Jumpers How Much Would You Pay?

DBD1975 · 04/10/2024 13:30

Hello Lovely Mumsnetters

Really interested to know what is the most you would pay for a jumper and what is your 'go to' favourite place to shop for jumpers?

For years I have been going to H&M, M&S and Next, buying jumpers which are OK and around the £40 price range.

Starting to think now buy less, spend more and get something I really like rather than thinking what I am buying is OK.

Would really appreciate your views/guidance as not sure best places to look or how much to budget.

Many thanks for your guidance.

Think the most I would pay for a jumper would be around the £40 mark to be honest

Netcam · 08/11/2024 22:19

About £100. But I only buy 100% wool.

Beebumble2 · 08/11/2024 22:25

It depends on what they are made of. Natural materials will cost more, cashmere, merino wool, Alpaca and pure wool will cost more.
On line shops such as Woolovers have ranges of natural fibre jumpers, as do M&S. costing anything between £60 to £120. Fat Face and White Stuff also have good jumpers, often a mix of natural fibres and man made.
Good quality natural fibre jumpers, with care, last years.

grizzlygrump · 08/11/2024 22:26

£300? If something I really like made by people who care. I like babaa, jaggery London, navygrey. High street and much cheaper Toast, J Crew.

Toastthemosttoo · 08/11/2024 22:29

About £300 - would have to be soft wool, probably cashmere or merino - anything else gives me the itch.

Netcam · 08/11/2024 22:54

I wouldn't pay £300, maybe £150 for something special, but generally pay £90 to £100. I tend to buy quality in the sale. I have nice jumpers from Celtic and Co, Croft House, Dilling, Icebreaker, MamaOwl.

Anicecumberlandsausage · 08/11/2024 22:55

Maximum £50. I get mine from Very.

Polyp0 · 08/11/2024 22:56

About £300.

doodleschnoodle · 08/11/2024 23:08

£60-70. I've got a few around this range from Sugarhill Brighton and they wash really well and are good quality. I wouldn't want to go much higher as I can be a bit careless, plus I don't want to have to wash stuff specially and I want to tumble dry them (heat pump so pretty gentle on clothes. I can use it on all my current jumpers). For hoodies and stuff, I have a few White Fox hoodies that are around £55 I think.

Supersimkin7 · 08/11/2024 23:15

I can’t do polyester either.

Yikes to £300. Uniqlo do excellent merino jerseys for £30.00.

For a piece that lasts 20 years, I go for horrifically pricy proper cashmere in the sale - Johnstons, N Peal etc.. Bulletproof and cheering every winter you dig it out.

BeetledBrow · 08/11/2024 23:31

I don’t have any specific limit - I like a bargain but if there’s something I’m madly in love with and can see the point of in my wardrobe, I’ll buy it if I feel it’s worth the money to me.

Some places I’ve bought knitwear in the last few years include:

Co Collective
Community Clothing
Cos
La Fetiche
Loulou Studio
Marni
Studio Nicholson
The Elder Statesman
Toogood

Not an exhaustive list. Some on sale, some full price. Some of those things I’ve owned for years and reach for habitually, others are worn less but fussed over and taken out of drawers to be stroked and gazed upon - definitely worth every penny either way.

Abbaa · 08/11/2024 23:32

How do you wash and dry wool/cashmere? This is what puts me off buying them Confused

Hayley1256 · 08/11/2024 23:36

I've got some really nice ones from mint velvet, prices ranges from 90-120. I don't think I'd pay more than this unless I was in love with a jumper

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 08/11/2024 23:37

About £300, for handmade jumpers made with local wool

RogueFemale · 08/11/2024 23:47

£100-150, nearly always buy Toast jumpers 2nd hand on ebay. Good quality, cosy, just watch out for itchy wool (e.g. the Donegal ones are itchy). Big bonus is that darning repairs are free at Toast, as I always get elbow holes in jumpers.

On the washing machine on wool setting with wool detergent. Dry flat on an airer. Wash as little as possible though.

Yup, I also wash jumpers like this, never had a problem.

LoafofSellotape · 09/11/2024 00:02

I always buy a mix though as anything 100% gets attacked by moths!

Blarn · 09/11/2024 00:06

I get the lambswool ones from Community clothing for around the £60 mark but really like the look of their cable knit and cardigans which are closer to £100 so would be happy to pay that. I can see that with the right care they will last a long time so happy to pay it.

Meadowfinch · 09/11/2024 00:12

The most I've spent is £140 from Celtic & Co. Now 4 years old, still looks like new.

I hand wash anything wool, spin dry, then roll in a towel, and dry flat in the airing cupboard.

purpleme12 · 09/11/2024 00:14

I'd have trouble spending more than £40 on a jumper

And I've got jumpers years old so I'm quite happy with how long they last

I have been really tempted by some clothes from this company I'll admit when it's come up on my Facebook

purpleme12 · 09/11/2024 00:17

@doodleschnoodle what is the sizing like on Sugarhill Brighton? To be expected?

I hate buying online and avoid it if possible so it's risky to me!

BeatriceAndLottie · 09/11/2024 00:18

My jumpers cost between £200 and £20! 🤣 I’m willing to pay quite a lot for the right jumper (ie: design that I 100% love, well made, good quality materials etc) as I keep somewhat of a capsule wardrobe and don’t often buy new clothes.

Tu @ Sainsbury’s often have some wonderful knitwear gems. Other than that I tend to frequent Ralph Lauren, Mint Velvet, Cos + & Other Stories

Vinted is absolutely amazing for this sort of thing. I never buy new designer clothes anymore after discovering it. Just bought a practically new Ralph Lauren jumper for £40!

I treat my expensive cashmere jumpers very carefully and use an old fashioned way of washing, as used by my Scottish granny. Wash by hand in warm water, gently squeeze, do not rub or wring. Rinse in warm water, squeeze out water, lay the jumper on a bath towel and roll up like a Swiss roll to take out excess moisture. Then dry flat.
I know it’s a faff, but my cashmere jumpers have lasted years and I’ve built up a good collection. Under no circumstances use fabric softener, it matts the fibres.
Moths are a big problem so every summer I put the jumpers in airtight bags with a moth killer strip.
