The casual things that wealthy people take for granted

Inspired by a thread that’s gone totally off topic….where someone suggested a £400 watch was cheap.

What’s the most casual (even accidental) brag you’ve ever heard a wealthy person say?

I can start as I know someone who celebrated a big birthday recently and is an absolutely lovely person but during their party (in the wonderful house) they said “oh! Here comes the string quartet. I had completely forgotten about them!”

My friends ex husband who when talking about sending their kids to private school casually stated " I mean it's only £1k a month each". Ironically he's done a vanishing act and pays nothing towards those fees 🙄

TheProvincialLady · 04/10/2024 21:33

Casually taking things for granting and boasting are two entirely separate things.

Disappearedwife · 04/10/2024 21:34

Im not particularly wealthy but a £400 watch IS cheap.

An expensive watch is well into the thousands (£3k+). £400 is probably just a metal/plastic watch.

Next thing I’m going to hear is that £50 is an expensive hand bag 😂😂😂

cunoyerjudowel · 04/10/2024 21:34

My aunt buys Opera tickets and often will just miss it- cause she doesn't fancy it, I didn't think much of it until she told me how much the tickets were

starlitsnow · 04/10/2024 21:36

Buying one of every dessert because they can’t decide, sampling each and then leaving the rest.

Disappearedwife · 04/10/2024 21:36

My in laws moaned about the food being too rich and there being too much wine on their recent week long vineyard tour of Bordeaux. (£3k per person). They said they found all the eating and drinking draining and tiresome.

OMG

I know. It was so painful having to keep a straight face and pretend sympathy.

they also said they were dreading their month long trip to a hot country last January as they were dreading pack their suitcases and all the effort and washing and ironing clothes etc. And the thought of packing alone was putting them off going to the point they thought they might not bother and just stay at home and lose the money because it was too much effort.

these are real people…

A colleague of mine buys expensive clothes online and if she doesn't like them she actually bins them as it's too much hassle to return or take to a charity shop.

@Disappearedwife "My in laws moaned about the food being too rich and there being too much wine on their recent week long vineyard tour of Bordeaux. (£3k per person). They said they found all the eating and drinking draining and tiresome."

Isn't that just picking the wrong holiday, regardless of cost? And the buying and leaving all the puddings is just crass and wasteful and tasteless. It would be the same if they bought a box of cheap chocolates, took a bite out of each one and threw them away.....

Well done on your humble brag on not being "particularly wealthy".

In what world is £400 cheap for a watch?

The lady I used to work for used to go shopping, spend £200+ on clothes then never wear them. Used to fill the fridge (massive double one) with food that just went in the bin. It was awful waste but it never bothered her. All while paying me £10 an hour.

AdultChildQuestion · 04/10/2024 21:43

Feeling cold so whacking the heating up, rather than putting more clothes on.

Lots of peoples world £400 is cheap for a watch. It’s certainly not an expensive watch! Not one you’d bother putting on your house insurance 😂😂😂😂😂😂

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 04/10/2024 21:44

Just being able to replace the washing machine when it dies, or other white goods without stress and worry about where that money is coming from.

LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole · 04/10/2024 21:44

Does she let the venue know she isn’t coming so the ticket will become available ?

Evo20 · 04/10/2024 21:46

Name change for this but…what you experience from proximity to wealth beyond what you can pay for.

You think those friends with flash lifestyles are paying for it? Probably not.

I probably look like I spend ££££ a year on holidays. But I stay at one relatives Greek villa for a week, another family member asks if we’d fancy joining them in the chalet over New Year, I heard you were going to be in Ibiza would you like to use the boat. Let’s do a weekend in the country at mine etc etc.

It’s a ludicrous luxury and I don’t think most people in that situation really clock what an unbelievable privilege it is because they know no different.

FussyFusspott · 04/10/2024 21:46

@Barbadossunset you're implying she had some kind of moral obligation to do so - she isn't missing an NHS appointment.

Aspecialplaceinhell · 04/10/2024 21:47

£400 isn't 'cheap' for a watch it's definitely a considered purchase but definitely isn't an investment purchase more of a nice to wear peice.

Hmmmmnotconvinced · 04/10/2024 21:48

DH & I both full time professional wage but being able to regularly visit family, go on dates or socialise is off the table for us.
I had a bit of inheritance for a year and it was so lovely being able to visit family without worrying about fuel, accommodation, meals out etc.
Holidays are out of the question.
I miss that and wealthy people take that for granted.
