“Joker” - the first film

So I keep seeing adverts / press / promotions for the Joker 2 film which is being released this Friday I believe in the UK.

This led me to research into the original Joker film. I thought that this was something to do with Heath Ledger and the Dark Knight film, but alas turns out it is not and completely different, and was released in 2019!

I’ve just watched the trailer for the first Joker film and it looks good. I am tempted to watch it on Prime / Apple TV tonight to see if I like it and then join in with the hype for the second film.

However, what’s it like? Is it scary? Worth watching? I’d be watching by myself and I also live by myself so don’t want to scare myself!!

I personally didn’t like it. But my dh loved it. It focuses a lot more on Joker’s mental health issues rather than any criminal issues

Letsnotargue · 02/10/2024 16:55

We thought it was OK, but it seemed to lack substance. By the end I realised I didn’t really care what happened to any of the characters, and that’s always a bad sign.

I loved it (huge JP fan) but it’s not for everyone

It isn't scary, more disturbing. Like the rise of the incel movement

Pieceofpurplesky · 02/10/2024 17:22

It is a disturbing look at mental health and in that respect, brilliant

mikado1 · 02/10/2024 17:42

Brilliantly done. Loved it and found myself on his side... bit brutal at times. The last film I saw before Covid I think!

T4phage · 02/10/2024 17:44

I enjoyed it, I'd say it's worth watching. It's quite a dark melancholy film.

LillyLeaf · 02/10/2024 17:46

I loved it and wanted more at the end which is rare for most films, so I'm very happy there is a 2nd one.

VenusStarr · 02/10/2024 17:47

It's disturbing. The feeling stayed with me for days after and I've not watched it again. It's not something I'd say I enjoyed watching but it's definitely worth watching. As others have said, it's very focused on mental health.

Startingagainandagain · 02/10/2024 17:48

I loved the first Joker film. It was so different and disturbing. Worth seeing.

AuntieMarys · 02/10/2024 17:52

I loved it. But I love dark, dystopian, off kilter

Paisleydad · 02/10/2024 18:46

Oh yes. Absolutely worth a watch. A terrific, brilliant performance by JP. Sad. Deserved an Oscar.

Orangesandlemons4 · 02/10/2024 22:36

Ooh ok - I didn’t get a chance to watch it tonight in the end but will try give it a go tomorrow night!

It is highly recommended. Disturbing, dark, but brilliant. And there was a funny bit in it that I am going to hell for for laughing at (anyone who has seen it will probably guess the scene I am thinking of).

IDontHateRainbows · 02/10/2024 22:39

I loved Joker. A proper psycho-drama. In fact you're making me want to watch it again.

Deathraystare · 03/10/2024 15:16

Loved it! Might watch it again as it is also on non prime - eg freeview. I think the weekend but cannot remember! Just browsed through tv magazine!

IDontHateRainbows · 03/10/2024 15:35

Amazing, that's my Saturday night sorted! On a no spend challenge as expensive weekend away the following

Prizepudding · 03/10/2024 16:19

Also enjoyed it but would agree it was quite dark. On itv tomorrow night at 9 so will re-watch.

Orangesandlemons4 · 03/10/2024 16:23

If you’re feeling a bit rubbish at the moment (like I am), is it probably best avoiding it?

I thought it was a great film. Definitely going to rewatch ahead of the sequel.

DP is a big film buff and didn’t rate it but he’s very fussy and mainly likes arty B&W films where nothing really happens.

For me it was an interesting look at MH issues and managed to make a very flawed character quite sympathetic .

Dontsayyouloveme · 03/10/2024 16:25

It’s an incredible film! Watched it many times.. it’s not a horror film if that’s what you’re worried about. Deffo give it a watch! I’m so excited to see the next one tomorrow night

Mentally rubbish or physically rubbish?

i think it’s an incredible film but if feeling emotionally unsettled maybe not the best time to see it. That said, my default headspace is emotionally unsettled and i still loved it. It didn’t make me feel worse and gave me. A lot to think about.

Orangesandlemons4 · 03/10/2024 16:31

@MaggieBsBoat mentally a bit rubbish. I’ve felt worse in the past and go through phases, but I get these negative ruminating thoughts in my head which really get to me. I’ve been on anti depressants for 4 years. I do want to watch the film, but I don’t know if the film will give me more things to worry about if that makes sense!

Is it? I can't find it on the schedule.

ITV1 9pm tomorrow is My Mum, Your Dad... and that is on the ITV site.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 03/10/2024 16:42

I loved it. Very dark. I felt quite sorry for him through most of it. Also it’s a great portrayal of all the corruption and wealth imbalance of Gotham and how the austerity inevitably leads to rising crime. The Wayne’s don’t come out of it looking great. I’m bingeing the Gotham series at the moment and absolutely loving it.
