The casual things that wealthy people take for granted

Inspired by a thread that’s gone totally off topic….where someone suggested a £400 watch was cheap.

What’s the most casual (even accidental) brag you’ve ever heard a wealthy person say?

I can start as I know someone who celebrated a big birthday recently and is an absolutely lovely person but during their party (in the wonderful house) they said “oh! Here comes the string quartet. I had completely forgotten about them!”

When I was trying to buy my first flat, my boss thought it was inexplicable that I was looking in SE London not west London.
Nowadays I think it's not worrying- most things that go wrong can be helped with money thrown at them. Wealthy people don't sweat the small stuff

I’m sorry £400 for watch its cheap. I cant afford rolex for watch but i got £1k-£2k watches. I’m not rich but comfortable and i bought £200 bra for one bra. I think the bra its expensive, because its just a bra.

my aunt its very wealthy, she married a middle east oil businessman and now live in mayfair. She casually ask me about my boys school “why dont you put them in private school? Its not expensive. You dont want to put them in state school, do you?”

Name change for this but…what you experience from proximity to wealth beyond what you can pay for.

You think those friends with flash lifestyles are paying for it? Probably not.

I probably look like I spend ££££ a year on holidays. But I stay at one relatives Greek villa for a week, another family member asks if we’d fancy joining them in the chalet over New Year, I heard you were going to be in Ibiza would you like to use the boat. Let’s do a weekend in the country at mine etc etc.

It’s a ludicrous luxury and I don’t think most people in that situation really clock what an unbelievable privilege it is because they know no different.

Edited

I agree with this. I was just saying to a pregnant friend that we were really lucky not having to spend money on all the newborn essentials as friend and family really gave us so much in gifts and hand me downs... and then it clicked how much of a privilege that is and not everyone has the support network.

justasking111 · 04/10/2024 22:08

I paid £300 for a watch 35 years ago. Still wear it sometimes. Good things are more durable.

My son when single had a thing about watches, would pay around 4k. They have appreciated.

A girl friend received a beautiful Rolex on her birthday. She's had it for ten years or more. Think it was well over £20k at the time.

My idea of wealthy would be taking all my family on holiday in a private jet. Four generations and no airport hassle.

If you think £400 is an expensive watch I’d love to know what you think a £40,000 watch is??
Surely people are aware of the price scale of things available to buy.

eg say you think a £400 car is expensive? Are you unaware that Lamborghinis exist?

also it would be pointless putting a £400 watch on your house insurance as it would probably end up costing you more insurance than simply replacing the watch. So not cost effective…

A £40,000 watch is stupid.

FavouriteTshirt · 04/10/2024 22:09

Knowing that if you don't work terribly hard at school that mum and dad will sort you out somehow

Having your exact choice of uni course because you'll fit in there and don't have to worry about travelling, rent, student loans or working and studying at the same time

Taking your time going travelling because you don't need to get straight to work

Doing charity work / internships because you can afford to work for no pay

Living virtuous, green, sustainable lives because you can afford to

Following an unusual diet and spending lots of time on your health and wellbeing

Overpaying your mortgage

Redecorating / restyling your home regularly

Replacing things before they're worn out

RJnomore1 · 04/10/2024 22:09

A thread on here about London muggings. Someone says look I walk round London every day in an £8k watch and I’ve never had hassle.

Up pops someone else to tell them well that’s because noones interested in your £8k watch, it’s only worth robbing if it’s £100kish.

I mean it may be true I don’t know but it was phrased in a “you poor povvo think that’s an expensive watch” fashion.

TickingAlongNicely · 04/10/2024 22:09

A cheap watch us a tenner.
A 400 pound watch is low end luxury, but not cheap.

Just being able to replace the washing machine when it dies, or other white goods without stress and worry about where that money is coming from.

This is the first answer that really meets the brief. This is me but I do appreciate how lucky I am having grown up in a home that was no where close to that position.

A friend of a friend talking in passing about how he was thinking of buying an island.

owning an island not as glamorous as it sounds.

reesewithoutaspoon · 04/10/2024 22:11

I think what they take for granted is the ability to solve most problems with money.
Missed your flight. No worries just book another.
never worrying about bills.
Feeling a bit under the weather, just book a holiday.
Roof leaking. No worries get someone to fix it.
Its that freedom from worrying about how to deal with unexpected stuff. It happens on MN to a degree. Someone says they feel a bit down and are told to book a night away in a hotel and take a spa retreat. Thats hundreds of pounds that most people cant just don't have spare lying around. A lot of people are thrown into financial difficulty if their kids ruin their shoes or lose a blazer.

I had a colleague whose partner had a very well paid job. They spent a fortnight cruising the Caribbean on their friend’s yacht, while I was doing a coach tour round Greece 🤣

My in laws moaned about the food being too rich and there being too much wine on their recent week long vineyard tour of Bordeaux. (£3k per person). They said they found all the eating and drinking draining and tiresome.

To be honest I actually know what they mean 🙈 We went on a 3 days vineyard tour in the champagne region and who knew there is actually a thing of too much champagne 🤣

Missing the point, but which bra is £200?

Rigby and Peller ones are far cheaper!

Just had a look and 765 out of 789 watches in the Argos catalogue cost less than £400. Just because £400 is cheap to you, it’s clearly expensive to the majority of people less wealthy than you.

BTW, Argos is a catalogue shop that the less wealthy like to frequent.

This is so true. You also need so much less money when the children are independent adults and married.

That outfit, watch, bag, jewellery, you lusted after, you wonder why now.

Im not particularly wealthy but a £400 watch IS cheap.

An expensive watch is well into the thousands (£3k+). £400 is probably just a metal/plastic watch.

Next thing I’m going to hear is that £50 is an expensive hand bag 😂😂😂

Edited

You're clearly wealthier than you think because I don't think I've ever spent £50 for a handbag and £400 for a watch is my mortgage payment.

RJnomore1 · 04/10/2024 22:15

Jeez. In a country where so many children are in poverty, people can’t turn the heating on and food banks are prevalent can you just think before you call a £400 watch cheap?

Theres nothing wrong with expensive items but at least take the bloody time to understand where they fit into society.

£400 for a watch or 4 x going out for a dinner for 2. That's what it comes down to. I think the watch is going to last longer and the dinner is probably not going to be great.

Omg love that you quoted Argos. Like you implied, Argos isn’t the favoured merchant of wealthy people so I sadly feel you’ve shot yourself in the face with this example.

Surely wealthy people are shopping at Harrods not Argos?

Vulgar is what a £40,000 watch is.

Choosingbetweenthousandsofmediocresandwiches · 04/10/2024 22:16

Sorry, but a couple of dicks in this thread…no concept of normal life or the fact that just because it’s nothing to them, it’s a lot to other people.
I know a lot of people who would think £400 spent on a watch was a lot and and a real treat purchase. Even if you have money or are fairly comfortable, surely you’re aware of others positions, I feel sad for you if you’re not. Also, don’t forget, anyone can fall from grace and lose it all easily.

I’m so poor I don’t even wear a watch! :)
