I think I know what the majority will say but do you go into work with a cold?! Please give me some tough love to get me through the next couple of work days with the lurgy!

Yes i do

PolaroidPrincess · 09/10/2024 17:31

Yes I do but we have a very draconian policy at work. Years ago I had an employer who sent anyone who had a cold home as they didn't want it to spread through the office. There was hardly any sick leave ever taken as you weren't constantly picking things up at work.

AgainandagainandagainSS · 09/10/2024 17:35

Yup. Unless covered in blood, projectile vomiting (or other end) or unconscious.

BigDahliaFan · 09/10/2024 17:38

We're encouraged to work from home with a cold. If that wasn't possible then I would if just sniffling, not if full of phlegm and snot.

WeGoSlow · 09/10/2024 17:50

Of course! A cold is a normal part of life that you expect to have approximately 3 times each winter. I'd be given a formal warning if I took that much time off work.

BlueEyedLeucy · 09/10/2024 17:55

I’d work from home, but pre-covid - before we had WFH as an option - I’d have gone in.

HundredMilesAnHour · 09/10/2024 17:55

No. I work from home if I have a cold. You would get very short shrift in my office if you go in and spread your germs about.

Chewbecca · 09/10/2024 18:00

It depends if WFH is an option or not.

thursdaymurderclub · 09/10/2024 18:01

it depends on the severity of the cold! if its just a sniffle, a bit thick headed but generally just under the weather, then yes i would go to work. if however i was feeling really rough, coughing and spluttering, snot dripping out of my nose, then no i probably would not go to work.

CheeryUser · 09/10/2024 18:02

Yes. I’d try to avoid coughing or sneezing over anyone but would still turn up unless I felt really dreadful.

SeanMean · 09/10/2024 18:02

Yes, I would.

InSpainTheRain · 09/10/2024 18:04

No I don't - it's preferred we work from home or take time off to recover properly.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 09/10/2024 18:05

Yes. If all the teachers who had colds were off, my school wouldn't be able to cover all the classes. Obviously there is no option to work from home. It's a but rubbish standing in front of classes all day, projecting your voice when you have a cold, but that's life.

ScaryGrotbag · 09/10/2024 18:06

Unless you are on deaths door and physically can't get out of bed, we are expected to work.

SophiaJ8 · 09/10/2024 18:06

Of course. If anyone rings up sick to say they have a cold, I don’t say anything, I let them fill the silence. I’m waiting for them to explain why exactly that means they are not coming in.

LlynTegid · 09/10/2024 18:07

No, as I have the option to work from home.

ShamblesRock · 09/10/2024 18:07

I think I'd still be expected in work.

Echobelly · 09/10/2024 18:08

If it's making me feel crappy I might stay at home when I was planning to go in as the commute is horrible with it, but I can always work with a cold, even a fairly bad one.

Poppy61 · 09/10/2024 18:08

No and I hate when other colleagues come into work with viruses. Some of us look after elderly and vulnerable people, as well as having to work.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 09/10/2024 18:09

Yes, I'd get sacked for non-attendance for not going in with a cold.

GrumpyPanda · 09/10/2024 18:10

I'm reasonably flexible so when I can feel a cold coming on I prefer to take a day off and nip it in the bud with an overnight sweat cure, gargling with Iran disinfectant, nasal rinses and lots of rest. I can usually avoid a full outbreak that way, so less time lost overall, not to mention my well-being..

RaininSummer · 09/10/2024 18:10

Not if very sneezy and obviously snotty as my customers won't want to sit with me for appointments let alone the spread around the office. If feel ok can probably do appointments by phone that day.

PippyPip · 09/10/2024 18:13

Depends how bad the cold is really but yes I have called in sick with the cold. Some colds are awful and won’t shift unless you rest.

MurdoMunro · 09/10/2024 18:13

In my job? I’d WFH because I can so why not. Depends what your job is - tricky to work from home if I were a roofer or dentist. My decision would further be influenced by where I sit on the roofer or dentist spectrum.

Being a bit more sympathetic, I think most of us would work but if its a right stinker and you’ve also got long commutes or a physical job you might need to take a few days.

Sewaccidentprone · 09/10/2024 18:13

Depends on how bad the ‘cold’ is.

ive some kind of crap virus atm and have a high temp. Went to bed Mon after work and am still here. Feel like utter garbage - aching muscles, awful cough etc.

had a cough a few mths ago which became a chest infection and just wfh. If that wasn’t an option I don’t know what I’d do. Everyone is different.
