my landline number. I've not had a landline phone for at least 15, maybe 20 years.

So I'm conducting a highly scientific study by asking the Mumsnet universe-
Do you still have an actual physical landline phone which you still use?

Yes. Mobile signal is shocking in the village I live in, so I have to use the landline unless I stand outside to make every phonecall.

jollygreenpea · 13/10/2024 20:40

Yes even though we have decent mobile reception we only ever use the landline.

redtrain123 · 13/10/2024 20:41

About to get rid of it. Kinda feel sad, end of an era.

We only use it to phone our elderly parents on though.

Same.

user2848502016 · 13/10/2024 20:42

We do but never use it and nobody calls us on it so pretty pointless really! Not sure why it's still there

username3678 · 13/10/2024 20:42

I have a landline and a phone but the phone is in its box.

Doggymummar · 13/10/2024 20:42

No

FortunataTagnips · 13/10/2024 20:45

We have the line, as we need it for our broadband, but haven’t had a phone plugged in for years.

Ginkypig · 13/10/2024 20:45

Yes but only have it until my older family no longer have it which should be soon as they are trying to make it work through the router and said family members are horrified.
once they sto having one I’ll ditch it too.

i don’t feel I can hear conversation as well with the mobile though so I’m not quite sure how great phone calls will be.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 13/10/2024 20:47

Yes I much prefer the sound quality. However my broadband/calls provider Increased their charges this year for even off-peak to about £8 per month. That was a too large increase when I am already paying for mobile calls. So I cancelled our talk package. Happily receive calls to the landline, but have to make calls out from the mobile. It really is not such a good service. I also live rurally - a very large populated area but still counted as rural - and mobile signals are very variable.

Idontlikeyou · 13/10/2024 20:48

There is a line to the house but we have never had one here. We don’t have a landline number.

RosesAndHellebores · 13/10/2024 20:49

Yes my elderly mother uses it and if there were an emergency it's the number she would remember.

LadyLolaRuben · 13/10/2024 20:51

Mums1234 · 13/10/2024 20:24

Yes as the reception is poor where I live.

Same here. Use landline every day

ByMerryKoala · 13/10/2024 20:51

Yes, we have a landline. I only use it to ring my mobile when I lose it around the house 🫣 Pretty sure it just comes with the broadband anyway.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 13/10/2024 20:53

Yes. Another with terrible mobile signal usually has a cordless phone plugged in to it but we have an old phone with coily wire tray doesn't require electricity that we plug in during power cuts.

grafittiartist · 13/10/2024 20:55

Yep. I use it regularly.
Son (20) calls it before trying a mobile number. Must be better sound.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 13/10/2024 20:56

No, haven't had one for about 15 years.

RedRosie · 13/10/2024 20:58

We do. The call quality is better (especially in some kinds of weather), elderly parents (who do have mobiles) prefer it as it's not so fiddly to use, and it doesn't cost anything to have with the provider we are using. We probably use it three or four times a week.

Abracadabra12345 · 13/10/2024 20:26

Yes the same here and how else am I going to find my mislaid phone? 😉

I make Alexa call me 100 times a day to find my mobile 😅

User1836484645R · 13/10/2024 21:01

Yes. It doesn’t cost anything extra to have and it’s a useful number to give when filling in online forms. The spam goes to the landline and the spam filter stops it getting through to us.

Tezza1 · 13/10/2024 21:04

On paper I do, but haven't had one plugged in for yonks. I think I kept a handset in case the power does out, as it did for four days during a bushfire about a decade ago. I presume you can use a landline when there's no power, or am I fooling myself, and should stock up on more power banks?

DeliciousApples · 13/10/2024 21:07

Yes. Elderly parent
Although it's via my router so it's not strictly a landline is a voix or something like that.

BigDahliaFan · 13/10/2024 21:07

Nope not since we had fibre fitted 2 years ago. We could have a voip phone but it's £200 a year which is a lot to make the odd phone call thst is cheaper via a landlines rather than mobile.

usernother · 13/10/2024 21:09

No but I wish I did. If I lose it or my phone is stolen, how would I get in touch with banks etc to cancel things.

Nourishinghandcream · 13/10/2024 21:10

Yes.
We were full fibre in our old house and also in our NB.
Phone plugs into the router but unlike the old copper line is locally powered so in the event of a power failure we loose it.
Doesn't cost any extra so it made sense to have it.

Has proved very handy for ringing my OH as he often doesn't turn his mobile on (we both turn them off at night) so at least I can get hold of him on the house phone.
