TRIGGER WARNING I can’t believe some people aren’t evacuating in Florida

I really don’t mean to be insensitive. This hurricane Milton is terrifying but I’m really struggling to understand this. I know there are some awful situations where people can’t drive/are disabled or elderly and feel helpless but what I CAN’T understand is people not trying. Like they’re completely putting their head in the sand.

I’m part of a few mum Facebook groups that are mostly American. I kid you not, people are staying in zones with their little babies where there is mandatory evacuation. Some reasons why they aren’t leaving:

  • my dog is aggressive and won’t be allowed in the shelter, so I’m staying put with him and going to hope and pray. Why is the dog worth more than a kid?
  • i have too many animals which don’t fit in the car, I’m worried about the chickens (!!) again.. wtf? Basically suicide for their kids because they don’t want to leave chickens!
  • im from flORIda so I’ll be fine! Hopefully it’s not as bad as they think. I don’t want to disrupt us. wtf??
  • my babies have a block safe room and that’s ‘normally fine’

There are other Americans trying to send them money, urging them to go storm shelters or at least a bit more inland!

These are people in areas that have 15ft storm surge, there is so much debris already around that is going to be trashing their houses. If they want a certain death for themselves then fine but can’t get over them not saving their babies 😭😭😭 all because they won’t leave the bloody chickens that are going to drown either way!!

Funnily enough, I added a TW in case it upset some other people. I was actually trying to be nice. Weird!

Judging other people when you are sitting pretty and privileged in your non hurricane area is very nice.

It is all over the news
A thread here does not require a warning

Sigh. My thread was specifically about mums with young babies, which you’ll know if you read my op. I remember when I had my first baby, anything around babies being abused/in danger really upset me. People are sensitive a tad fucking crazy as so many of these responses have only confirmed. I don’t get why it harms you to try and put a warning on these posts when some women might be going through some stuff postpartum. Like why does it bother you? Really don’t get it.

Some of the sights I’ve seen of abandoned animals. Horrific.
if I couldn’t take mine, I’d stay too.

If you have animals, you will completely relate to this!
Let's not forget that for some there's a choice to leave but for many more there simply is not

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone going through it..

I could never imagine leaving animals but then I had kids. It would absolutely break me to leave a pet. But I would never let my babies suffer in their place.

I've just read of a man who lives on a houseboat who is staying as he has nowhere else to go
How terrifying

Is this the guy they've nicknamed Lieutenant Dan? He said Noah survived the flood in a boat so he will too. Read on the news a few hours ago that he survived and is fine!

I too have grown up kids and I totally understand what you're saying.
Personally, if I lived in an area prone to this, I would choose to only have pets you can scoop up and take with..

JesusOnAYamaha · 10/10/2024 18:58

@biscuitandcake LOL what a load of old toot. Not helped by the piss-poor editing.

In April, Brand revealed in April that he had been baptised as a Christian by Bear Grylls in the River Thames.

Now that requires a trigger warning.

FlappingMadly · 10/10/2024 19:12

It was actually 19 tornados. There are always those that downplay such things. And those that deny anything that hints of climate change. Some people died and I hope they don’t find more. It’s not fun recovering from the last hurricane and then hit by this plus no power or water, floods.
I can understand feeling exhausted at the thought of uprooting everything and schlepping your children somewhere. I have three beloved pets but wouldn’t risk our lives for them if they couldn’t come with.

I don't understand. What's this with "TRIGGER WARNING" ?!?

I keep seeing this. Is it just a fashionable thing to say or what?

It’s because everyone’s a snowflake nowdays, so you have to say “trigger warning” incase its upsets someone.

BooBooDoodle · 10/10/2024 20:05

Many people didn’t have the funds to evacuate. Even the airlines were cashing in on the misfortune of these poor people by increasing their fares by $200. Absolutely disgraceful, everyone should have been offered free and safe passage out of there.

browneyes77 · 10/10/2024 20:15

I have family in Florida.

Currently hoping they’re safe, as haven’t had an update

Donsyb · 10/10/2024 20:28

My ex worked in new Orleans for a while when a hurricane hit. None of the locals he knew were leaving, they’ve lived through so many of these they can get quite blase about it. They just hole up with supplies and ride it out.

changeme4this · 10/10/2024 20:45

Not everyone has a place to go to. The news a day or so ago was also saying traffic was at a standstill and was only moving on the hour.

Not everyone has a huge fuel tank to cope with that sort of wait. Personally if it was me, I would take my chance at home too.

What (approx) area? I might be able to give you an idea of what's going on in general.

The trigger warning was to do with babies.
OP said
"I put it in last minute because it’s incredibly upsetting especially to people with new babies."

Peple with new babies who may have to make the choice between their babies (who they are obviously not going to leave behind to fend for themselves) and their pets (who may well die if left in the storm).

I put it in last minute because it’s incredibly upsetting especially to people with new babies.

No, honestly. It's just silly. Please don't do it again.

HangDai · 09/10/2024 16:35

Me too.

Ditto. No way on this earth would I ever leave behind my pets.

KayBee27 · 10/10/2024 23:29

I agree 100%. Having said that, lets be honest we are in strange times where many peoples priorities are not what they used to or should be..what more can one say 🤷‍♀️

Mamanyt · 10/10/2024 23:36

My son sent his wife and small sons to safety, but he elected to stay to keep an eye on their property. His home contains quite a bit of valuable stuff, easily stolen. I can see his point, but BOY, did it put me through the wringer!

Scavengers are a major problem after hurricanes. They go in as soon as the wind dies down and steal anything not destroyed. They are no better than grave robbers, IMO.

KayBee27 · 10/10/2024 23:38

We all have a right to voice an opinion. If it differs from the masses doesnt mean its wrong!

T1Dmama · 11/10/2024 10:06

I can! There’s reports of people breaking down in cars because their car has overheated or run out of fuel.. fuel stations running out, traffic queues at a standstill…
I would deem myself safer in a well built basement or crawl space than stuck in the open in a car!

what I struggle with more is believing that people in these high risk areas build homes without either a water tight basement stocked up on water & tinned food supplies, or that there’s not local shelters built for residents that they can walk to. Seems very ill prepared of america in general.

many shelters also nan pets… I would rather hide out with my dogs than leave them alone and scared

MushMonster · 11/10/2024 13:14

Have you heard of the issues with meteorologists facing threads? Some conspiracy theories going around saying scientists and the government control the weather!
And some relation to Trump.
I have not heard or read what Trump said, but just started reading an article in the Guardian and cannot believe my eyes!

Rhaenys · 11/10/2024 14:04

If it came to it, I’d rather die at home than in my car stuck on a motorway surrounded by thousands of other terrified people.
