Where to buy non wormy fish?

I’ve recently noticed that nearly all salmon & cod I bought has worms in them. It’s ok to eat it once cooked I assume but really puts me off. I tried Tesco, Morrisons & Waitrose. Where do you get your fish from and does it have worms?

I don't eat cod but I've never seen worms in salmon.

ClearFruit · 10/10/2024 13:37

What the fuck?

Mum2jenny · 10/10/2024 13:39

Never seen any worms in raw fish in the UK

I find it strange that it would happen every time that you buy these things. In all my years buying fresh fish, this has only happened to me twice.

I’ve just had some salmon for lunch & pulled out what at first looked like long white fibre… upon closer inspection. Yup. 🪱. I’m wondering if it’s better to buy wild salmon… not as tasty though (in my opinion)

Are you sure what you are seeing is worms, and isn’t just the sinews of the fish?

I’ve never seen worms in fish bought in the UK ever.

SirChenjins · 10/10/2024 13:40

Eh?! I buy mine from Aldi, Sainsburys, the fish van or the chippy - I've never seen a worm in fish in my 55 years of eating the things.

SirChenjins · 10/10/2024 13:40

Those aren't worms OP!

Well, it’s not every time. It’s until I find something and then move onto the next supermarket 🫣

Another who has never seen a worm, and we eat a fair bit of fish!

Sonicbrooms · 10/10/2024 13:42

anyone else wishing they hadn’t read this and also confused, a bit disgusted yet intrigued at the same time?

it’s an emotional rollercoaster 😂

Grepes · 10/10/2024 13:43

Farmed salmon is awful. The conditions are horrendous, they pump them full of chemicals, feed them wild salmon (that we could eat!), and contributes to the decline of our wild salmon population. A lot of prominent restaurants refuse to use it now. I’m not surprised you are finding the quality awful.

twomanyfrogsinabox · 10/10/2024 13:45

My DM found worms in Cod many years ago (about 1970s), she was horrified and took it back to the fishmonger. I've never seen any in any fish, I think it is possible in Cod, not sure about salmon.

Another who has never seen worms in fish. Are we talking whole fish or already prepared fillets?

LadyKenya · 10/10/2024 13:47

I got an excellent piece of cod last week, from my local Eat 17 fresh fish counter. It was much better than the line caught cod that I normally buy pre-packaged from M&S.

JanglingJack · 10/10/2024 13:47

In my 48 years, I have only ever seen a cod worm. That was on a fillet direct from the fishmonger.

That was 25 years ago.

You must be very unlucky OP. Or you don't know what a worm is. It usually sits on top and will give a little wiggle at you. I doesn't usually present itself when it's dead.

Worms are at max 1cm, so I don't know what you're pulling out or from where.

Are you sure it's not just the albumin you're seeing?

Supermarkets don't fish from different oceans or farms.

Just so you know.

Definitely not I’m afraid. I’m glad to hear that my experience is somewhat unique! Or maybe I’m just looking too closely or indeed very unlucky. Looking at Able & Cole now £21 for 4 fillets is crazy ..

She's just over cooking her fish!

I hope she doesn't get cheap, watery bacon... Snakes!

Surely the question should be is...

Why aren't fish dewormed like cats are? Cats eat fish... Oh God it's spiralling.

@Veryoldandtired Google how many worms are in your ketchup.

Paisleydad · 10/10/2024 14:02

Worms in fish are common. They are parasitic and although they are called Cod Worms they are also common in haddock and salmon.

I've only encountered one once, but they are harmless and killed by cooking.

You have probably eaten worse.
