this isn’t about my daughter but I’m a head of year 11 in a secondary school and I have a student who is known to be very defiant and difficult to work with she is very popular in school and gets along with everyone buy every time she kickes off and I try and talk to her her thumb is in her mouth so I can’t understand her properly . But it’s not something she dose js when she’s mad or upset it’s all the time I go in to her lessons to see how she’s getting on and she’s sucking her thumb often playing with the tag in her coat at the same time I’m just wondering do I say something to her as it can be irritating always asking her to repeat her self because I can’t understand her or should I just leave it

I don't believe this rambling incoherent post was written by a head of year.

Omg I really hope it wasn't! This would mean that the schools system is... done. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Been drinking? 😅🍻

DillDanding · 26/09/2024 22:24

You sure you’re a teacher? 😂

Mumblechum0 · 26/09/2024 22:26

Which, not witch.

I’ve seen 7 year olds with better spelling and punctuation than this. If this is genuinely a teacher, and this is the standard of education these days, God help us.

This cannot be real.

I agree.

"......I have spoke to her a few times...."

You are a Head of Year ???

Mum5net · 26/09/2024 22:45

Thumb sucking can cause misalignment but occasionally, in some situations, it can also help resolve pain issues and rebalance a TMJ affected mouth.
Teen might need orthodontic work.
Teen might be unaware they are misaligned.

namechange1986 · 26/09/2024 22:48

Witch Hmm

Guavafish1 · 26/09/2024 22:50

I think she is probably anxious and it’s an anxiety tick or mechanism.

There not much you can do except try to speak to her in a calm manner and environment to help her with anxiety

I think Head of Year in some schools is a title given to a pastoral care person, who may or may not be a teacher. In normal circumstances I'd agree with some of the posters saying it's unkind to comment on the OP's poor spelling and grammar. However, it does seem a bit odd for a member of staff in a school not to know the difference between "witch" and "which".

Leaving that aside, I sucked my thumb as a child, teenager and young adult. As I got older I did feel self conscious and generally didn't do it in public unless under a lot of stress. I'm in my late 40s now and I still suck my thumb occasionally if alone and very stressed/upset. Other than teaching basic courtesy, e.g. it's rude to talk to someone with your thumb in your mouth, I'm not sure it's the job of a pastoral care adviser to deal with a teenager's thumb-sucking.

I am dyslexic and I can’t spell to save my life to be honest. I get that she dose it and that’s fine not a problem it’s just the talking do me with it in her mouth and it’s my job to care about them and I really do I have spent most of this school year with her trying to make sure she gets to school. I know she had her moments but I also know she’s a nice girl I have spoke to her about it I’m not even sure she realises she’s doing it most of the time.
