“Joker” - the first film

So I keep seeing adverts / press / promotions for the Joker 2 film which is being released this Friday I believe in the UK.

This led me to research into the original Joker film. I thought that this was something to do with Heath Ledger and the Dark Knight film, but alas turns out it is not and completely different, and was released in 2019!

I’ve just watched the trailer for the first Joker film and it looks good. I am tempted to watch it on Prime / Apple TV tonight to see if I like it and then join in with the hype for the second film.

However, what’s it like? Is it scary? Worth watching? I’d be watching by myself and I also live by myself so don’t want to scare myself!!

@XenoBitch, that’s odd, I have scheduled to record it on sky. I’m in Scotland so STV but would have thought all itv channels would have it on.

Took DC when they were 16 I think. They said it was the "best film they'd ever seen" to be fair it was probably the first real grown up film they'd been to so it was a proper new era of viewing for them.

Gonna give this a go right now on ITV!

Just watched it again
Not free on prime tho. £3.49... but worth it.

Love watching him transform from sad lonely loser to full on psycho. Although he ends up killing people, I feel like Arthur/ Joker is at least learning to stand up for himself ( albeit totally in the wrong way)

Can't wait for #2 tomorrow

It is highly recommended. Disturbing, dark, but brilliant. And there was a funny bit in it that I am going to hell for for laughing at (anyone who has seen it will probably guess the scene I am thinking of).

Which bit was this?

AnnaMagnani · 04/10/2024 21:22

@SnowflakeSmasher86 are you married to my DH too?

His specialty is B&W art house films I once described as 'isn't it hard being very rich, life is so meaningless, never mind they have great hair'

We are watching on ITV and DH is already complaining the Scorsese references are too obvious.

Nomither · 04/10/2024 21:34

Beautiful soundtrack

Pinkchilli · 04/10/2024 21:39

I remember watching it whilst pregnant and i was so anxious and on edge watching it. It was good but disturbing! Great twist in it

Disturbia81 · 04/10/2024 21:46

It's absolutely brilliant, love Joaquin and love how it explores why he turned out like he did.

Does it involve a door handle?

Orangesandlemons4 · 04/10/2024 21:49

I am actually really enjoying it so far!

I don’t want to see any spoilers so will come back on here when it’s finished!

Yep, that scene. Was a rollercoaster.

Disturbia81 · 04/10/2024 21:57

@XenoBitch When you said you were going to hell I knew it 🙈 It really was a rollercoaster, I watched it last night and still felt on edge during that bit despite seeing it a few times.
Enjoy OP 🖤

I am watching too though I've seen it before. I remember the first time I watched it, I felt affected for days afterwards, so be kind to yourself. Although fiction, it's a real insight into the lives of people who are on the edge of society. It's a wonderful but dark and disturbing film. Joaquin Phoenix is sensational.

Orangesandlemons4 · 04/10/2024 23:08

Wow that was intense. I enjoyed it, and glad I watched it, but didn’t expect there to be so many violent and bloody scenes.

Definitely going to be watching the second film now.

It's disturbing. The feeling stayed with me for days after and I've not watched it again. It's not something I'd say I enjoyed watching but it's definitely worth watching. As others have said, it's very focused on mental health.

Totally agree - it stayed with me for ages. I watched it at the cinema and felt maybe being at home with a blanket watching would be better. Joaquim Phoenix was amazing. It felt like an experience rather than a film.

Disturbia81 · 05/10/2024 00:03

He was a lovely sweet person but strange with odd behaviour and society shunned him. He then reaches his limit, commits murder and unintentionally stirs up unrest and gets the acceptance and adoration he wanted. It's so easy to see why some people end up where they do.

ToNiceWithSpice · 05/10/2024 00:09

It made me feel sad!

ILostMyself · 05/10/2024 00:10

I absolutely loved the first film. I’ve just watched the second one in the cinema though and, personally, I was v disappointed.

UmopapIsdn · 05/10/2024 00:15

I saw it in the cinema with my DH and prayed for death as I hated it that much, my DH loved it. It’s been years but I still occasionally bring up how he made me suffer (it was DH who wanted to see it and got me to tag along).

I wish I hadn’t told him about the songs in the second one as he’s now refusing to go see it. I could have watched him suffer this time!

Gutted!

stayathomer · 05/10/2024 14:43

Just a warning, I think you have to pay to see it even with a prescription either on prime or apple, not sure which!

AdviceNeeded2024 · 05/10/2024 15:01

It’s a brilliant film, Joaquin Phoenix is exceptional in it. I loved how it showed how he became the Joker and it definitely left it open for what could be a brilliant sequel as he moves into the role of the Joker. I love the darker comic book films with a good gripping story (instead of all the Marvel shite - hardly any storyline, cheesy and 40 minute fight scenes ad infinitum)

However… I then have seen Joker 2 is a musical?! I really dislike musicals, especially in films, so I’d be interesting to hear off anyone who has seen it and if it’s worth watching/as good as the first one!

See my post above ☺️ can I ask why you found it disappointing?

AnnaMagnani · 05/10/2024 15:11

Update: we got to about 45 minutes before calling it a day.

Joaquin Phoenix was great but also unbelievably annoying.
