managed to get a doctors appointment this morning for a bad chest infection and picked up my prescription at 2pm. Hadn't had thjs antibiotic before and read the leaflet which said to take
with water and to stay upright afterwards for at least half an julie. Which I've done. And had it with a sandwich too.
Made the mistake of checking mumsnet old threads and quite a few people complaining of severe vomiting with it. I took the first dose at half two and feel ok, but really anxious that I might be sick now. I'm fine with amoxycyllin so not sure why they've not prescribed that one. Shit. And I was going to try to go into work tomorrow but perhaps not.
Anyone been ok with this antibiotic?

I have just had to take it for two weeks with metronizadol. Excuse the spelling. I can honestly say I thought I was going nuts. I have a real fear of vomiting so it’s not a regime I would like to repeat.
At one point I had to go to the doctor as I was being sick and couldn’t keep anything down.
Doctor told me to eat with it as it’s important to keep whatever you can in your system. Eat light, easy to digest foods. Drink plenty of water. Obviously, you know about not lying down.
One tip also got was to wrap the capsule in a piece of bread, flattened a bit so it could be swallowed. Wasn’t sick again after that.
A lot of people have no issues but this drug does seem to upset a lot of systems.
But it’s very effective and I really needed it.
I hope you feel better and recover soon.

Im pretty sure I took this for 6 weeks as an antimalaria and I no side effects except for sensitive to sunburn. If I’m not getting my drugs mixed up it used to be dead common as an anti malarial and whilst some people don’t get on with it the vast majority do and some take it for months on end.

I’ve had it so many times and never, ever been sick on it. I’ve got complex health issues and am in numerous health groups and doxy is often talked about but mostly the whole acid / oesophageal irritation thing by people who didn’t read the leaflet about staying upright.

mamaison · 03/10/2024 21:31

I once had the vomiting issue after taking the first dose a snack. The vomiting was so bad I didn’t continue.

A few years after that I took it with a medication to stop vomiting. I did have nausea but never vomited.

In my experience I was vomiting from the first dose.

DO BE CAREFUL about taking the full glass of water and keeping upright! My word, I had the most painful burn in my oesophagus after taking one just before bed.

JacquiDaytona · 03/10/2024 21:35

It made my husband SO sick! Me, absolutely no side effects. Both had it as an anti malarial.

saraclara · 03/10/2024 21:47

I've taken it many times as an antimalarial. I always take it with my breakfast and have never had any issues

Skigal86 · 03/10/2024 21:53

Took it for 2 months as an anti malarial, no massive issues but I had to take with food otherwise it made me queasy. And it led to horrendous sunburn on my hands and feet, but probably less of a concern in October, assuming you’re in the UK.

AngelinaFibres · 03/10/2024 21:56

It made me feel very sick. I took it at night so I could sleep through the side effect. It worked very well in getting rid of my chest infection.

RedRosie · 03/10/2024 21:59

Yes. I had to take it for three months for a dental issue... And was totally fine. I guess they have to cover the totality of side-effects, but many people will be fine if they follow directions.

Doubledded123 · 03/10/2024 22:00

Taken this along for chest infection
The prednisolone was far worse.....

yellowbananasorangemelons · 03/10/2024 22:06

I also had it as an antimalarial. I don't remember being told to stay upright, but did know that it could not be take on an empty stomach. I remember one occasion I swallowed it down without thinking then as soon I'd done it thought "oh shit!" Sure enough, a short while later I was throwing up on a Costa Rican beach whilst trying to watch turtles lay eggs!

Taken after eating / with food? Absolutely fine.

I’m allergic to it but i wasn’t sick with it. I got blisters all over my skin when I took it.

Snap! My face blistered. It’s not, as far as I recall, on the leaflet.

I sent photos to my (adult) children, they were pretty shocked!

TheChosenTwo · 03/10/2024 22:23

I was prescribed it as an antimalarial, didn’t realise it would make me sick a few times. I was also taking the contraceptive pill. I ended up falling very unhappily pregnant! Word of warning!!

flamingoshoes · 03/10/2024 22:31

Yep I'm a vomitter on it, tried a few times and projectile vomiting within 30 mins of taking it. Ask for something alternative now.

ADogChewingAnAntler · 03/10/2024 22:36

My teenage DD had to take it for 3 weeks last year. She was absolutely fine, no side effects at all. Just make sure you don't take it on an empty stomach; take it with a full glass of water and stay upright afterwards. Oh and if we get any sunshine, stay out of that too!

TLMTTCSJTT1 · 03/10/2024 22:39

Had this in droves in January for an infection, was never sick :) I also googled second that nobody ever goes online to report a good experience remember that!

julesagain · 03/10/2024 22:39

It's my go-to antibiotic now as amoxicillin no longer works due to thirteen years of immunosuppressants. So far, I've had no issues although I fet hideous photosensitivity, so it xan ge tricky for summer infections. It does work well though

onionbhajiplease · 03/10/2024 15:48

thanks all. Well it's been an hour since I took first dose and I'm still ok, so hopefully that's a good sign?!!

How did u get on I need to start tomorrow I'm severely emetaphobic so I'm panicking

Flopsythebunny · 14/10/2024 02:49

I've been on this for coming up to 2 years now for pan sinusitis that's resistant to co amaxiclav and FESS surgery didn't work. I've found that taking it mid morning with a 250ml glass of milk works best for me. It's best to keep out of the sun, even in winter. I was out recently for about 15 minutes on a cloudy day and all my exposed skin went bright red. My face is still sore.
