Vinted - why would someone do this?

sarahbanshee · 03/10/2024 07:37

Just bought a skirt from Vinted, listed as 'very good' condition but when it arrived it was very badly stained and had a couple of small holes, not mentioned.

I raised a concern and without replying the seller accepted the complaint so I have a full refund.

Obviously that's great for me but I don't get why anyone would go to the trouble of packing up and sending off a rubbish item and then just accepting no money for it. What's the point?

I love how you felt the need to add that she binned it! I don’t think anyone would keep a bottle of spunk masquerading as hair treatment ..

Hepzibar · 04/10/2024 06:39

I've had a couple of items that were described as new without tags, both had that very distinctive charity shop smell.

The ones that are really creased and crumpled always amaze me. It's different standards I suppose

That was a reply to @HangDai

I know someone who bought Olaplex from Vinted and it turned out to be a bottle of spunk, she binned it.
Not overly surprised. My hairdresser said they've heard of this more than once.

So bizarre

MissyPants · 04/10/2024 07:43

I have had a good run in vinted, made £700 so far in a year, with no problem buyers. However if you join the vinted fb groups you will see all kinds of shit that sellers and buyers have to put up with.
Sellers selling stuff fit for the bin, buyers trying it on lying, saying parcel never arrived, received empty box etc. EBay is far more superior to vinted, both customer service wise (seller protection) & and the custom that they attract. Anything over £25 I list on eBay.
Some of the photos as well, clutter in the background, not bothering to crop photos, it all says something about the kind of people on there, you can tell by the state of some of the clothes they are trying to sell. It's a shame that sellers like this ruin the platform, as there are lots of genuine good sellers on there like me.
I'm not sure why sellers think they can get away with selling tacky stuff, as buyers can just request refund, just trying it on I suppose.
EBay have upped their game by matching vinted with free listings now as well. Vinted is ok for cheap stuff, but if you want to buy or sell anything of value I'd head over to eBay instead.

RachPelders · 04/10/2024 07:48

I often look for a certain item (white tshirts of various brands as ds likes white) and refine it to new with or new without tags. Because...well, it's white!

My main bugbear is the HUGE amount of listings under 'new without tags' with the description then saying 'only worn a couple of times' or similar.

In summary...people are stupid. That's my explanation for quite a lot in life.

Radiolala · 04/10/2024 07:57

Some sellers probably hope that you don’t open your parcel until after the cut off point to request a refund.

@HangDai how did she know?

doneandone · 04/10/2024 10:46

Yep, really pisses me off! Seller will usually then refund, you can't leave feedback then so it just continues. You should be able to leave feedback for sellers that do that because I would then avoid buying from them if I knew they did that.

Shizzlestix · 04/10/2024 17:47

Vinted seems to attract the younger sellers, looking at some wardrobe collections. I’ve sold pretty much my entire wardrobe and re-bought this year post gastric surgery so it’s been great for me, only a couple of misses eg a totally see through jumpsuit (not shown/mentioned) and a cardigan missing buttons and with holes, or bootleg trousers that wouldn’t go up my (still) fat legs (lymphodaema), obviously my own optimistic fault, they were fab. 😢

When I sell, I’m very thorough with descriptions, which helps sell according to the advice on there, but some descriptions are really shit/short, like literally ‘black trousers, 14’, which is usually obvious from the search criteria, thanks!

What really pisses me off is buyers not clicking the ‘Everything is ok’ button and letting the time run out to the default date when it becomes automatic. Check the blasted item (if you’re home, if you’re away, fair enough) and flipping press the button!

Can't stop laughing at this.

'Turned out to be jizz, she used it anyway and it gave her locks a lovely sheen.'

TumbledTussocks · 04/10/2024 23:25

There are chancers on both sides though. I sold some toddler shoes once - took photos of them and put them straight in a Jiffy bag to send. Said heavily used - bought second hand by me, but plenty of life in them only asked £2 - I just didn't want them to go in the bin, didn't think a charity shop would use shelf space for them.

The buyer was vile said they didn't look like anything like the picture and I'd tricked her.
I explained that wasn't possible but as an exception I'd refund her once she returned them. She went off about how stupid that was too. Honestly if she'd just said she didn't read the description or whatever I'd probably have just refunded her but the lies and angry threats were too much to give in to.

AuntieDolly · 04/10/2024 23:45

How many time would you need to ejaculate to fill a bottle with jizz?

tumtam · 04/10/2024 23:47

Either absent mindedness or I think they hope you won't notice until the refund window (I think is only 48hrs) has passed? I was away when a badly damaged item of kids clothes was delivered, by the time I opened the parcel the returns window was closed. Looking back at the photos the seller had clearly photographed it in a way that you wouldn't see the damaged and listed it 'very good condition'

When buying on Vinted I spend aaaaages reading sellers reviews in particular any that may hint at issues and their replies if any. Takes me days to make a decision Grin

Me too ! I love Vinted but I am super careful. I read reviews, I look at the kind of thinks the seller is selling, I pay careful attention to the descriptions. There are lots of things that put me off - e.g. “new - only worn once or twice” 🤔

TheM55 · 05/10/2024 00:40

I only buy new with tags or new without tags and have not been disappointed with anything so far, I have been delighted with some things, might have just been lucky. I mainly buy costume jewellery, but have bought a couple of dresses and tops and they have been great. I have bought knee high boots (new in box) and although they were lovely, and did fit me OK, I can see why someone would sell them - they are tight around the legs, I have got thin legs (shame about the fat body 😂) and they are fine, but for someone more in proportion I can see how they might struggle. Not sure what the answer is. When people are doing a spring clean, they should probably sort things into "it is OK to sell" and "it should be going to the charity shop" and even then another pile that says "it should be going to one of those collection points that it gets recycled".

This was my first thought too!

onemorerose · 05/10/2024 00:46

Maybe opalex is some sort of Vinted code word for bottle full of spunk😂 Did she ask for a refund?

Pinenuts91 · 05/10/2024 02:19

I get so nervous selling on vinted, I know everyone has different perspectives and expectations.

I don't sell anything with stains and do the would I be happy? Before uploading.

I give everything a refresh wash (unless selling new bits I never used) as in storage it can smell musky. I try to inspect it all thoroughly so would be mortified if something slipped through.
Anything worn (that well washed material feel) I sell cheap 1-2 quid and state material is well washed then hope that statement with the quid price makes it obvious 😅

I get surprised when you see items on there listed with a high price, same as new items and they are like 'Almost perfect condition, just few bleach stains'

Tbh my items often have creases. I do state it but I know folded packaged in a bag will not help with linen, easily creased tops, I try to iron them prior, but I'm hopeless at ironing and I make it worse 😅

But I guess at some point you will always get one to moan regardless or get a dud item.

paristotokyo · 05/10/2024 02:28

Was actually looking at olaplex on there but after reading this thread have decided to stop... Blush

AllTipAndNoIceberg · 05/10/2024 02:31

Okay so I can imagine that if I encountered laboriously produced counterfeit Olaplex, I would be able to tell it wasn’t right in some way.

I cannot imagine that I would be capable of identifying it as jizz though? I mean, I have a reasonable track record of interactions with jizz in normal sex ways but I don’t think I would be like <squeezes unexpected jizz out of Olaplex bottle> ‘hey, I know what this is!’

editing to add my actual question which is: what was the giveaway? consistency? … odour? 😩

FuckingCheek · 05/10/2024 03:14

@AllTipAndNoIceberg I'd probably not notice either. Just think it was a rubbish hair product.

Vinted seems OK, think I've bought 5 items from there and all good.

Yes! I was going to say this too. Drives me mad. Also sellers will post a picture of them wearing the item, for instance on a night out to show what it looks like on and list it 'new without tags'. Puts me right off!

MissyPants · 05/10/2024 11:03

Also what's incredibly annoying is the silly offers. I've just taken something off and put it on eBay. I was listing a brand new coat with tags and was getting silly offers way below asking price, and it was already a bargain. The coat is £65 new and I was asking for £30. Kept getting offers for £20.
Plus vinted have now made everyone use Royal Mail as an option to post. Have a look, you can't switch the toggle off. I'm slowly moving back to eBay.
