Would you go to the gp. Possible blood clot.

In the days following a seven hour long car journey, so sat in one position for hours, I developed a small lump in my calf. My calf muscle also feel tight and swollen inside my leg. I’m a bit concerned it could be an a blood clot. Eight years ago I had the same symptoms after being on crutches for months and ignored it. The next night in ended up in A and E with a pulmonary embolism after ignoring the blood clot symptoms. Would you seek medical attention in my situation. I don’t want to waste a gp appointment but it’s not getting any better.

with your history I'd definitely make an appointment. I'd even consider going straight to A&E.

1990s · 30/09/2024 14:24

GP will send you to A&E as they don’t have the diagnostic tools to find out if is or isn’t. You’re higher risk once you’ve had one, so I’d definitely go.

PussGirl · 30/09/2024 14:24

A&E is best as they can do bloods / scan and get results very quickly - the GP will not be able to do that (I'm a GP)

If you are still on blood thinners from last time the risk of clot is much less, but not zero.

With your history you should go to A&E as an above person said GPs will tell you to go there anyway.

henlake7 · 30/09/2024 15:35

It sounds more like a peripheral blood clot but given your history you should def get it checked out.

JohnTheRevelator · 30/09/2024 18:50

Given your previous history,I would go straight to A and E. I had a similar thing happen 6 years. I went to my GP and he told me to straight to the hospital to get it checked out. Turned out I had a pulmonary embolism.

HappyHolidai · 30/09/2024 18:53

Absolutely! Go ASAP!

Something like 25% of PEs are discovered post mortem, that's how serious they are.

I'm currently recovering from one and it's not fun (as you will know from your previous experience).

Pigeonqueen · 30/09/2024 18:55

Don’t waste your time with a GP appointment. Go to A and E as they have the medical equipment to rule a clot out.

WhoStoleYourHighHorse · 30/09/2024 18:58

Go to hospital now. If you have a history of clots, they will take this very seriously and get you immediate care. (I am a super serial clotter - prompt action is a life saver!)

rubyrubyrubyrubymurray · 30/09/2024 19:06

Primary care unable to diagnose DVT anymore, pathway is straight to a&e. Please do.

Noodlesnotstrudels · 30/09/2024 19:47

Yes you should get it checked out. In the long term, you might also want to think about preventative measures? My DH had a blood clot 10years ago ish. He is able to get a prescription for blood thinners to take in the run up to and shortly after any long journeys or flights as at the time of his original clot, he was told it can make you more likely to have another clot in the future.

WhoStoleYourHighHorse · 30/09/2024 21:18

@Butterandrice - hope everything is ok.

gamerchick · 30/09/2024 21:21

If you've already had a clot, are you not on meds to prevent another one?

My daughter died from a pulmonary embolism from a DVT. Don't fuck about with doctors appointments.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 30/09/2024 21:24

I agree, go tonight. DH's was overlooked and the consequences were as serious as they can be.

WhoStoleYourHighHorse · 30/09/2024 21:26

@Butterandrice - how are you?

@Butterandrice - how are you?

Thanks all for your messages. I went to an and e last night and spent a few hours there. I have a blood clot in my leg. They’ve given me meds to take last night and this morning and I’m back at the hospital today for a scan. I’m just hoping it doesn’t travel. The PE I had previously was quite scary.

So pleased you went to A&E - speed always matters. Have sent you a pm.

HighPrecisionGhosts · 01/10/2024 12:58

Phew.... glad you went to A&E. Hope all goes well.

So, so sorry to hear this. I had a very, very close shave several years and it’s such a scary thing 💐

AutumnCrow · 01/10/2024 13:57

I'm so sorry, @gamerchick, that's so very sad and awful.

Glad you are having treatment, OP. Like @gamerchick said, you shouldn't fuck about with this (potential) stuff - you did the right thing.

Are you ok now, @WhoStoleYourHighHorse?

EdgeOfSixty · 01/10/2024 17:46

My adult DD thought she might have a clot in her calf. She called 111 and they referred her there and then, to a separate clinic next to A&E and she was seen very quickly. Luckily no clot. Really good service from the hospital.

henlake7 · 01/10/2024 18:00

Glad you got it sorted.
I remember when I went to A and E with a suspected blood clot they told me I must be fine as I was still at work and they wouldn't see me!
GP confirmed a clot a couple of days later but he really wasn't that interested. Thankfully it wasn't a deep vein one!

Thanks @AutumnCrow - all good now after 3 weeks in intensive care and double figure DVTs and at least 8 PEs. I live a surprisingly normal life, just obeying a few basic, but important, rules.

DeliciousApples · 01/10/2024 19:29

Thank God you went to A&E OP.

Caterpillar24 · 01/10/2024 19:34

Go straight to the emergency department!
