Do you feel excited as an adult?

Okay, so this is an extremely privileged post. I am really sorry if this is a bit of a kick in the teeth to people living in very difficult times.

I order a new car and I am feeling extremely excited about it - it meets the needs of my family and it's lovely. It won't be ready to collect for a few months

I have realised, this is the first time in my recent adult life that I've felt any excitement?

I had terrible HG with my pregnancy time so didn't feel excited at all. Just relief and desperation for it to all be over! I was pregnant on my wedding day and was lucky to get photos where I didn't look close to death

I have come to realise I genuinely cannot say when the last time was that I felt ANY excitement

I have felt content. Which is logically far more stable an emotion

I know weirdly feel annoyed at myself for being excited Hmm and keep reminding myself this will all end and it won't be exciting anymore so to just quit whilst I'm ahead

I get excited when i dont have to be an adult.
I hate having responsibility and avoid it as much as i can.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 07/10/2024 19:17

I booked a holiday last night and had forgotten about it for a while. When I remembered I got an actual physical rush of excitement! I'm 61 😊

Enjoy your new car!

Oh my goodness yes! This evening I was collecting the brown pods from my dying sweet peas to save the seeds and was excited thinking about growing them again next year, for free. I'm excited everytime I sell a piece of work. I'm so excited when waiting on the train platform to meet my daughter and toddler grandson off the train, when they're coming to visit. I was ridiculously excited when I saw the first frog in the pond I dug earlier this year. There are so many exciting little things...

Jammedchakra · 07/10/2024 19:43

I’ve screamed and sobbed with excitement in the Sistine Chapel.

WonderingWanda · 07/10/2024 19:55

I'm clearly very excitable as I'm always getting excited by quite small things. Christmas and birthdays, seeing family and friends, opening Amazon boxes when I have no recollection of what I ordered. Recently I was very excited to try out my new sewing machine. I was also excited to spend a day in my pyjamas at home watching TV. Also excited to go to gigs. Get a new hair cut. Every Friday for for end of the working week. To find time to watch some mindless trash of my own choice like Greys Anatomy or Emily in Paris. Going on holiday. Reading a new book.

AutumnalCosiness · 07/10/2024 19:59

I still get excited about xmas, holidays, new jobs...am 48 😂

AutumnalCosiness · 07/10/2024 20:02

AutumnalCosiness · 07/10/2024 20:03

Excited when we got our puppy 💖💖💖

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 07/10/2024 20:05

I was excited about my recent birthday, very excited about adopting my cat, excited about meeting a friend today & currently very excited about plans for Christmas. And I’m also happy most of the time.

GreenMarigold · 07/10/2024 20:07

I get excited about family birthdays and Christmas, and about going on holiday - even from the initial planning stages - or even just the prospect of a long car journey going somewhere new for a day out.

I was very excited before we got our kittens.

I get excited about the little things too, like checking premium bond wins or getting a bargain at the shops!

ParrotPirouette · 07/10/2024 20:11

I’m another excited all the time person. Excited for days out, high days and holidays :)

I feel quite sad that some people don’t have anything to be excited about.

AmICrazyToEvenBother · 07/10/2024 20:12

I often feel excited.

I feel excited about seeing my daughter once I've finished work, seeing friends I havent seen for a while, going out somewhere nice, holidays, doing something I don't get to do much any more (like go to the theatre), starting a new book or finishing a book I'm really into, doing things that are new for my daughter.

It's not all high level excitement, but I feel that spark in the pit of my stomach to varying degrees about quite a lot of things.

HappierTimesAhead · 07/10/2024 20:12

I get excited when I think about my kids and knowing I will get to see them when I finish work. Then that first hug is so amazing and I feel this rush of love. Then 5 minutes later they are screaming at me and I am wishing for bedtime. Motherhood is a funny old thing.

AgainandagainandagainSS · 07/10/2024 20:13

I find it hard to get excited about anything since my beloved gran died.

You’ve clearly not seen the thread 😂

Bessica1970 · 07/10/2024 20:13

I don’t get excited about anything - haven’t for years!

I don’t think I’m depressed because I don’t get lows either. Everything is just flat. I would say I’m happy with my life, and content - but don’t get ‘highs’ of excitement.

I get palpitations sometimes if I’ve been drinking full caffeine coffee. I quite enjoy it though because it reminds me what excitement felt like.

Haha I get that completely.

I rarely feel excited. I got a new car last year and was very happy but not excited. I'm not entirely sure what it means as an adult to be honest.

I'll stand in non excited solidarity with you!

I consider myself quite a happy person and I certainly enjoy many things that I do in my life. I look forward to weekend pilates, I enjoy the breeze and fresh air on a dog walk through the woods, I feel happy and at peace relaxing on holiday, I like a meal out with my friends.

But excited? No.

I wonder whether my idea of excited is different to other people's. Because why don't I get excited or feel excitement? It hadn't occurred to me that I missed it or that other people lived their adult lives frequently feeling excited.

I felt a buzz seeing the northern lights, going on a ski mobile etc. But I think my emotions are more in the moment rather than looking forward to these things. And I'm not sure i class a buzz in the moment as excitement, but maybe it is.

Who knows. Interesting question OP!

liquidsquidli · 07/10/2024 20:16

Yes all the time and about all sort of stuff now. I think it's a sign of being content and settled

But I have spent a lot of time with massive anxiety and an impending sense of doom. Anxiety and excitement -They are not happy bedfellows.

I'm excited by going to a new restaurant, a new coat I've wanted for ages, a holiday, night away with friends, a concert, work trip. We are moving house.

Enjoy your new car OP

liquidsquidli · 07/10/2024 20:18

My husband went shopping on Saturday and bough us a Christmas pudding to eat this week.

Peak excitement! I cannot wait for it!

Awww I’m so happy for you stepintohannakey.
Doesn’t matter if people are going through difficult times it’s still nice to hear other people’s good news .
I’m looking forward to (hopefully) feeling excited about something in the future . All I feel right now is dread constantly and it’s a horrible feeling . I hope you enjoy your new car when you get it .
