Newspaper Subscription - The Times has gone batshit

BovrilonToast · 06/10/2024 20:17

I’ve come to the conclusion I need to give up my Times subscription - they have just published an article about how Angela Rayner bought her boyfriend an expensive suit for Xmas. Whilst pre election I found the reporting relatively balanced, that appears to have gone by the wayside.

So - does anyone have any other recommendations for good balanced reporting (I am a member of the left leaning wokerati - so not the Telegraph)

They are banging on about the freebies thing to a ridiculous extent, you’re right. I find it difficult to get excited about it.

BovrilonToast · 06/10/2024 20:40

Same here - especially after the last decade with the tories 🤦‍♀️

I subscribe to Apple News, cheaper than the times and you can read some of their articles plus lots more.

If you fancy joining your local library, lots of them have a subscription to "press reader" which has a lot of the major papers including (though not the times). You could use that to experiment with what you like and find one that suits you?

It doesn't do me for daily reading but I read the economist on a semi regular basis which is quite interesting. I also quite like the financial times but I used to get that through work so not sure if it's on press reader. I combine those with the guardian and the BBC.

Not newspapers, but the news agents podcast and also the BBC's newscast are both good for daily news updates.

The Guardian is free and has lots to read.

That’s a great idea - I will try that and see which one I like the look of.

The financial times is good. It is very calm.

ChocNice · 06/10/2024 21:53

Great idea about the library access! Thanks

The Guardian is free and has lots to read.

I used to have a Guardian subscription, then they whacked the price up… but I suppose I’m paying similar for the Times now…

I’m a prolific reader and get through the article allocation in a day or two…

Edited

I just read it on the Internet and it doesn't cost me anything?

I wondered about the FT - I read their free ones often. Are they good for lifestyle and leisure too?

Thank you - I’ll have another look - it kept limiting the number of article I could read a while ago - maybe they’ve changed it now.

There are so many reasons why I'd want to kick the Guardian in the goolies...... but, seriously, what other (free) options are there...

So expensive though.

I read the guardian. My father is a big fan like the I/Inews.

OnlyTheBravest · 06/10/2024 22:30

I gave up my times subscription early this year. It was beginning to read just like the Daily Mail and there were less and less quality pieces.

I like the the look of the FT but not currently subscribing to any paper at the moment. Just using a combination of free sites on internet. BBC, TES and Evening standard.

Awdecca · 06/10/2024 22:33

I was sorry to leave the Times because I loved the crosswords! But the endless culture war comments wore me down. I was much happier once I stopped reading it!

MakemineaGandT · 06/10/2024 22:33

Gave up the Times a couple of years ago after I realised it was turning into a slightly more refined Daily Mail. I don’t miss it at all.

LostMySocks · 06/10/2024 22:36

The trouble with papers these days is that they are so polarised and cover completely different topics. I've resorted to free articles from the Mail, guardian and BBC to try and get a bit of balance.

EasternStandard · 06/10/2024 22:41

The Guardian sounds like it’s closest to what you’re after

Mmhmmn · 06/10/2024 22:43

The i is supposed to be neutral. Haven’t read it though

ExquisiteIyDecorated · 06/10/2024 22:49

They seem to be obsessed with Harry and Meghan too and not in a good way. I was wondering about Apple News, will look into that.

mitogoshigg · 06/10/2024 22:52

If you read the guardian via msn there's no article limit

Awdecca · 06/10/2024 22:54

I read it through Chrome. No limit, although I did donate last year.

Viviennemary · 06/10/2024 22:57

I just read the articles that are free. I wouldn't encourage any of them by subscribing.

It limits the number you can read on the app, but not if you go through your browser / Chrome etc.
