Driving after getting the Mirena coil fitted.

I'm getting the coil fitted tomorrow and due to a work commitment I need to go straight from work to the gynaecologist. If I get somebody to collect me afterwards then I'll have to leave my own car at the medical centre.
Did anybody drive themselves after the procedure? I know I can't predict how I'll feel afterwards but I'm trying to make a plan.

Fist one I was sick after getting off tube on way home.

2nd I had to be told to lie down and drink hot milky tea as at risk of fainting.

So yes. I'd not plan to drive afterwards.

LIZS · 01/10/2024 21:00

It was fine, just give yourself a bit of time between fitting and leaving.

ChickpeaPie · 01/10/2024 21:02

I drove home after but was only a short journey.
The fitting was worse than pushing out a baby with no pain relief. Then I couldn't move off the sofa for hours and had to take pain killers and have a hot water bottle on my belly all afternoon. It was awful.

I totally plan to spend the evening on the couch with a hot water bottle, chocolate and painkillers. Even if it's not too bad. I'm suffering now in anticipation.

Do you know if removal is as bad as insertion? I'm terrified to have mine removed after a painful insertion.

Oh nah, removal is a doddle!

burnoutbabe · 02/10/2024 08:48

Yes I was fine with removal.

It wasn't actually painful having it inserted (bar one second) but just the after feelings of faintness/sickness etc.

Agree removal is easy peasy, the tough part was getting someone to do it!

PercyPhelps · 02/10/2024 08:53

I’ve had three and drove home after all of them.

Sprogonthetyne · 02/10/2024 08:56

I drove there and back. I did sit in the car for about 10 minutes before I felt ready, but there was no major drama.

AltitudeCheck · 02/10/2024 09:01

I walked there and back but would have felt fine to drive. Some cramping but nothing that stopped me carrying on with normal activities. Removal was same a smear, quick and easy. Insertion was a sharp pain but over v quickly.

WhoAteAllTheDinosaurs · 02/10/2024 09:26

Yes, have had several coils fitted, most recently a mirena. Was painful having it put in but just crampy, light bleeding afterwards. Took some painkillers beforehand and spent afternoon/evening on the sofa with tea and hot water bottle. Drove home no problems but did take my time leaving the surgery.

I just inserted the tablet to soften my uterus. I'm getting the coil to stop heavy bleeding. I have to say that being at work with heavy bleeding and a softening uterus feels very 😱

What is the tablet for softening the uterus? Never heard of that

OP I can't help with the driving situation but I had one put in for very very heavy irregular periods (after zero issues ever with periods this just started happening) and it's worked great so far. Mine was done under a GA as I also had a few other minor procedures done so obviously I couldn't drive but hopefully you will find it works for you as well.

Justasmallgless · 02/10/2024 21:29

My first was pretty grim and I fainted, but was pre- kids.
After all others (four I think) have been n fit to drive. Tilted cervix so always a bugger getting them in and out though.

Painkillers and chocolate, don't rush but if you feel ok to drive then do so

User975312469 · 02/10/2024 21:50

Everything went fine. It was a bit uncomfortable but not painful. I was fine to drive afterwards and to stop off for chocolate on the way home.
The doctor that I saw is new to my GP's practice and she specialises in women's health. It's great to know that she's there.
@SparkyBlue that's good to hear. I have to back for a check in 6 weeks and if everything is going well I can think about HRT then too.
