English breakfasts-what is appealing about them.

Not judging! I do like them occasionally myself (especially if eating out, almost got one the other day but I'm vegan so slightly different) just pondering what exactly it is that makes so many people love them so much?
They even have their own subreddit. Is it the mixture of carbs/protein/sloppy things (beans/tomatoes)?
Is it (as a friend of mine says!) That they're the only thing that 'cures' a hangover?
Tradition?
Just curious. I can see the appeal with some other commonly eaten meals but can't put my finger on this one Smile?

Carbs, meat and fat.

Heaven

🤤

The combination of salty meats, buttered toast, smooth eggs, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms just create a sense of absolute bliss that I, personally, cannot get from any other meal. A full English with a cup of strong tea is, in my opinion, the only real cure for a hangover - it just... Soaks the previous night up, like mopping up your bean juice with a slice of toast. There's nothing even remotely more satisfying after a big night out, and I've lived/worked in quite a few places round the world!

Well they're just yummy

It's as simple as that

I think that aren’t something that most people tend to have very frequently which makes them more enjoyable when they do.

nootcoffee · 03/10/2024 15:12

When you have “occasionally” had one and enjoyed it OP…. why have you enjoyed it?

Ineedwinenow · 03/10/2024 15:13

Food of the gods! End of discussion 😉

Bestfootfwd · 03/10/2024 15:14

They’re an occasional treat and still an enjoyable meal even if you cut out the carbs (which I try to do.) Most breakfasts are very carb heavy.

Sethera · 03/10/2024 15:15

Overrated, or at least, the anticipation is usually better than the reality in my experience.

The best breakfasts I ever had were cold meats and cheeses in Germany.

ThisHangryPinkBalonz · 03/10/2024 15:16

Fried bread, mushrooms cooked in butter with black pepper and a hint of garlic, meaty sausages from the butchers, thick cut smoked bacon, baked beans, black pudding.... what's not to like? Other then if you are vegan/veggie. (The alternatives just aren't the same - so maybe why you don't get it).

Just yum for a treat- something comforting about it.

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/10/2024 15:17

Bacon ….

My mouth is watering now. I love a full English and it keeps you full until the evening meal so great on holidays when you are out and about all day.

overindulged · 03/10/2024 15:19

I think it's the variety of tastes and textures on the plate - I love a roast dinner for the same reason. Salty, sweet, chewy, creamy, crunchy etc.

If you think about lots of other meals, like a curry with rice, or a pasta dish - each mouthful is the same.

I now want a full English for dinner.

EerilyDecorated · 03/10/2024 15:20

Bacon, egg, sausage, black pudding, mushrooms, fried bread or potato scone, heaven. No to beans though, they ruin it.

Oops, I forgot the dippy fried eggs 😂.. I think im going to have one for brunch tomorrow.

Yes, definitely a meal to keep you going all day.

yeesh · 03/10/2024 15:22

What would be on a vegan ‘English’ breakfast anyway? Most of the things other people enjoy you wouldn’t as you don’t eat meat. Very odd question tbh

Kokomjolk · 03/10/2024 15:23

Well I don't think a vegan version would be all that either, OP, so I don't blame you for not 'getting it'.

It really needs the eggs, meat, animal fat and butter.

Admittedly usually because I've been hungover 🤣and/or because It's different. I work out a lot and usually low-carb so it is a treat. But I don't know if that's the general appeal.

The one I had last time in a restaurant/pub was vegan bacon, vegan sausages, smashed avocado, mushrooms, tomatoes, fried bread, toast and baked beans. From memory, might have been more to it but unsure.

I'm not keen on a full English as it's always too much food. I don't like black pudding, tomatoes or bacon. I love a sausage and egg mcmuffin though.

I agree with that. One of my pet hates is that much of the time vegan menu offerings are rissoto or chilli which yes, every mouthful the same. Boring, and something I might make at home if I was skint or couldn't be bothered to go to the shops!

I like them because you stay full for longer than a carby breakfast. Bacon, eggs, sausage, mushrooms and tomatoes are my go to on holiday. Fills you up til dinner... unlike a bowl of cereal with milk/yoghurt/berries where you get hangry mid afternoon.

kab89 · 03/10/2024 15:38

Black pudding and bubble are a must have for me. I haven't been able to eat eggs for a few years now and I really miss them on a full English.

Drinkdrinkduuurink · 03/10/2024 15:40

You have to have the Ulster Fry as it has potato bread.

I couldn't eat a full breakfast without it. Potato bread is the base of the meal.

It's the slices under the eggs and sausages (not the bottom one as that's soda farls, which are lovely too but too much for me).

If you grill everything, poach the eggs and cut out the bread they are high protein and low ish fat and carbs. Very filling too.

Beekeepingmum · 03/10/2024 15:42

Other than the hashbrowns presumably a vegan English breakfast is just the beans, tomatoes and mushrooms, i.e. the filler bits. Not even even butter on the toast....
