Names! Peach?

Hi all,

I'm not pregnant but hoping to be in the next couple of years. This is a bit of a 'just for fun' thread. I was thinking last night about some names that I have come across IRL which I really like.

Girls:
Peach
Pia
Storm
April
Sunday
Octavia

Boys:
Ives
Navy
Phoenix
Roman

I don't think I'd have the balls to use any of them. DD has a little out there name with only a few called the same name in the last decade - but it is an established name and not a newly made up one. I like unique names and striking names, names that people would remember and set aside from traditional names. I also think that every name is a made up name. At one point 'Charlotte' was a made up name and there was a first person to be called that, so all names have to start somewhere!

Anyway this was just for fun. Anyone have any wacky names they love but wouldn't use?

IRL I know boys : Phoenix, Maverick and Talon.
The girl names seem to be more restrained. I heard two little girls at a dance class- one was Harley. One was Lennon (or Lenin? But I hope Lennon).

I actually like those! I think apricot would be cute, NN April

@16missedcalls why would you call a child something nuts like Apricot then NN her a perfectly ordinary name like April??

im glad this just 'a bit of fun' & no child will be named in the process. 😂😂

16missedcalls · 27/09/2024 12:26

I mean I wouldn't call a child apricot but Clementine seems perfectly acceptable (and I think sounds harsh and not as nice as peach or apricot)

What's the difference between Clementine and peach?

Did someone just say “Tuesday’s a name so why not Sunday?” Since when is Tuesday a name?!

Mind you Domenica’s a name in Italian, and that means Sunday. But it also means “belonging to the Lord”, which is why the day is called that, so it makes more sense.

ChungKing · 27/09/2024 12:47

I actually love all of those names, except Peach (great name for a puppy though), but I do like Peaches.

I’m a lecturer and have taught both a Tuesday and a Friday. I mean, actually (female) undergraduates, not the days I gave classes on.

Haha! Wow.

Clementine is NOT after the fruit. It's the feminine form of Clemens.

Also there's a difference between a name which developed over time and one which was plucked out of thin air. Charlotte has an etymology and a meaning. A made up name would be something like Floberjibit, a random combination of letters which means nothing.

Someone in my year at school was called Tuesday.

I knew a Tuppence when I was growing up.

piscofrisco · 27/09/2024 14:03

Oh! I love Pia!

16missedcalls · 27/09/2024 14:04

@TheBirdintheCave what about Cherry, olive & quince? All established names after a fruit.

I don't see how peach is different. All names started somewhere and evolved, what's to stop the likes of Peach to do the same?

Blossom is also a name I've commonly heard, also many other floral names. I don't think there's any difference in naming a child after a fruit than a flower.

I still love it, and if I had the balls I'd definitely use it.

I do want to add, my daughters name is a rare name but it's not on the same spectrum as the names I've listed Grin

Peach isn't a name, neither is Navy. Sunday is cool, I know a few of each sex. Only if born on a Sunday though. I know one who wasn't and the convo has become boring for her.

piscofrisco · 27/09/2024 14:08

I don't think there is much wrong with Peach tbh. It's no worse than Apple certainly... and if it's good enough for Gwyneth Paltrow...I think it could work with a plain ish surname... so Peach Jones or some such.....

Plum Sykes... Peach isn't that much different is it?

Whyshouldicare · 27/09/2024 14:08

A lot of "strange" names are coming over from America. There is a huge trend over there for names like Cooper, Trader, Hutch, Carter, Sawyer etc.

By the way, either name you choose the people around you will never have the guts to tell you to your face that the name is ridiculous, if you name your DD peach most likely all of your family & friends will say it's lovely and beautiful unusual name but behind your back.. they'll say otherwise.

I've seen it happen between my friends.

My family and friends were very unsure about DDs name, they were bluntly honest. We had her name picked out (unisex) as soon as I was pregnant. By the time I was due they loved it. By the time she was born and is now 3, she really suits her name and they can see it. I know some people won't like my name choices, but many do! I think MN has a more of a 'traditional' market for names a there are always very safe names that are suggested on here. I find safe names very boring. Some are very nice names, but I like things a little different.

So I see your point, but I did get the honesty treatment and I'm happy to report most love her name now, including DD which is most important! I did give her a very common but nice middle name though to go by if she wants to when she's older.

Just call your future children a normal name. An actual name. There are enough of them out there.

I don't like 'normal' names all too much.

There was a day where 'Olivia' was first use and very rare. Why do we have to use safe, old trends? Why can't we as a generation make some new ones? In fact, we are making new names and I'm so here for it.

I really don't like the idea of being one of 10 Ava's in the class. I like a bit of edge.
The child can always change their name when they're older.

I really like Peach Carter...
but I also really want to know what your other DD is called now Grin
