If you are not young, what music do you like? And want to hear?

I hate Radio 2 with a vengeance. It all sounds like cheesy cheap pop, which I have never liked because I don't enjoy obviously easy listens. I really want to hear new music, well played, accomplished, sophisticated. Spotify seems to deliver 20 minutes of decent stuff and then descends into plinky plonk crap.. it descends into the cheapest generic version of the genre. How does a person with varied taste in music continue to hear the best of the new?

I don't really listen to music anymore. If I have the radio on, it's on LBC. But if at an event (wedding etc) I like all the stuff you hate!

🤣🤣

Greatnorthnan · 27/09/2024 20:57

I usually listen to BBC Radio 6 Music. I like the diversity of music they play.

SunsetSkylane · 27/09/2024 20:57

I listen to music all day every but never the radio, only Spotify.

Spotify is good because it suggests music based on your current listening, so it understands your likes and will serve you similar artists and genres.

Papyrophile · 27/09/2024 20:57

Good on you! Enjoy the memories.

Radio 6 music pretty much

I have a list of favourites which I sometimes ask Alexa to play but mostly prefer the ad hoc radio

Papyrophile · 27/09/2024 20:59

Radio 6 is my preference for music too.

I really like our local BBC station in the mornings as they play a really good range of music, I've found a few artists recently this way like Morgan Wallen, Teddy Swims etc.

EasternStandard · 27/09/2024 21:03

I pretty much have the radio on all the time when I'm home and each station has a reason to make me switch

R4 - too interrupting or plays
BBC World Service - goes off piste at times
Times Radio - adverts and goes off somewhere

For Radio 6 music it's too much chat or a bad song

Papyrophile · 27/09/2024 21:04

I have had a Spotify account so long that it is still free of advertising. More than 10 years? But I find it is very safe?

Heart radio 70's!!!

Sethera · 27/09/2024 21:07

Anything from about 1968 to 2000.

HowardTJMoon · 27/09/2024 21:09

All of my radios are pretty much nailed to Radio 4. I listen to a bit of Radio 3 and 6 every now and then as well but not often.

I listen to a lot of Spotify and go to gigs instead. I get recommendations for new artists either from Spotify, from friends, and/or from watching the BBC's coverage of Glastonbury and other festivals. Ben Howard, Wolf Alice, Jon Hopkins, Bat for Lashes, Phoebe Bridgers, Heilung and Newdad are all artists I saw on TV playing at Glastonbury that I've listened to a lot since. Most recently I've seen Bdrmm, Lili Refrain and Kalandra play live based on the recommendation of friends.

Anything from 1700 to 2024. Myself born 60 years or so ago.

These are just the B's I can quickly recall:

Bach. Bjork. Bryan Ferry. Beyonce. Bon Jovi. B52's. Ben & Sebastian. Baraz (Alina).

Some of their most ingraining songs:

Give Me Back My Man. Show Me. Venus As A Child. Smash Into You. Slave to Love....with that iconic guitar note start.

Music is my pleasure and I invest especially on Saturdays. Let it rain tomorrow.

tarheelbaby · 27/09/2024 21:22

I like music played by musicians who can play instruments well. So mostly I prefer 60s, 70s, 80s. But I also like witty lyrics so like some rap and R&B.
I frequently listen to Planet Rock on DAB or online. The regular mix is a little too 'heavy metal' for me but it makes a good change from all the other pop stations and I like some of the DJs. I particularly like rock blues so often listen to the Blues Power show via website.

*My v nice local station sold out to 'Greatest Hits'. It's rubbish - a radio station for old, white men. 'Nation radio' is a little better - at least they play music from recent times too.

Conniethecatapillar · 27/09/2024 21:23

I always go back to the same artists and rediscover songs I forgot about, listening to Pulp at the moment! I don't listen to radio I hate it with a passion.

BabySocksNeverStayOn · 27/09/2024 21:28

Radio 6 ... Tried Radio X as a big fan of Chris Moyles and music better than Radio 2, BUT the adverts... Have now listened to Radio 6 for a year or so.

LifeofBrienne · 27/09/2024 21:31

I listen to Spotify but I pay for it and don’t do any of the ‘suggested for you’ or whatever. I click on playlists that sound interesting and then go to artists’ pages and check out their top 10 tracks to see if I might like some of their other stuff. I go through phases of being into stuff and listening to it all the time and then get into something else. Occasionally it’s new music but mostly just ‘new to me’.

I use Spotify a lot. Release Radar is a playlist that comes out every Friday, new releases, and is tailored to your tastes via the algorithm. I find stuff I like from that.

They also have a Discover Weekly on a Monday tailored for you.

TheGoddessMinerva · 27/09/2024 21:53

Radio 6 and Spotify here (I pay for it). Plus I have a magpie approach to music, and regularly use SoundHound to identify songs in shops, or blasting from cars to add to my playlists.

I’ll listen to anything from 1924 to 2024

Shytalker · 27/09/2024 21:56

i also loathe Radio 2. Hammy, bad music, endless banal chat.

Radio 4 for news here and Radio 6 for music. And Spotify.

SunsetSkylane · 27/09/2024 21:59

What kind of things do you like OP, maybe we can suggest something? Or just give you some totally personal suggestions?

PermanentTemporary · 27/09/2024 22:00

Radio 3 in the morning, radio 6 in the afternoon. Increasingly I play whole albums on Spotify. I'm more likely to listen to the World Service than R4, there's too many programmes on 4 I can't stand.

I get most interesting music from Cerys Matthews, Craig Charles and Tom Ravenscroft.

AgileGreenSeal · 27/09/2024 22:03

I don’t use music for ‘background’, I prefer to choose something and then listen to it.

My taste is music is very eclectic- worship music at least once a day for an hour or so while I pray, particularly I enjoy Upper Room spontaneous live sets, esp “Be Enthroned & Open the Scroll” or Jackie Baker “Overshadow Me” (also spontaneous). also Iona, and Jason Upton.

Thoroughly enjoy the dramatic Wagner’s ‘Ride of the Valkyries’, the iconic Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’, the stunning Holst’s ‘Planet Suite’, etc

Loving this sublime piece from the St Petersburg Choral School (Glinka)

IMustDoMoreExercise · 27/09/2024 22:04

I am nearly 60 and like listening to old and new music.

I listen to the main Absolute Radio station during the day and then Greatest Hits radio after 10pm.

I like the mix of music on Absolute. They play a lot of soft rock and also new music.

I tried listening to Radio 6 music when it was mentioned on here, but it was too way out for me. It played some of the same songs as Absolute but too many others which I did not like.

I'm more likely to listen to the World Service than R4 same here these days
