English breakfasts-what is appealing about them.

Not judging! I do like them occasionally myself (especially if eating out, almost got one the other day but I'm vegan so slightly different) just pondering what exactly it is that makes so many people love them so much?
They even have their own subreddit. Is it the mixture of carbs/protein/sloppy things (beans/tomatoes)?
Is it (as a friend of mine says!) That they're the only thing that 'cures' a hangover?
Tradition?
Just curious. I can see the appeal with some other commonly eaten meals but can't put my finger on this one Smile?

@PeatrixBotter it's 2 tins white beans, drained, 1 chopped onion, 4 cloves chopped or grated garlic, 1tbsp whole grain mustard, 125g tomato paste or purée, 500ml chicken or vegetable stock & some fresh thyme. Fry onion & garlic until soft, add other ingredients & stir. Heat until boiling then simmer for around 25minutes, or until desired consistency.

I have no idea, but I don’t like them. I’ve given up trying. It’s similar with fish and chips or a roast. I just don’t really get it.

I could live off sushi or pad thai or Korean BBQ or various Indian street foods for life. But a full English or fish and chips. Blah.

Individually, all the components of a fried breaky are delicious.

  • Fried eggs 😋
  • Rich tomatoey baked beans
  • Gorgeous salty buttered toast
  • Fried tomato - heaven
  • Bacon - need I say more

The wetherspoons english breakfast is unrivalled with a cup of tea, just perfection

I've never eaten an overnight oat nor would I. Not even fully sure what that consists of but I don't have a sweet tooth at all.

A vegan who doesn’t eat oats

and doesn’t like the traditional veg involved in a roast

can’t be many of you around Op!

I order a big one of those a few months ago. It was massive- and delicious. 😋

I do like a full English and agree that they’re a great hangover cure but I’m more likely to go for Eggs Benedict or avocado on toast with poached eggs because it’s something I wouldn’t bother making at home so feels like a real treat.

My favourite breakfasts are European style though (Spanish/French/German). I’m all about the bread, cheese, cold meats and excellent fresh tomatoes. Ideally a few cornichons too (I don’t really know if any Europeans have cornichons with their breakfasts but it does seem like the sort of thing they’d do, and any time is an appropriate time for cornichons). This is the sort of thing I eat for breakfast when we’re camping in Europe (and then usually the same again for lunch).

In Norway, I really enjoyed pålegg for breakfast, which is the same sort of thing again- bread or crispbread open sandwiches with cheese/meat toppings- the difference being the Norwegians are big on fish so there’s usually some salmon or fish paste of some sort, which I’m less keen on, especially at breakfast time, but love the cream cheeses and meats etc.

Roasts can be tricky if it isn't a season for lots of faux meat roast type things in shops.

But for roasts, I personally dislike all of the components, meat and non-meat!I don't like soggy cabbage or roast potatoes etc

How about cabbage that has been cooked properly, and still has some bite to it, @PeatrixBotter? I think soggy cabbage sounds grim too, but the way I cook it, it’s lovely, I promise. I shred savoy cabbage, put it in the pan with a centimetre of water in the bottom, and ground nutmeg and a couple of teaspoons of butter on top. Steam the cabbage until the butter melts - it will be hot, but still nutty and crisp.

Wtfdude · 04/10/2024 15:39

Cabbage is one of the most underrated and mistreated veggies imho! So many people totally ruin it while it's actually quite easy to make it tasty

DeanElderberry · 04/10/2024 15:45

The last few times I cooked cabbage I shredded it and zapped it in the microwave for a couple of minutes with a bit of butter. Heaven, and no sog at all.

harriettenightingale · 04/10/2024 15:45

Yes that's how I do my cabbage too, except I fry it a little bit then add water to the pan @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius

nootcoffee · 04/10/2024 15:46

i just love steamed
and then a drizzle of soy sauce

bloody lovely

Hoppinggreen · 04/10/2024 15:48

Horrible unless done correctly with good quality ingredients, then they are wonderful (as long as you can ensure your egg dosn't touch the beans)

nocoolnamesleft · 04/10/2024 19:10

You don't like roast potatoes? What sort of cultural philistine are you?!

PeatrixBotter · 05/10/2024 14:42

Sunplanner · 03/10/2024 19:14

The meat-based full-English seems to be enjoyed by most people whatever the quality. I like either a vegan or vegetarian version, but the quality and variety has to go up a notch to be worthwhile.

Maybe a selection from scrambled eggs or scrambled tofu (vegan), poached eggs, good vegan bacon/sausages, roasted vine tomatoes, sliced gently cooked mushrooms - butter absolutely needed imo, home-made baked beans, grilled halloumi, avocado, fresh spinach, fried potatoes, bubble and squeak, potato cakes, soda farl, staffordshire oatcake, wholemeal toast. HP SAUCE!

It's a feast and should feel like one!

Abominations - hash brown, tinned tomatoes, hotel half tomatoes not grilled enough, whole mushrooms grilled without butter/oil - soggy and chewy!

Totally agreeing with you regarding tinned tomatoes. They're an (albeit useful) ingredient in my book, not something to consume on their own! I had a friend who'd eat them on toast. The whole ones. Bleurgh.

Why on earth would you think that, have you not been in a supermarket in the last 5 years? There are vegan alternatives for sausage, bacon, black pudding, haggis and Evan eggs readily available everywhere.

That response confused me so much! I mean, some people would perhaps like that as a snack, but I don't think anyone would or could call it an English breakfast!

I love a full English breakfast. I have one at least 3 times a week. 2 half fat sausages, bacon, 2 scrambled eggs a hash brown and spoon of baked beans.

I'd be the size of a small country if I did that I think! Unless it was perhaps all (or almost) I ate that day!

I do like baked beans on them I must admit, and baked beans are something I'd never eat usually. They bring back bad childhood memories of sloppy beans in loads of their liquid, and soggy egg and chips!

I like the thought of it. Unfortunately I don’t like any of the components. But I like that guy on insta off the apprentice who sits down to his full English and says "a bosh" and starts his day in an East end caff.
Seems like a great way to start the day ! I prefer a Turkish breakfast, if I fancy a morning indulgence.

When I was in Turkey, my breakfast consisted of cucumber, black olives and strong black coffee! A while ago admittedly. No wonder I was thin!

@PeatrixBotter

I'm mainly intrigued as to how you manage to eat "usually low carb" as a vegan. I'm a vegetarian and I struggle on a low carb diet and can eat real cheese, dairy and eggs. The vegans I know eat loads of carbs. What's a typical meal for you?

It isn't easy-and can be very boring.

It's not possible to go AS low carb as someone omnivorous.

My go-to meals are;

Salad with either a faux-meat or tofu component, seeds, avocado, olives, olive oil or vegan mayo as dressing

Low-carb wraps with a variation of the above inserted, or vegan sausages and fried red onions, bit of salad

Celariac chips make a good side-dish as does coleslaw made without carrot.

Popadums (5carbs each) dipped into guac or salsa make a good snack.

A version of this;
https://cookieandkate.com/west-african-peanut-soup/

Spaghetti bolognese made with vegan mince and Shirataki noodles

Vegetable curries with shirataki rice.

I think there are some others but that's what springs to mind for now.

I do have some days off-I'd get VERY bored otherwise.

Vegetarian Peanut Soup

This West African peanut soup recipe is made with pantry staples and collard greens. It's a creamy, spicy vegan soup that's easy to make on busy weeknights.

I used haricot beans, I can't remember how I made the sauce. I will give your recipe a turn!

I wouldn't turn my nose up at them if I was around someone's house for dinner, but by choice-give me mash, chips or wedges over them any day! I find them very bland.

I must be a freak!

I don't like cabbage, mushy carrots, sprouts... parsnips are too sweet for me and green beans are gross too. Cauliflower can also go in the bin-I don't mind broccoli however. As long as it has enough salt on it to give me a coronary.

Oats-I don't know. I don't have a sweet tooth. I don't really do breakfast as in something you eat as soon as you're up and about which I think is their main purpose in modern life. I used to eat them as a child sometimes.

I can have a full English without actually needing to eat the rest of the day. Haven't had one for ages though, when I do them at home I just can't get them right so it's a rare treat to go out for them.

I tend to do poached eggs and bacon on toast at home now and again.

I would probably need lunch and dinner after an English breakfast. 😂 I am always hungry.
