Do your Kitchen cabinets...

Go all the way to the ceiling?

I hate the top of the cabinet and it gets so filthy (because I'm too lazy to clean it) and it's such a waste of space.

Most kitchens have this useless gap, very few go to the ceiling.

Wouldn't look odd to have it to the ceiling?

It’s what I’m going to have when I replace mine. It seems to be the norm in American kitchens

saveforthat · 06/10/2024 08:04

I like the gap. I've got millions of cookbooks that fit there and sparkly lights. They do get dusty though.

InTheRainOnATrain · 06/10/2024 08:08

We don’t have wall cabinets at all now, which I much prefer as because the worktop below feels more open. But in our last kitchen which was much smaller so we had to have them to gave enough storage we had them customised to run all the way up to the ceiling. The gap is one of my pet hates as it’s a pointless dust trap!

BigcatLittlecat · 06/10/2024 08:08

I bought a house with cabinets that go to ceiling! So much better! No sticky dust up there! And bigger cupboards! I highly recommend!

BarbaraHoward · 06/10/2024 08:09

It's more expensive to get them up to the ceiling because then they have to be custom made. I'd definitely do it next time we do our kitchen if I can afford it.

needhelpwiththisplease · 06/10/2024 08:09

I have no wall cabinets

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 06/10/2024 08:10

As per pp, it's more of an American thing. I've lined the tops of mine with newspaper and just replace it here and there. I don't think it looks odd but you'd need a pulley system or a way to reach the top shelf of what's in them, to make them useful, I suppose.

liquidsquidli · 06/10/2024 08:11

We need the storage. Or I need to get rid of DH and his hoarding and hobbies

billysboy · 06/10/2024 08:11

How are u going to reach things in the top ?

liquidsquidli · 06/10/2024 08:13

It's for infrequently used thing- cake boxes, baking tins, seasonal stuff and stuff, odd cleaning bits, lightbulbs and so on

OP posts:
muddyford · 06/10/2024 08:13

Mine are to the ceiling and I have a little set of steps to reach the top shelf, though that's not often.

Put the stuff you need v infrequently up there and use a step stool. Or stick DH’s stuff up there and he’s probably taller than OP so will be able to reach more easily and added bonus it gets it out the way!

liquidsquidli · 06/10/2024 08:15

@InTheRainOnATrain I am going to do that Grin

Mine go all the way up to the ceiling. I like the bigger cupboards and I think it looks much better anyway.

nbee84 · 06/10/2024 08:20

Yes, when we replaced our kitchen I particularly wanted cabinets that reached the ceiling.
I always used to end up putting stuff on top of the old cabinets, things that didn't get used very often. But then when you go to get that item to use it would be dusty and sticky and need a good wash first. It would also not look pretty with all these random items shoved up there.
Now I put all the things on the top shelves and they stay clean and it looks neat and tidy. I bought a little set of mini steps that I keep in the cupboard so I can easily access the top shelves when I need to.

Giggorata · 06/10/2024 08:33

I am awaiting an estimate for building additional cupboards above the existing wall cupboards in my kitchen. They are going to be flat and plain and painted the same colour as the walls.

DilemmaDelilah · 06/10/2024 08:37

When we had our new kitchen designed I specified that I wanted the cupboards to go right up to the ceiling. Our previous cabinets didnt and, quite apart from the tops getting all greasy and dusty, my DH found it a very useful space to stash things so the kitchen always looked a mess. His excuse was that we didn't have enough storage. We now have more storage than we could ever have imagined! (It's still full though)

seven201 · 06/10/2024 16:56

Mine go up to the ceiling. Love them. We have a storage space down low for the fold out step stool.

T4phage · 06/10/2024 17:25

We got rid of all our cabinets, top and bottom and have a freestanding larder and a tall cabinet to keep everything in. It's great. No kitchen cupboards to clean and crawl around on the floor trying to find pans and things and more space in the kitchen because it's not dominated by cabinets. I can't believe how much better it feels and wish we'd done it years ago. We still have a hob and sink with some bench space and a cupboard under the sink for cleaning products, but that's all.

Clutterbugsmum · 06/10/2024 17:27

No but when I replace the kitchen they will do. And the doors will be flat and bloody tiny raised decoration where all the grime get stuck.

I’d need a huge larder and tall cabinet!
I couldn’t imagine not having cabinets - what takes their place in your kitchen?

Lighttodark · 06/10/2024 17:32

I think the idea is practical but would be concerned about the cupboards looking too tall and out of proportion. It might look quite boxy

A tall IKEA cabinet with everything in - pots, pans, utensils, herbs/spices, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, plates and bowls etc. I can see what we have at a glance and no more raking through cupboards. Less cleaning too.

I think I need to declutter…

Buildingthefuture · 06/10/2024 17:39

Yes. It’s a pet hate of mine when they don’t. Room has to be big enough though or have massively high ceilings so units go up to picture rail height and leave a decent gap. Also hate this fashion for no wall units. It’s either blank walls or shelves, which just look so messy I think? And where do you put everything? Still, how boring life would be if we all liked the same things.
