Driving commute- podcasts?

Hello all.

I'm about to start a new job with a 40 min commute each way, I don't love driving so I'm a bit wary about it. But the job is fantastic so worth it.

Thinking I should get into podcasts to make the journey better. Can you concentrate on driving (it's all windy back roads, which is worse for me) while listening?

Any recommendations for anything gripping would be great.

Thank you!

What sort of podcasts do you think you'd like?
Comedy, Self improvement, horror, news??

I really enjoy mel Robbins and Rangan Chatterjee they're more self and health improvement but they do have some interesting guests on!

CliveNextDoor · 03/10/2024 15:03

That would have been useful of me to say, wouldn't it @swedex excellent point!

I like comedy, autobiographies, true crime, fashion, history etc

Come to think of it I do like an audiobook on a dog walk so it's now occurring to me I could just listen to an audiobook too. Currently listening to Miriam Margoyle's book and it's so funny.

I wasn't clear- I do like driving generally just not on windy back roads, but there's no other way to get there, as I live in the ends of nowhere (Scotland).

On my train journey I like Annie Mac’s podcast - Changes, Ferne Cotton - Happy Place, Amanda Wakeley - Style DNA, the Run through with Vogue - if you like high fashion.
I do from time to time listen to business podcasts too but have to be in the right
mood for that!

I love Kathy Burkes - Where there's a will, there's a wake. Celebrity fantasy deaths, very funny, very sweary!

FrenchandSaunders · 03/10/2024 16:45

Wolf and Owl - Romesh Ranganathan and Tom Davis talking bollocks but very funny.

Parenting Hell - Rob Beckett and Josh Widdecombe, don't be put off by the title, it's not all about kids.

Where there's a will there's a way - Kathy Burke talking to celebs about their ideal funeral.

Memory Lane - Kerry Godliman and Jen Brister talking to celebs about photos they've sent in.

Dish - Nick Grimshaw and Angela Harkness - cooking for celebs and chatting

Therapy Crouch - Peter Crouch and Abby Clancy.

JaneIves · 03/10/2024 16:46

Oh and Table Manners - Jessie Ware and her mum and celeb guests.

I do a LOT of driving and commuting...For recurring podcasts, I like:
The News Agents
Blocked & Reported
Search Engine
Sherlock & Co
Waterlands
Real Dictators
Cautionary Tales with Tim Harford
Any of the Radio 4 shows that have been turned into podcasts eg. Desert Island Discs, In our time, the reunion, BBC inside science, sliced bread, the life scientific

And then there are lots I really have enjoyed that are super gripping, often true crime, where either each episode or a single season is a story like:
Uncanny
The Teacher's Pet
Bear Brook
The Lazarus Heist
Sweet Bobby
Dear Franklin Jones
Three Doors Down
Carrie Jade does not exist
#1 Dad
The Commune
Hysterical
Ghost Story
The Lady Vanishes (though you can skip quite a few of the episodes, they really spun it out after the first few episodes until the police made an arrest and then it got good again)
Scamanda
The Missing
Shandee's Story
The Missing Crypto Queen

@MNHQ why has my reply been hidden?? It was just a list of podcasts I thought the OP would enjoy...

Hopefully it will be un-hidden soon because from the looks of it, @Alwaystired2023 I think you and I enjoy the same kind of podcasts!

pangolinfan · 03/10/2024 17:16

I've just found Giles Brandreth's podcast Rosebud, interviewing interesting celebs about their memories (have listened to Stephen Fry, Chris McCausland and Maggie Smith/Kathleen Turner so far, and they've all been great). And unlike on some things he does, Giles does let them all speak!

pangolinfan · 03/10/2024 17:19

Gyles Brandreth I mean (though I don't supposed anyone was confused by my misspelling).

Uncanny

Toystory123 · 03/10/2024 18:04

Off Menu with James acaster and ed gamble. Easy listening, funny, interesting and lots of comedians as guests. Plenty of episodes already out there to explore

Alwaystired2023 · 03/10/2024 18:11

@Xiaoxiong in that case I want to see your list !!

ButterAsADip · 03/10/2024 18:13

I mainly survive on Handsome (Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster, Mae Martin), Katherine Ryan and Dear Hank and John - all comedy. How To Fail if you want something talky. Also Where There’s A Will There’s A Wake (Kathy Burke).

BrightLightTonight · 03/10/2024 18:14

Pre covid, I had a similar commute. Monday’s I listened to Archers Omnibus. The rest of the week I listened to my audible books.

8 miss that journey 😪

ButterAsADip · 03/10/2024 18:15

Also weirdly really like How To Gael even though I can only understand half of it, surprisingly easy to follow and feels like I’m in a nice bunch of pals.

….. and I’ve just realised that maybe their title is a nod to How To Fail 😁🤦🏻‍♀️

I always hear of The Archers. Is it something you could pick up, @BrightLightTonight having not listened from the start, I wonder?

Thank you everyone for these brilliant suggestions. I have made a list and will work my way through them. I am feeling a lot more positive now about the commute!
