How many times a week do you go food shopping?

I probably go to the shops 4 times a week or every other day. I buy little and often but I’m sure I spend more that way. On the other hand, if I get a delivery and try to stock up I find I waste a lot as it’s only me and a teenager at home and it’s hard to plan too far in advance.

I’ve stopped myself shopping today and I am going to make do with what we have in the fridge and maybe I can save a bit if I do that regularly.

I was wondering if other people go to the shops as much as me?!

I used to shop ad hoc, and there's no doubt it massively increased my costs and my wastage.

I swapped, at first, to shopping every 5 days or so. We had a relatively small fridge which was the first barrier. And the other was that I wasn't used to the level of planning required to make it work. We recently got a second fridge and I've got used to planning so now I regularly do shop for a full week at a time, with very very minor additional shopping on top.

Co-Op, which is our local convenience store, has definitely lost a big chunk of their income as a result! Grin and we are saving. There are a lot of things that are notably more expensive when purchasing from these sorts of shop and it very quickly adds up.

To give you an example - I meal plan, and buy all veggies for that week based on the mealplan. I also consider whether, if I buy one packet of vegetable A, I can use that vegetable twice to ensure I don't landup with waste. Ditto, if I know I'll have leftovers because I'm cooking the famous MN roast chicken, what do I plan to eat the following day to use up that chicken.

I also save by taking advantage of savings resulting from a) buying from bigger supermarkets and b) because I can store things so can buy the bigger tub or the BOGOHF offers etc. This is particularly true across pretty much every type of product from cleaning stuff, to meat, to alcohol.

A third benefit is that some of the "treat' foods get eaten within 2 days, no matter how much I buy or how often. So this way, the family know - I will buy x or y, but they only come once a week. After that, if you've eaten them all, tough. Another saving.

I get one grocery delivery once a week and that's it. I meal plan and use everything, it doesn't get wasted. We get a range of fresh food and the stuff that goes off first gets used first. I don't like shopping in person as I have a toddler with me and it's not fun for her or me.

RandomUsernameHere · 07/10/2024 14:48

None usually, I get one online shop delivered every week, always on the same day at the same time.

Meadowfinch · 07/10/2024 14:48

Once, to Tesco, the village butcher, and Waitrose for bread.

The only time I go twice is when Waitrose has run out of wholemeal and I go again on a weekday morning.

I'm a single working mum. I don't have time to go more often.

betterangels · 07/10/2024 14:54

Once every ten days. If I run out of milk I'll pick it up, otherwise I make do and eat from cupboards and freezer.

coxesorangepippin · 07/10/2024 14:55

Pretty much daily

We live close to supermarkets

Cynic17 · 07/10/2024 14:58

Twice a week for 2 adults. Don't do online supermarket shopping.

Beautiful3 · 07/10/2024 14:58

I shop once a week for groceries. It's rare I'll pop to the corner shop for milk/bread/emergency chocolate!

coffeesaveslives · 07/10/2024 15:04

In person - never. Online - once a week. Always get everything we need and have never needed to a top-up shop unless we've had unexpected guests or something.

StMarieforme · 07/10/2024 15:08

I go all over the place as DD27 is ND and has some strict preferences. So probably 3/4 times a week. All at different places. I live in a city tho so it's not hard.

Happyher · 07/10/2024 15:11

I do a big supermarket shop once a week and usually one top up for milk and anything else needed

RuthW · 07/10/2024 15:27

Delivered on a Saturday

That's it til the following Saturday

SatinHeart · 07/10/2024 15:28

Two equal sized online shops a week (I have a delivery pass so don't pay individual delivery charges). Means I only have to plan 3-4 days in advance.

MyStylish40s · 07/10/2024 15:33

Twice a week

BlackStrayCat · 07/10/2024 15:38

Delivery once every 9 days.
No car. Tight budget.
1 teen 1 adult 1 cat

Works well.

FelixtheAardvark · 07/10/2024 15:45

Big shop every 10 days or so (delivered).
Meat every week (good farm shop butchers nearby).
Bread every 3 days.
Plus odd trips if anyone fancies something special not covered above.

NewName24 · 07/10/2024 15:47

I do 'the weekly shop' but probably will pop into a shop for something extra by about day 5.

Crunchymum · 07/10/2024 15:50

Far too often.

Downside of WFH is that I live across the road from several supermarkets.

In the crappy weather it's often my default place to go to have a break. Or if I can't be arsed to meal plan I just got each day and grab what I fancy cooking that day.

It's not at all cost effective and sometimes I think "let me grab X" and end up spending an extra tenner.

I really need to sort it out.

GroovyChick87 · 07/10/2024 15:51

One big shop and I do top up shops for milk, bread and extras most days.

maddiemookins16mum · 07/10/2024 15:52

One, on a Saturday. On very rare occasions, so maybe twice a month), I might have to pop the Coop for a loaf (or cake if Bake Off is on).

Fakepower · 07/10/2024 15:55

1 big shop a week £150-£200 for 4 of us I loathe going for top ups and try to avoid it wherever possible. The local tesco is more expensive than the main one which annoys me so I refuse to go to it whenever possible and the big tesco is just a faff to be bothered to drive to it (across town, lots of stop-start traffic and junctions/roundabouts/traffic humps. sigh)

LouH5 · 07/10/2024 15:56

It’s me, my boyfriend and our cat in our home.

He does a “big shop” once a week (usually a Tuesday, just fits in best with work) and spends around £60.

I’ll do a top up shop on my way home on Friday, but that’s mainly for weekend treats, veg for our Sunday dinner, and nice weekend breakfast bits. I usually spend £20.

Beezknees · 07/10/2024 16:07

I go nearly every day. I live 5 minutes walk from the superstores.

HappyAutumn · 07/10/2024 16:07

I live near a supermarket too so it’s very convenient to just pop in. I pick up a basket and think I will get a few things for about £15 but I can still spend £35! If I go with my teen it will be even more.

I shop once a week and meal plan all lunches and dinners, it works well for me.
