What’s the furthest distance time-wise that you would prefer to drive for a day trip?

Not the maximum but the longest preferred?

Theres a place about 1.5 hours away and I’m hemming and hawing over it. I think my maximum is an hour. I have a friend who will happily drive 2 hours which seems so long to me.

2 hours but i really do not like driving. Nor do i like being a car passenger either.

Any longer and i'd sooner take the train. Or even a coach is preferable to me, tbh.

I thought of another factor.
One family member lives what ought to be 2 hr 15mins away, but to date, I don't think anyone has every done it in that time as the route is notorious for hold ups. My sister (who lives near me) came from there the other day and it took them 4 hours. I've also had an occasion when it took me 5 hours. It is a route that is commonly blocked (motorway accidents) but anywhere off the motorway gets gridlocked immediately.
Whereas I have another relative who is 2 hours away, and there are never hold ups on that route.

2/3 hours if I really wanted to go, but probably around an hour and half for something I wasn’t too bothered about.

It's 6 hours drive each way from London to Paris. So you drove for 12 hours in a day? That is unsafe and nothing to boast about. If you were driving for work it is against the law to drive for more than 10 hours in 24 hours. So please, for your sake and for the others on the road, understand that this is not normal or healthy and don't do it again.

90 mins home to Eurotunnel or ferry. Rest up crossing the channel then three hours to Paris. Drop off dc cup of tea and then drive back via supper. I wouldn’t want to do it every day, but perfectly doable. Most weeks I’ll do a 3-7 hour drive. It’s not wasted time, either chatting with family or podcasts or radio.

Two hours.

I think we’re outliers!
I live in south london so any journey takes an hour- any less and I’d walk or bus.
I drove down to Devon for the eclipse for the day, regularly drove to Durham and back for dc University. I’ve driven to Cardiff, and Swansea (missed train, funeral)
Both sets of parents are 2/3 hours away.
My dearest friends are 2 hours away and I wouldn’t think twice of going to theirs’ for the day.

Edited

I am glad to read this reply - honestly I am gobsmacked by some of the other replies - 90 minutes or you stay the night, I can't get my head around it. We could never afford that many hotels, and I wouldn't want to stay away that often (not judging just my life and feelings)

I would do all the trips you mention, we are you in reverse.

South west, would think nothing of driving to London, Nottingham Birmingham etc. Leeds is 5.5 hours (one way, we left early, I slept in the car over lunch break, then drove back) that's the furthest I've ever been in a day (as a lone driver) and I wouldn't want to do that again, but under 10 no worries.

Wolframandhart · 07/10/2024 21:20

Depends who is driving. If it is me, an hour and a half. If it is dh, i dont care, ill sit there being passenger princess half the day.

Wolframandhart · 07/10/2024 21:22

I am considering driving an hour to the airport, then flying 35 mins to northern ireland, and back for a day trip. Go for lunch in belfast.

CrikeyMajikey · 07/10/2024 21:24

If the time spent travelling is more than the time spent there, then I’m not going.

BottomlessBrunch · 07/10/2024 21:25

For a day trip ideally no more than 1.5 hours although there's a family member who lives 2 hours away but it's a beautiful drive and always a very relaxing day being there so that's generally the only exception

KatieL5 · 07/10/2024 21:33

I do up to 3 hours each way to attend sporting events. Anything more than that and I’d stop overnight.

More often than not I prefer to go by train for longer trips. Far more relaxing to sit back, relax and have a glass of wine on the train than drive for hours.

Cynic17 · 07/10/2024 21:34

I drive 2.5 to 3 hours each way to meet some friends for lunch (we all live in different places across the country). It's a full day, but works out fine.

HundredMilesAnHour · 07/10/2024 21:37

I quite happily drive 3 hours to visit friends or for a day trip. I love my car and I love driving. I'm less bothered about length of time and more bothered about sitting in traffic. I'll happily drive for hours if the roads are flowing but where I live (inner London) the traffic is appalling so it can easily add 1.5+ hours on to a journey before I've even got as far as the M25. And don't get me started on the Blackwall Tunnel!
