Names! Peach?

Hi all,

I'm not pregnant but hoping to be in the next couple of years. This is a bit of a 'just for fun' thread. I was thinking last night about some names that I have come across IRL which I really like.

Girls:
Peach
Pia
Storm
April
Sunday
Octavia

Boys:
Ives
Navy
Phoenix
Roman

I don't think I'd have the balls to use any of them. DD has a little out there name with only a few called the same name in the last decade - but it is an established name and not a newly made up one. I like unique names and striking names, names that people would remember and set aside from traditional names. I also think that every name is a made up name. At one point 'Charlotte' was a made up name and there was a first person to be called that, so all names have to start somewhere!

Anyway this was just for fun. Anyone have any wacky names they love but wouldn't use?

Clementine is NOT after the fruit. It's the feminine form of Clemens.

It doesn't matter about the meaning. It's still a fruit name!
But it is the least bad of the fruit names.

16missedcalls · 27/09/2024 14:19

Amber, Jade, violet, coral, ebony & Hazel are all colour names.

There would've been a time where those were really rare and not heard of.

I honestly don't see why peach is any less acceptable!

Nope!

I do like colour names though. Violet? That's acceptable..

Yes that's quite pretty. I quite like Red for a boy.

I really love Pia, and Roman would be a good sibling name.

But you have the surname Carter OP.........I'm not sure any of these names go with the surname Carter (not that there's anything wrong with it but it doesn't scream exotic). With a surname like that I think you need to stick with the likes of James, Jacob, Molly or Emma. How could you think Sunday Carter went well together?

I really like Peach Carter...
but I also really want to know what your other DD is called now Grin

I would but I'll probably get loads of posters telling me I'm a bad mum and saying nasty things above a 3 year old, this thread hasn't given me much hope 😂

I think funky names go with a standard surname personally. Carter is good as not a lot won't flow with it.

I think Peach Carter & Ives Carter are fabulous!

whitney and Zack from eastenders named their baby peach as she was the size of a peach at some point….and then she was stillborn 😢

I don’t see it as a “real” name, and yes, my 5-year-old refers to peaches as bums.

I also think James, Jacob, molly etc are all nice names but very average, with many many kids called that in the school. It's a bit too 'safe' for me and life's too short for blending in!

I wouldn't name my child anything that sounded like it was after a celeb eg Roman Kemp.
Octavia is v posh but nice. April- lovely but not wacky at all. Sunday- just no. All those boys names are terrible- sorry!

Genericusername4 · 27/09/2024 14:35

My dog is called Peach.

So...no.

A lot of "strange" names are coming over from America. There is a huge trend over there for names like Cooper, Trader, Hutch, Carter, Sawyer etc.

They're all without fail dreadful names.

16missedcalls · 27/09/2024 14:45

I think Cooper is lovely for a boy!
Cooper Carter has a nice ring to it. I'll add that to my names list.

IRL I know boys : Phoenix, Maverick and Talon.
The girl names seem to be more restrained. I heard two little girls at a dance class- one was Harley. One was Lennon (or Lenin? But I hope Lennon).

I had two boys- had millions of lovely girls names ready too. I think it's criminal to call a girl Lennon..

Notreat · 27/09/2024 15:04

From your list April, and Pia are well established names. I don't think there is anything unusual or 'out there ' about them. Octavia is also an old name although not used much now and Roman and Phoenix are quite popular

JaninaDuszejko · 27/09/2024 15:25

I think funky names go with a standard surname personally.

I hadn't thought about it that way round but a wacky surname definitely needs a plain name like John so I agree, a simple surname can handle a wackier first name.

There's regularly threads on here about words that would make lovely sounding names if they didn't have unfortunate meanings. Melena comes up regularly on them. Is this thread really that different? If the Victorians can suddenly start calling their daughters after Gemstones (Ruby, Pearl, Opal, Beryl etc) then why can't we start using fruit? It's a damn sight better than Alloy, Banksy, Daemon and Jihad (all of which were used in the UK last year).

Wholeheartedly agree!!

Ruby / violet / jade were all rare and unique at some point. See also lots of other fruit names!

I don't know why people get so upset about it all

So change your name by deed poll to a shit wacky name and bustle about wearing Su Pollard glasses.

Peach - no.
Pia - lovely.
Storm - awful.
April - lovely.
Sunday - no
Octavia - the Ostrich from Pipkins.

Boys:
Ives - no
Navy - awful
Phoenix - horrendous

Roman - no

FlibbertyGibbitt · 27/09/2024 16:06

My grandson is called Navy. Absolutely love it, popular in the USA , means tall ships .

Newdaylucky · 27/09/2024 16:09

Peach - no. It doesn’t sound like a name. It’s a fruit - and not one most people are used to hearing used as a name. It’s a loo roll brand, a bum emoji and, if you consider the sound of Peach without the meaning of the word, it’s not even a pleasant-sounding, melodious word. Peachy is slang for something good (with the same kind of vibe as “corking”) but it’s often used sarcastically eg “My tyre broke. Isn’t that just peachy?” Peaches are lovely fruits, and I think it’s best that that’s what they should remain.
Pia - great
Storm - silly name.
April- fine.
Sunday- just sounds daft. If you must use a day of the week Domenica is Sunday in Italian and I think that would make a much better first name.
Octavia - great.
Boys:
Ives - great.
Navy - oh my god. Not a name: a colour and and an armed service.
Phoenix - fine.
Roman - fine.

MonsteraMama · 27/09/2024 16:10

Er, given what the Peach emoji is commonly used to depict by the youngins I don't think it's a super wise name choice. Definitely not the same as Clementine in the modern vernacular of tiny little pictures

🍆💦🍑

The name "Violet" has been around since before the 1920s, when my late mother was born.

Coronation Street's Violet Carson was born in 1898.

Coronation Street's Violet Carson was born in 1898.

When I was a child, growing up in the 50s and 60s, there were at least four women in my village of around 1000 inhabitants who were called "Violet".

abourdain · 12/07/2025 08:57

coming to defend you OP because there’s literally nothing wrong with Peach as a first name and I will be using it if I have multiple daughters. I never considered it until the TV show You in 2020. I thought Peach Salinger was such a cool name by the end but Peach was just too outrageous. But it really grew on me, I love unusual names, and just because it’s not everyone’s taste doesn’t mean it’s bad. If the world can get behind Olive, Clementine, Apple, and Cherry, then it can for Peach. And for the right family it works! We live on a farm and I want to only use nature names

we have countless Alice’s, Rosie’s, Eleanor’s, and Charlotte’s here in the UK. We can afford a Peach or two

edit: also want to add culture can and does change! my name is a normal nature name in the US but is extremely uncommon in the UK, which I would’ve never known until moving here! So would the British have chosen my name had it been up to them in the 90’s? No. And do they compliment it almost every time I introduce myself? Yes! These kids aren’t growing up in our decades, they’re living in their own so I’m sure Peach and Navy will be fine with Maverick, Axel, and Ava by their side
