TRIGGER WARNING I can’t believe some people aren’t evacuating in Florida

I really don’t mean to be insensitive. This hurricane Milton is terrifying but I’m really struggling to understand this. I know there are some awful situations where people can’t drive/are disabled or elderly and feel helpless but what I CAN’T understand is people not trying. Like they’re completely putting their head in the sand.

I’m part of a few mum Facebook groups that are mostly American. I kid you not, people are staying in zones with their little babies where there is mandatory evacuation. Some reasons why they aren’t leaving:

  • my dog is aggressive and won’t be allowed in the shelter, so I’m staying put with him and going to hope and pray. Why is the dog worth more than a kid?
  • i have too many animals which don’t fit in the car, I’m worried about the chickens (!!) again.. wtf? Basically suicide for their kids because they don’t want to leave chickens!
  • im from flORIda so I’ll be fine! Hopefully it’s not as bad as they think. I don’t want to disrupt us. wtf??
  • my babies have a block safe room and that’s ‘normally fine’

There are other Americans trying to send them money, urging them to go storm shelters or at least a bit more inland!

These are people in areas that have 15ft storm surge, there is so much debris already around that is going to be trashing their houses. If they want a certain death for themselves then fine but can’t get over them not saving their babies 😭😭😭 all because they won’t leave the bloody chickens that are going to drown either way!!

And another foolish mother with a little girl ... Little girl is a pink blur on the ground now..

Why risk a child like that??

How bloody cruel. It’s one thing to abandon your pets. It’s another to tie them to a fence and leave them. I’ve also seen photos of rescue crews rescuing dogs from where they have been shut in kennels with water coming up to their chests. Little dogs would have drowned in that

That is absolutely senseless.

They should have just released the dog to fend for itself if they didn't want to take it with them.

I’m actually wondering if there is any way of flagging to some of the authorities in the area? It feels like it’s only a matter of time
before someone’s luck runs out. people shouldn’t be in charge of children if they can’t work out this was a bloody dangerous thing to do.

That actually makes me so angry. I don't want to write what think because it would be "not in the spirit of the site".
But even if they are both OK and the girl thinks its all fun and games now. She is more likely to look back on this, possibly when she has her own child and think "my mother was a stupid selfish bitch who didn't love me" than "what a cool picture, so glad my mum risked my life like that."

oakleaffy · 09/10/2024 21:53

Do people not have common sense? Tethering animals where serious floods are expected is so brainless.

When there were the unpredictable wildfires in Australia some years back, horses were better off { according to locals} to be set free to save themselves taking off head collars.

Tethering animals to drown is awful.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 09/10/2024 21:53

For all the people that are saying they would stay behind for their dog or whatever - animals really do have great survival instincts. I'm sure we've all heard the stories of dog owners jumping in frozen lakes to save little Fluffy, after which rather predicably the human drowns, followed by the doggy climbing out unscathed. It would be the same here, the doggo would scarper for higher ground or shelter as soon as it smelled danger in the air; and you will be left in your rapidly flooding house alone. Having sacrificed your life for an animal who will be overtaken by primal survival instinct and bugger off and leave you anyway.

This is heartbreaking. Most animals will take off and fend for themselves. Why trap them like this! It is horrible... but then there are people on this tread saying you should kill your pets anyway.

Not ridiculous at all - Republican politicians cynically exploiting people who already have flat earth tendencies

You're wasting your breath.

Dottie is a MAGA madhead who won't ever have a single bad word said about her tango-toned cult leader.

It's literally senseless.

Probably the owner has no 'horse sense' {as common sense used to be called}

Or as a tutor used to say ''Common sense is not that common'' .

BlackOrangeFrog · 09/10/2024 21:58

cryinglaughing · 09/10/2024 16:38

I wouldn't leave my horse behind, so if I couldn't take her, I'd stay.
I wouldn't expect my dh and dd's to stay though, they could go with the more portable pets we have.

You'd really risk leaving your kids without their mum....for a horse?

pestowithwalnuts · 09/10/2024 18:38

Just seen a woman on the news..she has a 3yr old..but apparently ' god will provide '

Florida has a population of over 22 million. I've seen this story about the woman with the 3 year old posted on various Mumsnet threads at least a dozen times. She is not representative of the majority of Floridians.

Also, lots of people on Facebook and Tik Tok are idiots. Again, don't judge millions by the actions of a small percentage.

Personally, I'd say when you take on the responsibility of bringing a human into the world, and they trust you to be their protector, then you shouldn't be throwing in the towel on that duty for a pet.

Edited

What about if you feel that same responsibility for a pet? We are also the protectors of them. You might feel that way but please accept you don’t make decisions for others.

There is NO WAY on earth I would leave my pet.

No one wants to leave their pet. But I wouldn’t leave my baby as well as my pet if my baby had a chance to survive. What are you going to do when the storm surge comes - try and save the dog over the baby?
