managed to get a doctors appointment this morning for a bad chest infection and picked up my prescription at 2pm. Hadn't had thjs antibiotic before and read the leaflet which said to take
with water and to stay upright afterwards for at least half an julie. Which I've done. And had it with a sandwich too.
Made the mistake of checking mumsnet old threads and quite a few people complaining of severe vomiting with it. I took the first dose at half two and feel ok, but really anxious that I might be sick now. I'm fine with amoxycyllin so not sure why they've not prescribed that one. Shit. And I was going to try to go into work tomorrow but perhaps not.
Anyone been ok with this antibiotic?

Do you have emetophobia OP

whydoesitalwayshappentome · 03/10/2024 15:14

I have had it several times and never been sick. Hopefully you won't be either.

You probably shouldn't be in work anyway with a bad chest infection tbh.

mynameiscalypso · 03/10/2024 15:15

The number of people who complain about it on MN is probably a very very small proportion of the number of people who take it without issue

no, I don't. It's funny you should ask this as my daughter has emetophobia (and ocd and is autistic) and I've never been afraid of throwing up, but in recent years I think her phobia is starting to rub off on me too!

Yes, it's one of only a couple I can tolerate. You did the right things. Just keep on taking them like that and hopefully you'll be OK (they do make me feel queasy, but not too bad, nothing like the side effects I've had from other antibiotics) Get well soon!

HappyHolidai · 03/10/2024 15:18

It makes me nauseous on an empty stomach but taken after food, no problem.

Imposter1212 · 03/10/2024 15:18

I have a severe allergy to penicillin so always get doxycyline.

I'm OK on it as long as I don't take it on an empty stomach (I didn't eat the first time I took it and I didn't vomit but felt sick).

The staying upright is because it can dissolve and cause irritation to the throat I believe. I think there is also guidance about not taking gaviscon etc for 2 hours before and after because gaviscon can interfere with absorption of the antibiotic. Which was fun since I suffer from reflux sometimes.

Do not get your nails done as your more sensitive tk the sun

HoppingPavlova · 03/10/2024 15:28

Some of my kids had it long term for acne when younger. Basically you have to fail this before being considered for Roaccutane. None of them ever had an issue. I told them to take with food and stay upright for an hour. Was all good.

WandaFishy99 · 03/10/2024 15:29

Don't forget, nobody will ever start a thread saying they feel fine on doxycycline!

YorkshireIndie · 03/10/2024 15:46

I always throw up when I take the first dose (two tablets) but fine for the rest of the course

Bohomovies · 03/10/2024 15:48

I’m allergic to it but i wasn’t sick with it. I got blisters all over my skin when I took it.

onionbhajiplease · 03/10/2024 15:48

thanks all. Well it's been an hour since I took first dose and I'm still ok, so hopefully that's a good sign?!!

and still ok now. So hopefully when people do a search for this antibiotic on here in future, they'll also see this positive thread!

I had it last year for pneumonia & thought I was more likely to die from it than the pneumonia. I was struggling to eat because of a sore mouth & throat, all I could manage was ice cream & the stomach pains & nausea were horrible. I ended up taking omeprazole with every tablet & eating little & often, that was the only thing that helped.

katscamel · 03/10/2024 21:04

Never had any problems with Doxy and took it over a very long period of time as an anti malarial several years ago. Have to take it now for a different condition and don't have any problems

Sallysoup · 03/10/2024 21:07

Maybe stay upright for a full Julie and see if that helps

WetBandits · 03/10/2024 21:11

I issue doxycycline on a daily basis (for chlamydia though!)

My standard advice is to take with food (a decent meal, not just a snack) and a large glass of water, definitely don’t lie down for at least an hour after taking, avoid sun exposure, including sunbeds.

It’s not the most fun antibiotic to take, and does have some rough side effects, but do persevere with it if you can!

Whine0Clock · 03/10/2024 21:11

When I was prescribed it several years ago as an antimalarial, the doctor forgot to tell me about the importance of taking it in the morning, standing up, with food. So instead I took it in the evenings, lying down, just before going to sleep. I ended up with a horribly ulcerated oesophagus and couldn’t eat anything for two weeks. The pain was horrific. But no sickness or other side effects. But that is why it is important to take it in the morning with food when you are upright and active..

Theunamedcat · 03/10/2024 21:12

Made me nauseous at first but it eased off after the first day and never take it on an empty stomach

I have been prescribed this a few times for pneumonia and have been sick on it a couple of times. I always follow instructions and can't see any reason why I'm sick compared to when I didn't. Get regular nausea though but it is a strong antibiotic and does work.
