Driving after getting the Mirena coil fitted.

I'm getting the coil fitted tomorrow and due to a work commitment I need to go straight from work to the gynaecologist. If I get somebody to collect me afterwards then I'll have to leave my own car at the medical centre.
Did anybody drive themselves after the procedure? I know I can't predict how I'll feel afterwards but I'm trying to make a plan.

I did. No problem.

ReineMarieGamache · 01/10/2024 20:08

I was absolutely fine to drive. Took a paracetamol beforehand. It was a bit uncomfortable but nowhere near the horror stories that you read on here. Hope it goes well.

DivorcedAndDelighted · 01/10/2024 20:09

Yes, I did, no problem, and for my last one I had a complicated removal of old Mirena where the threads had disappeared, so they had to go right inside. I was given local anaesthetic. It was OK and driving was no problem even after that.

Thanks. Collecting the car on Thursday morning before work would be a nuisance.

I'm not usually nervous about medical things, but I am a bit about this.

Yes, first time I walked, second time I drove (surgery further away). It was very straightforward both times, similar to a smear.

juicelooseabootthishoose · 01/10/2024 20:14

I took the kids with me and had no childcare and drove us all home. Felt a bit washed out and ready for a cuppa and sit down but perfectly safe to drive home.

ReineMarieGamache · 01/10/2024 20:14

I've had two now. It's over and done with before you know it.

cartwheelsandhandstands · 01/10/2024 20:15

I went on my lunch break and drove both ways myself.

was crampy afterwards with light bleeding but nothing major.

roses2 · 01/10/2024 20:15

First time I had nausea within 5 minutes which lasted a few hours and I had to lie down for awhile. Second time no issues at replacement.

Is this your first fitting?

WetBandits · 01/10/2024 20:18

It’s impossible to say as anyone can have a vasovagal reaction up to 45 minutes after a coil fit, no matter how well they prepared with pain relief or how easy the procedure was! We probably see about four a week out of 50+ coil fits. I’ve had two coils, had a vasovagal with my first and was back treating my own patients 10 minutes after my second.

I’d always have a backup plan just in case, and at the very least sit in the waiting room for a good 10-15 mins afterwards to see how you feel (whilst eating some chocolate!)

MissPobjoysPonies · 01/10/2024 20:25

I was fine, didn’t even realise I should/shouldn’t have driven. I was pretty lucky with the procedure, no pain, no problem at all.

I have had a completely screwed up cycle since (5/6 week period 😳)

User975312469 · 01/10/2024 20:26

I do have a backup plan as a DC could leave work and collect me or I could get a taxi. Life would be easier if I could bring my own car home though.
@DivorcedAndDelighted your username made me smile. My exH would probably have reluctantly collected me if we were still together but I was just saying that I'm glad he's gone and I don't have to be dealing with him as well as gynaecological issues.

I have had vasovagal reactions too - first one during labour, second one with a womb biopsy and I started sweating profusely, wanting to vomit, pass out and started tearing my clothes off like a deranged maniac. It was really really intense and frightening. They had to dip bed right back and stick me on oxygen and a drip for an hour. Don't drive.

Do you know if removal is as bad as insertion? I'm terrified to have mine removed after a painful insertion.

coffeeandfags99 · 01/10/2024 20:28

My vasovagal happened after the biopsy pipelle was pulled out. Like a big cervix tickle. It didn't hurt going in or out but fuck me out set it off big time

Westfacing · 01/10/2024 20:31

Not a Mirena but when I was in my 30s had a vasovagal reaction after having an IUD fitted at the GP - on the short walk home I suddenly became very weak and could barely walk.

Somehow staggered home - when I looked at myself in the hall mirror I was completely white and looked like I was made of wax! Awful experience but I quickly recovered.

ghostbusters · 01/10/2024 20:35

My GP does fittings and removals. I got a letter with my appointment and instructions. The letter said I was not to drive for an hour after my appointment. The GP would not go ahead unless someone was there to collect me after. She said I would most likely be fine but my car insurance would be invalidated if I crashed on my way home /to work.

Dinnerplease · 01/10/2024 20:39

Both times I cycled home! Sat for 10 mins in the waiting room first.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/10/2024 20:43

I'm on my third Morena and have never had problems after fitting; only mild period-like cramps the first time. In fact last time I went straight back to work having had it done in my lunch break because it was the only time available(!)

WorriedRelative · 01/10/2024 20:45

I went back to work for a few hours, then drove home and later went to visit a friend.

Blarn · 01/10/2024 20:48

After my second, could have driven no problem at all. After my first, no. Nor only was insertion incredibly painful but I had very bad cramping about half an hour after. I think the problem is not knowing how your body will react to it.

Cheepcheepcheep · 01/10/2024 20:50

For me it was like driving with period pain, annoying but fine. I’d have a back up plan though.

AllAboutNiamh · 01/10/2024 20:50

I drove. It didn’t occur to me not to. I didn’t even feel mind going in tbh, I was chatting away to the nurse and she said ‘all
done!’.

LateMumma · 01/10/2024 20:52

I had mirena fitted at same time as an (anaesthetic free) hysteroscopy, and I managed to drive there and back. It was painful at the time of doing, but actually didn't get worse until the next couple of days
