Paige89o · 26/09/2024 20:11

this isn’t about my daughter but I’m a head of year 11 in a secondary school and I have a student who is known to be very defiant and difficult to work with she is very popular in school and gets along with everyone buy every time she kickes off and I try and talk to her her thumb is in her mouth so I can’t understand her properly . But it’s not something she dose js when she’s mad or upset it’s all the time I go in to her lessons to see how she’s getting on and she’s sucking her thumb often playing with the tag in her coat at the same time I’m just wondering do I say something to her as it can be irritating always asking her to repeat her self because I can’t understand her or should I just leave it

Ask her to take her thumb out of her mouth when she speaks to you? Otherwise, have you contacted the parents/guardians to request a meeting? There may be other things going on with her that are causing the thumb sucking and the poor behavior in general. Perhaps she is ND and this is a self soothing reflex? You are only going to know if you ask.

I'm sorry but a head of department wrote that? I think that's a bigger problem than a thumb sucker.

HOY with such bad punctuation? That’s a concern.

Tulip8 · 26/09/2024 20:30

Hmm yeah no this isn't real 🤔

Paige89o · 26/09/2024 21:31

I have asked and she just gets annoyed she’s had meeting in the past but her mom I think has given up

That’s a really nasty comment! OP please ignore them! Sorry I have no advice. But please ignore these nasty people. You don’t need to be amazing at English and maths to be a secondary teacher! Fact is you specialise in your subject you did a degree in! English is more important at primary level as you are their sole teacher but in secondary you are the expert in your subject which may well be PE, DT, ART etc. my best friend is an Art teacher and is dyslexic. She has had these nasty comments said to her too.

it’s okay I’m a head of year so I just support my year 11s like the girl I am on about she knows she can always come to me and that’s what I wanted to do

Yeah you do need to be an adult though.

ICantStopEatingg1 · 26/09/2024 21:47

@Paige89o don’t respond to these people anymore. Don’t waste your time. Goodluck with dealing with your year 11’s.

Have you heard of the word 'confidentiality'? I think you might need to look it up.

BirthdayRainbow · 26/09/2024 21:51

Leave her alone.

Say once that you can't tell what she is saying with her thumb in her mouth but really, back off.

I can’t just back off or I wouldn’t be a good head of year me and this girl do get along very well I make sure she’s in as she has really hated school in the past I let her sit in my office when she needs some time but she wants to talk to me witch I love but it’s just hard when I can’t understand her
