When do you stop hanging washing out?

It's going to get to 10 degrees today. Is that going to dry anything? Or should it just put it on the airer?

If the patio in the back garden's dry, I'll put washing out. I sometimes peg out in the middle of winter if the air's dry. I don't have a cut-off, in other words - I decide from day to day.

Zippedydodah · 13/10/2024 08:22

Me too @PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich .

Barleycat · 13/10/2024 08:22

When it rains

MouseofCommons · 13/10/2024 08:22

Never. If there's a breeze and the path is fairly dry it goes out.
Cold sunny winter days are some of the best drying days.

TokyoSushi · 13/10/2024 08:22

I'm the opposite, probably finished now until the spring!

5475878237NC · 13/10/2024 08:23

I do it all year as long as the grass isn't dewy.

GretchenWienersHair · 13/10/2024 08:23

It depends how sunny it is. My theory is cold + sunny = hang it out. Cold + grey = don’t don’t bother.

RosieFlamingo · 13/10/2024 08:23

If its raining or if it has rained and the patio isn't drying I don't bother. Any other time it gets hung outside.

Crazyeight · 13/10/2024 08:24

I never find it dries beyond October. It goes out wet and comes out the same or wetter in my experience.

A good way to tell is if the grass dries out during the day. If you're still walking on dew at 2pm then washing isn't going to dry.

Attictroll · 13/10/2024 08:24

Hoping to put some out today as cold and sunny. Mid winter probably still put towels out if dry and sunny.

I was wondering the same OP, but I will peg it out, give it a go, and will report back! I am considering a heated airer this year

RhinestoneCowgirl · 13/10/2024 08:25

Pretty much what @PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich said. I have a small house, and want to avoid wet washing draped about inside as much as poss

PurBal · 13/10/2024 08:26

Like PP the laundry goes outside if it's dry.

How do you avoid your towels going crispy if they are dried on the line?

Wiserandolder · 13/10/2024 08:28

I won't bother now unless it's a breezy day.. my heated airer is the best! Game changer..

mitogoshigg · 13/10/2024 08:29

From about now, mine is trying in the warm living room on racks and towels in tumble dryer as I type.

LemonTurdCart · 13/10/2024 08:30

Everything goes on indoor airers now but I’ll hoof them out the back door whenever possible.
Can retrieve in seconds if it rains or if popping out and don’t want to chance it.
Somehow the clothes smell fresher just for an hour outside.

minisomum · 13/10/2024 08:30

We don't bother between October and April as we have a sheltered, north facing garden and it's pointless as nothing ever dries enough to make it worth it.

Same here. It is weather dependent, not temperature dependent.

DiscoBeat · 13/10/2024 08:31

Around this time of the year. Everything is going straight from washing machine to tumble dryer now, sadly.

DoublePeonies · 13/10/2024 08:31

Washing goes out all year round, if it's dry. Yes, it then needs finishing on the airers, but it dries much quicker after a blast outside.

ExquisiteIyDecorated · 13/10/2024 08:34

It is weather dependent, I'm glad I didn't put any out yesterday though as it was a glorious sunny breezy morning then torrential rain at lunchtime. Finish it off in the dryer if necessary, we don't have space for airers inside. I like crunchy towels.

Taciturn · 13/10/2024 08:36

Unless it's pouring or rain set in for the day, we always hang out. Even in mid-winter when there is a lot of atmospheric moisture, it dries quicker to hang outside and then bring inside damp due to localised humidity being lower in the fresh air.

I tend to finish towels off in the tumble drier for 10 mins which softens them

Gelasring · 13/10/2024 08:38

I used to stop bothering around this time/November but last year I hung it out year round and was surprised how much it cut down on the time it needed in the tumble dryer. Yes, it was usually damp coming in but it had dried a fair bit and halved the time it needed in the drier. I feel like that's worth it personally.
