Strange coincidences

KimberleyClark · 06/10/2024 10:46

I regularly buy books from charity shops. My DH started reading one and pointed out to me there is a name written on the flyleaf - my first name and my maiden surname. My first name is a very ordinary one that has not been popular since the 60s/70s. My maiden surname is very common think Jones or Williams. The handwriting even looks similar to mine!

Any other strange coincidences?

I'm not sure that's particularly strange, although maybe slightly unnerving when you see it. Does your name twin have good taste in books? 😬

Blusterydaytodaypoohbear · 06/10/2024 10:51

Not sure coincidence but odd... Dc's dob are
Dc1 17/6
Dc2 6/3
Dc3 3/11
Dc4. 31/1...

We picked up a book in a charity shop that had belonged to the headteacher of my the school my dd was attending at the time.

I have an unusual first name and second name, yet there are 2 of me who use my pharmacy. It’s caused confusion a few times and all the pharmacy staff comment on how strange it is. Neither first or last name are common at all.

Am I missing something?

Being as you probably live in the same area that's not unreasonable.

DD2 lived in a house in London last year. Her address was 23 (name of road). when we were first dating in the mid 1980s, DH and I lived at 22 (name of road) - right over the road!

Malaguena123 · 06/10/2024 11:00

I'm from the north and I went to a professional event in London. Person running event went to my school and had same teachers for our subject that we were discussing, just 3-4 years apart!

Sethera · 06/10/2024 11:01

Are you sure it isn't a book you owned previously and gave away?

TickingAlongNicely · 06/10/2024 11:02

We have an unusual surname (3000ish in the country). DDs first name is reasonably uncommon (about 150 babies per year).

There is another woman with her first name surname combination in our small city. No relation, only two in the country.

No it isn’t, I’d not heard of the author until earlier this year - friend recommendation, and this particular book was not published until several years after I married, so even if I was in the habit of writing my name in books which I am not, I would not have written my maiden name!

DS1 born at 8am on 8th Nov, DS2 born at 8pm on 8th April.

But that would be more odd if DC4 was born on the 11th, surely?

Perhaps there is a parallel universe where you were still unmarried when the book came out, and you bought it and perhaps wrote your name in it because in that universe you have a cheeky friend who borrows without returning, and you lent her the book . Now, somehow, the book has crossed over into this universe!

(lighthearted of course! 😄)

DD was on a plane flying to the States to visit family who live over there. The American couple sitting next to her on the flight got chatting to her, and not only were they travelling to the same small town in America, they turned out to be our relatives' next-door neighbours.

Similar happened to us - helped a woman with her baby buggy down the stairs of the plane. Two hours' drive to my ILs and she was staying with their neighbour!

Have you been reading the Midnight Library?!

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 06/10/2024 11:39

I once worked in a community college, when I opened the drawer of a filing cabinet my dad's name was stamped on the metal divider (we have a very unusual spelling of an uncommon surname). Apparently they had it donated to them some years before. My dad hadn't worked in an office for over 30 years. As he had died the year before I found it incredibly comforting to have it in my office.

Started reading a series of books a while back….I’d been reading a while when I started to realise that all the lead characters shared names with family….DH, SIL, DH’s ExW…relatively unusual combination of names so it felt quite amusing. The main character’s daughter was born on my birthday, and then gave her car the same rather unusual name I called mine…felt a bit weird then tbh!

A friend went on a day trip to Brighton from Bournemouth and bumped into her old Guide Captain who was on a week's holiday from Sunderland.

We were at the beach this summer and dd bent over because she saw something colourful in the sand. It was a rock with her name painted on it. She has a lovely name, but it’s not a common one. Think something your granny might be called like Rosemary or Gwendolyn.

BloodandGlitter · 06/10/2024 14:14

DS and DGS share the same birthday 10 years apart. DS and DD have a 10 year gap between them.

BloodandGlitter · 06/10/2024 14:15

Dc1 17/6
Dc2 6/3
Dc3 3/11
Dc4. 31/1...

The numbers move up one space with each subsequent birthday.

What's weird about that?
