What’s the furthest distance time-wise that you would prefer to drive for a day trip?

Not the maximum but the longest preferred?

Theres a place about 1.5 hours away and I’m hemming and hawing over it. I think my maximum is an hour. I have a friend who will happily drive 2 hours which seems so long to me.

Generally an hour for something just me DH and the kids, would stretch to 1h30 for meeting friends we haven’t seen in a while, or I guess 1h45 for something really special!

I preface this by saying I am in Canada, so used to very long drives.
I like to do about two and half hours, stop for a pee/coffee/stretch, and then I'm good for another two or three hours.

Scutterbug · 05/10/2024 23:52

It is three hours each way to see one of my daughters and we happily do that.

NinetyNineOrangeBalloons · 05/10/2024 23:53

It depends on what the day trip is. My general rule is that I don’t want to be driving for longer than I’m actually there.

leia24 · 05/10/2024 23:54

I would drive about 2.5 hours for a really good day trip or a really exciting concert etc

NinetyNineOrangeBalloons · 05/10/2024 23:54

But I probably wouldn’t do more thah 2 hours each way for preference - I’d start considering an overnight stay if it was longer than that.

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 05/10/2024 23:54

1.5 for day trip is definitely manageable for many. I guess there may be personal reason ls why it wouldn't be possible for everyone....or for you...?

Growlybear83 · 05/10/2024 23:55

I would happily drive for two hours each way.

Honestly if I can stay in a Premier Inn I will. 1.5 hours is probably my max. But I live somewhere with no motorways and generally don't do long distance driving ever. I mostly just pootle around the county taking DD to sports matches. I can see if you regularly drive longer distances then 2 hours + wouldn't be a deal breaker. For longer cross country trips we've always just taken the train, it's a nicer journey and I can read, watch a tablet, crochet or talk to DD rather than concentrating on the road

4405cd · 05/10/2024 23:56

About 2 hrs depending on the reason/ occasion.

Imahosy · 05/10/2024 23:57

2.5 hours each way, getting into too tired to drive safely much more after that.

yeesh · 06/10/2024 00:00

90 mins I wouldn’t even think about, make the journey part of the day out.

For a day trip though? So coming back the same evening?

If you spend 5-6 hours driving somewhere, and 5-6 hours driving back the same day, are you actually spending any useful time in the place you’ve driven to?

I used to live in Canada and am happy doing long drives, but I then stay where I have driven to for a couple of days to enjoy actually being there…

DappledThings · 06/10/2024 00:07

Couple of hours fine for me. I'd do it as all day though so if with DC would stay for dinner wherever we are then put them back in car in pyjamas after about 7.30. Not risking a long nap at 5pm.

My brother is about 2 hours away. Would usually stay over but have gone there and back in a day comfortably.

MrsAvocet · 06/10/2024 00:10

I guess it depends where you live, but I wouldn't do very much if I didn't drive for longer than an hour for a day out - that just about gets me to to the nearest motorway junction. I used to drive 2 hours each way to take my DS to his sports training on an evening after school. My PILs live just under 3 hours drive from us and we do that as I day trip. I'd probably draw the line at about 4 hours.

DaftyLass · 06/10/2024 00:14

I really don't mind driving, so I would drive four or five hours to go to an event, or out to lunch with someone I don't see often, or to a fair or something, then drive home.

I usually stay over night if it's something really active like hiking/canoeing/skiing, but if I am chilling at the other end then I'm fine.

GalaticalFarce · 06/10/2024 00:15

Happy to do up to 2hrs though I do more as well. I do 2hrs 40 mins a few times a year to visit family. We go for the day.
I drive an automatic now and it makes long drives easier for me.

JBJ · 06/10/2024 00:28

1.5 hours max ideally, but that's because I have disabilities and struggle with pain driving for longer than that in one go. I'm ok if I can have regular breaks, but for a day trip, I'd prefer to do the whole trip in one go.

Livinginaclock · 06/10/2024 00:33

Generally 2 hours, but would up it to 3 for something special.

Cobblersorchard · 06/10/2024 00:46

1.5hrs is a common one for me, my parents live 1.5 away.
But I will do 2.5 at a push. We drive in to London fairly often which takes about 2.5.

I do 1hr each way to the office and 20 mins for nearest supermarket so 1.5 is in my easy range.

NewName24 · 06/10/2024 01:06

I personally don't like to drive more than two hours, but it does depend on what it is for.
There are a few people who live around 1 hr 45 - 2 hrs 15 away that I would drive to in the morning, have lunch, go and walk or do something in the afternoon, then have some tea and cake then drive home.
But I wouldn't do the same length drive, for example to go to a shopping centre. The fact I want to spend a decent amount of quality time with them means I am happy to do that occasionally.
OTOH, if there is something specific, I want to go to, that is only in that place (maybe a gig or a sports fixture or even a beach), then I am happy to be driven a longer distance to it by one of my dc, who all still love driving. So, 'time in car' is different from 'me driving' an the distance, depends on 'what for?'

Thisisntme1 · 06/10/2024 01:26

We live in Australia but often drive 2.5/3 hours to our nearest capital city for a day out and back again the same day. Might be to go to the zoo, shopping or to the football.
Anything more than that would probably be an overnight trip.

LonelyInDville · 06/10/2024 01:41

Depends on how long we will be there. But usually 2hours tops (one way)

Catsmere · 06/10/2024 02:18

I like driving, but have never had to go more than 30 minutes each way. Most of the day-trip places here (western Victoria) are much longer trips than that. I don't fancy long drives, because it makes a very long day overall, I'd be clock-watching all the time, and I don't like leaving my cats alone for long periods.
