When do you stop hanging washing out?

It's going to get to 10 degrees today. Is that going to dry anything? Or should it just put it on the airer?

rumred · 13/10/2024 13:30

It's due to be 16° middle of next week so I'm planning to do most of my washing to coincide with the better weather. Generally though sunny days until winter.

QuintessentialDragon · 13/10/2024 13:47

I never start. Tumble-dryer all the way, all year round. Can't be arsed hanging it out.

wakeboarder · 13/10/2024 13:48

Mine goes out all year. Don't own a tumble dryer, dries fine outside just occasionally needs to be finished indoors on an airer. Obviously important to look at the weather forecast thou 😂

outforawalkbiatch · 13/10/2024 14:00

Never goes out. Wish I could but it's not allowed Sad so in summer I dry near open windows, winter I use a heated airer and dehumidifier

Are you in the US?

liquidsquidli · 13/10/2024 14:03

I'be done but is a PITA.

Put load one out delicate then when the tights and light stuff dried or nearly dried out that in an airer and out the second load out - I only have a one line.

Suppose it is better but I feel like I am doing it all twice

Whenever anything goes in the tumble drier bar pants and towels is shrink it

Where are you? Not in the UK I assume.

outforawalkbiatch · 13/10/2024 14:06

@MouseofCommons U.K.
it's an apartment but I'm the only one with a garden. The lease says no hanging washing out so people don't drape it over balconies etc but they won't give me leeway as I have a garden

MumChp · 13/10/2024 14:08

If it's dry it goes out.

MoneyMilk · 13/10/2024 14:12

Do you put your clothes through the spin cycle once or twice?
Probably the best way to remove half the moisture that many people seem to be unaware of.

I can remember my Mum bringing in washing that had frozen stiff as a board. It's never happened to me but I don't know why - climate change?

Me too! 1950’s baby here, Monday twin tub wash whatever the weather and hung out unless pouring with rain. I remember laughing at my dad’s work shirts standing up on their own. However my mum didn’t work, and was incredibly stressed and shouty on Mondaysand I can still remember how horrid it was to be “ under her feet” so definitely not “ the good old days”
When I had 3 at home I hung it out all year round if it was dry but did get a tumble dryer when the amount of spurts kit got too much.
Now, with retirement and just the 2 of us, I hang it out all year round if it’s dry because I can bring it in if it starts to pour down. We are south facing and if I hang out early and take it in early afternoon it’s dry enough for the airing cupboard.
Certainly didn’t do that all year round when I was working

Yes "extra spin for the win" on all but delicates and this has made a massive difference to drying

Also bought a dehumidifier

The wind dries it more than the sun in winter. Depends on the weather on the day. I'd say there are about 3 months I don't hang washing out.

BanksysSprayCan · 13/10/2024 14:39

Yes, always buy a washing machine with the highest spin speed you can afford.

Bignanna · 13/10/2024 14:42

Surprised tumble dryers are still being used, considering how they gobble electricity!

ExquisiteIyDecorated · 13/10/2024 14:44

Not much alternative for many @Bignanna and the modern heat pump ones are vastly more efficient than older ones. We calculated the running costs per load of our vs heated airer and it came out about the same and it's a lot easier to use.

AutumnMagpies · 13/10/2024 14:52

I used to always stop from September to late March. I’m going to try hanging it outside on windy dry days this winter.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/10/2024 16:52

I hung mine out today and it was almost dry. I'll iron it then hang it up to dry completely.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 13/10/2024 17:02

I put the sheets out, brought them in around 2.30pm and they were half dry. Now just finishing them off indoors. Hopefully they'll be dry in the morning.

wakeboarder · 13/10/2024 18:12

I've done 2 lots today, both dried fine despite the clouds and low wind speed. It's only been 10 degrees here too

HowYouSpellingThat10 · 13/10/2024 18:44

Two loads dried here today as well.

I have a couple of the airers with five bars each over the bannister. I don't like drying fully wet things on them to avoid the humidity but they are fantastic for finishing off. I don't have a utility room and don't want an airer cluttering our limited space.

I can put the majority away (or at worst put it on the hanger but leave on the wardrobe door).

The heavy things like joggers just need the waist band to dry..

NinaOakley · 13/10/2024 18:46

“If the ground is dry it’s worth a try!”

AgileGreenSeal · 13/10/2024 18:48

Wind dries clothes, not heat.
As long as it’s not raining a windy day is a drying day.
I’ve even had clothes dry on a line in Donegal on a showery day because the wind was so fierce 🤣

Yes, we judge whether the wind is stronger than the rain before bringing it in off the line!

I always give an extra ten minute spin cycle at 1400 on top of any wash.
