Do you feel excited as an adult?

Okay, so this is an extremely privileged post. I am really sorry if this is a bit of a kick in the teeth to people living in very difficult times.

I order a new car and I am feeling extremely excited about it - it meets the needs of my family and it's lovely. It won't be ready to collect for a few months

I have realised, this is the first time in my recent adult life that I've felt any excitement?

I had terrible HG with my pregnancy time so didn't feel excited at all. Just relief and desperation for it to all be over! I was pregnant on my wedding day and was lucky to get photos where I didn't look close to death

I have come to realise I genuinely cannot say when the last time was that I felt ANY excitement

I have felt content. Which is logically far more stable an emotion

I know weirdly feel annoyed at myself for being excited Hmm and keep reminding myself this will all end and it won't be exciting anymore so to just quit whilst I'm ahead

Yes I get excited by lots of different things. New pyjamas, new book, holidays, events, meeting up with a friend I've not seen in awhile, a night out with my husband, getting a new job, the kids hobbies when they have a game and are winning or when they get man of the match, pay day, new clothes, a very, very rare weekend day when I have nothing planned and can chill out, getting my nails done, Christmas. Loads of stuff.

SummerGardenFlowers · 07/10/2024 20:26

I don't get excited about stuff, but I also don't really get stressed (I think they're intertwined), I think I'm level headed but also sometimes think I'm a bit robotic in my responses to things. I've dealt with a huge amount of stress over the last decade and just about coped, I also work in a job where I need to remain level headed and not panic when things go awry (operating theatre). I can tell you that in a tits up situation, I'm the person you need around, I'll think of a solution and make it happen without even a hint of a raised heart rate.

I too got a new to me car recently, it's one I've wanted for absolutely ages and I was really pleased to get it, I love it and feel incredibly lucky to have it, but heart skipping excitement? Nope, didn't happen!! I think perhaps the only thing I can think of that would get me super excited would be actually winning the lottery or similar.

Shesnotelectric · 07/10/2024 20:37

Yes I am still like a little kid at times!!
I have a form of CVS where I literally get so wound up with excitement I become unwell or throw up! 🤣🤣
I wished I was joking halloween, birthday, holidays etc anything I am looking forward to basically, its especially worse at xmas! It can be embarrassing but everyone I know is so used to it so I just roll with it.

thicklysettled · 07/10/2024 20:46

Hmm. I think what some of us call "excitement" others would call pleasant anticipation.

For example, I'm very social and love a dinner and drinks with friends. I look forward to it every time but excited? No. Because like someone else upthread, there is predictability about it. Not that I don't enjoy it, but I don't get the rush I used to on the off-chance that the boy I fancied might be at the house party, etc.

At risk of joining the over-privileged seats, do people really get excited over getting a takeaway? Even for me, that's pretty pedestrian!

I don't get excited about anything. New car, definitely not, holidays, no, Christmas, no.
I like getting into clean sheets,
I appreciate the view when I walk my dog but I really can't say I feel excitement at anything.

I’ve screamed and sobbed with excitement in the Sistine Chapel.

I bet you got shushed 😃🤫

GentlemanJay · 07/10/2024 22:31

I'm a very happy person. I love my work, friends and hobbies. I too ordered a new car. It took for ages to come. I grew impatient, but was also exited. It finally arrived. It was lovely. I sat in it and on the second day of having it I realised I was no happier than the day before.

Moral of the story. Life shouldn't be about "stuff".

I feel like this thread is showing you (and usually me) as a minority!

I don't know if excitement means different things to different people, maybe? So for me, the excitement I feel about the new car is like when I was 7 and told I was taking a trip to Hamleys to pick out some Baby Born stuff. I couldn't stop thinking about it all week

But I can't think of anything else that's made me feel that giddy

I’m with you both. I got a brand new car for the first time ever recently, I was really pleased about it but not sure if excited is the word. I love driving it on a daily basis and enjoy the way it drives but excitement, nope not really.

i feel sad that I don’t get excited by things but I also rarely get angry or upset. I think my regular range of emotions is just smaller than many people’s range of emotions. Most of the time that protects me and suits me fine, I am contented generally but I would like the odd bit of excitement.

Jellycatspyjamas · 07/10/2024 22:44

I booked a very indulgent spa day and was excited about that, I've booked a nice weekend away with the kids and I'm excited about that too. I think the capacity for excitement is a good thing.

Timetocheersme · 07/10/2024 23:12

I wish I could get that excitement I used to get before going on a school trip. I've a good life with lots of joyful moments but excitement, not so much.

Timetocheersme · 07/10/2024 23:14

The more I think about it, 'pleasant anticipation' is more like what I feel nowadays.

NewName24 · 08/10/2024 00:30

How sad that so many people don't get excited about things.

I get excited about all sorts of things.

Going to the seaside / seeing a singer I've wanted to see for a long time / dc coming home after a long time of not seeing them / watching my team win / a relative or someone else who is close telling me they are getting married, or having a baby / my dc moving into their first house / an upcoming party, or occasion when I'm getting together with people I like spending time with / an exciting thing you've not done before / winning on the Premium Bonds (when I say winning, I'm talking £50, not the big one yet, but I get quite excited about it) / getting tickets to something (show, sporting event) when it was by no means guaranteed, and when the event is still some time away....... then when the event finally comes round and you are getting ready for it..
So many things.

Sgtmajormummy · 08/10/2024 07:44

I get my kicks from cooking.
Planning, shopping, executing, tasting. It’s like a second storyline to my life that I write every day.
I’m sure many people’s hobbies provide that excitement in a humdrum existence. Reading also springs to mind.

For me 'pleasant anticipation' is more sedate and with excitement, theres a certain anount of joy. I'm not saying I'm bouncing off walls or anything, but it's that feeling of yay 🥳, rather than 'that'll be nice'.

It depends in your outlook and everyday expeirence, I suppose. Atakeaway to me is an occasional treat. I might get excited if it's something I've been craving and something very unhealthy that I don't allow myself often!

Tumbleweed101 · 08/10/2024 07:56

I think being single and responsible for everything around my family has mostly sapped excitement from my life! I enjoy things but excitement is rare. Think the last time I was excited was when I got to fly to the US to visit friends and go to Yellowstone. I went on my own so was responsibility free for a couple weeks. I think freedom and lack of responsibility helps you get excited about things.

Sounds depressing that it takes a new car for you to be excited? Do you not feel excited about anything else in life? Even the little things?

I feel excited when I know I'm off work for a few days, I get excited when ordering a takeaway. Most recently I almost quite literally squealed with excitement because my favourite film announced a 7th release. I unfortunately have to wait until 2026 to watch it but still I'm excited. I get excited when I plan days out with my children or purchase something nice for myself. Little things excite me daily

Definitely. Knowing you’ve saved up loads of your favourite tv series to binge watch. A curry being delivered. Going to the supermarket and filling up the fridge. Friday night with a glass of wine. Saturday night and its candles lit and Strictly. A night out planned soon with all the family. Deffo pleasures to be excited about x

Cherryana · 08/10/2024 08:13

It might not wear off. I have had my car for close to 8 years and STILL almost every time I get in it -I acknowledge that I LOVE my steering wheel and seat. After years of driving I can’t believe there would be a better size and height car for me. It’s a mini countryman. I am sad it’s getting older!!

Netcam · 08/10/2024 08:25

I get excited about a few things. Going on holiday, relaxing at the weekend after a busy week at work, meeting up with a friend, Saturday night when DH cooks dinner. Not so much things I buy though, or maybe some nice food. It's our wedding anniversary today, I'm excited about spending the evening with DH with some special food for dinner and a little prosecco.

CocoMaroon · 08/10/2024 08:43

I feel excited when I see the postman 🤣 Even though most of the time it’s just bills or junk ha ha

Pepperypottery · 08/10/2024 08:58

I can only see candles/relaxing for the weekend/quiet Saturday as being in direct opposition to excitement. Not that they aren’t lovely and enjoyable. But to me the OP is about that feeling (for me mostly from childhood) of
heart beating fast but not in an unpleasant way
needing to move or jump around
a feeling of sort of explosion in the chest
actually wanting to make an eeee sound
automatic unbidden and constant smile
a feeling of lightness
a physical rush

When I see my seven year old meeting a friend for a play date and just having to run and shout and laugh, that seems to me to be excitement.

If I do get a rush of excitement now it’s very rare and short before some other reality or thought takes over again

GameOfJones · 08/10/2024 09:11

I save in Premium Bonds precisely because I love the excitement of opening up the app each month and seeing if I've won something. Usually not, but I get very excited before I click the button to reveal my results so it is all worth it!

I most recently got that giddy excitement heading on our summer holiday..... I think I was more excited than the children! And for Christmas, I just love it so I'm excited for that too.

Leavesandacorns · 08/10/2024 09:19

Yes, I'm really easily excited. I'm also quick to feel happy, sad, anxious etc... everything except anger really.

I don't think I have very good control over my emotions (though I'm good at faking it!). I'm jealous of people who can keep their emotions in a more relaxed and zen state.

Crushed23 · 08/10/2024 10:26

I feel excited all the time!

I fill my calendar with fun and interesting activities and I feel genuine excitement as they approach.

For example, I am climbing a mountain in Greece at the end of the month and I can't wait 🤩

NotYetti · 08/10/2024 10:44

No, can't remember the last time I felt excited. Just anxious.
