Kids Halloween party

My daughter (8) would like a Halloween party. We can’t fit many kids in our house so would have to be small (maybe 6 kids). I’ve never thrown a kids party and been responsible for organising the games etc! 🫣 Any tips on games to play etc or what’s expected at a Halloween party? Is it done like a birthday party where you give a start and finish time?

If you do one make sure people are fully aware it's just a Halloween party and not a birthday party - because otherwise people will bring presents.
Not really sure on games.
Pin the nose on the witch ?
Apple bobbing (or the version where the apples are hanging on string rather than having water).
Guess the creepy object in the dark (ie a peeled grape is an eyeball type thing).

The mummy game is always a hit

Needmorelego · 26/09/2024 18:36

@pilates what's the mummy game?

Two children are the mummys

The remaining kids are split into two teams with toilet rolls and it’s the first team to wrap the mummy.

SquitMcJit · 26/09/2024 18:39

Yes, probably best to do a start and finish time and tell parents whether it’s drop off or stay?

I love Halloween parties for kids. Absolutey my favourite type! These are things we’ve done at home for a small group like you mention:

Games

  • Mummy wrapping (winding people in toilet roll in teams, give a time e.g. 2 minutes, then judge the best wrapped Mummy).
  • Halloween treasure hunt (hide something like a set of plastic frogs around particular rooms in the house - not all over if you don’t want children ransacking everything! When they bring a frog to you they can exchange for a small treat).
  • Pin the eyeball on the monster/leaves on the spooky tree, fangs on dracula - whatever you can draw!
  • Get a big roll of paper and make a drawing area where they can add to/create a spooky house scene/monster swamp.
  • spooky musical statues to Halloween music (dance like a monster to monster mash - you shout out “Vampire” “Bat” “Zombie” “Ghost” etc, the. Award a small prize for the best one frozen in that pose when the music stops
  • when it’s time to calm down before food… Get a tray of spooky objects (top spider, plastic eyeball, etc) and ask them to look, then cover and remove one and ask who can tell what the witch had taken out of the potion. This one was weirdly popular!

@pilates what's the mummy game?

We did Dress Daddy Up As A Mummy Grin
Two teams , rolls of loo roll , They need to wrap the Mummy
up , quickest wins .
No gaps in the loo roll , DH was dressed in black so easier to see where they missed. Very cheap looroll splits easily into squares so trickier .
And ,,, only his own DS and DD were allowed to wrap his pelvis ,

Our lovely local pub is advertising a children's Halloween party, all classic games, spooky prizes etc and about 3 quid a head - might be an affordable and cute alternative with all the friends if you have anything similar locally. Saves you having to host everyone at your place.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/09/2024 18:42

Put things in a box with two holes ( hand size) and they have to guess .
Mash potato , wizened old carrots with rice crispies stuck on, lycees feel like eyeball, cold soft pasta with a bit of oil.
And the best bit at the end ....your hand ! Colder the better .

SquitMcJit · 26/09/2024 18:43

And yes, Apple bobbing but do that one at the end before they go home, because they will get wet.

Another really good but messy one (also do at the end or outside if not tipping it down is doughnuts on a broomstick. Get a Halloween broomstick (or whatever) and tie ring doughnuts on with string at different heights. Party guests have to have their hands behind the backs and take bites out of their doughnut while a tall adult holds it up.

I love a children's Halloween party 🤣👻

Last year I did hot dog "fingers", garlic buttered spaghetti with a little bit of green food colouring (witches hair) and halved bananas with chocolate chips for eyes (ghosts). Along with some normal party food! There are lots of simple ideas on Pinterest for fun "spooky" food.

For games I agree that some toilet roll and making each other into mummies as quickly as possible always goes down well and is cheap and simple. Spotify have lots of playlists for music, turn the lights down a bit and have a disco etc.

But if I was hosting at home I would totally do loo roll mummy, pin the nose on the pumpin, disco games with glow in the dark stuff.

Needmorelego · 26/09/2024 18:43

@pilates that seems really obvious.
Silly me 😂

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/09/2024 18:44

Some LED tealights in jars wrapped in tissue paper (red or orange ) dotted about.

Ghosts made from ballonos with white square (old sheet) draw an face and hang it up .

An old doll wrapped in spiderweb , and a giant spider .

Fontainebleau007 · 26/09/2024 18:44

Apple bobbing
Spooky music playing / musical statues
Trick or treat trail around your garden
Prizes for the best costume, scariest etc (make sure all kids do get a prize of some sort of course)
Halloween party food
Maybe some crafts

tarheelbaby · 26/09/2024 18:45

Our village is big into Hallowe'en so we had a few friends round for tea and then hit the streets to trick-or-treat.

SquitMcJit · 26/09/2024 18:45

And definitely the body parts game that @70isaLimitNotaTarget said. With your cold hand grabbing them at the end through the box

NerrSnerr · 26/09/2024 18:45

I'd also make sure you don't host it actually on Halloween as most will probably want to go trick or treating on the day.

We have a group of friends who take it in turns to host a little Halloween party and then go trick or treating together but I'd only do that with parents I know well.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/09/2024 18:49

Eat jelly with no hands , make some small cups of jelly, turned out of a plate and they have to eat them without touching ( obviously must like jelly)

Donoughts on string (no hands)

Cheap dolls , take apart , need to find all the bits and re assemble . Put in cold soapy water for extra effect

A film to wind down while eating . Nightmare Before Christmas

MeganM3 · 26/09/2024 18:49

The floor is lava

ANiceCuppaTeaandBiscuit · 26/09/2024 18:50

Hobbycraft have some great paper mache pumpkins, get a few and some paint, stickers , eyes etc for the kids to decorate.

Buy some Halloween pinatas

Download a Halloween playlist and have a little disco

Get one of those witch potion kits and each child puts something in the cauldron til it bubbles and smokes.

loads of great Halloween snack recipes online!

pilates · 26/09/2024 18:51

@Needmorelego that’s ok. I have such fond memories of Halloween parties my kids (now 20 & 23) still talk about it. Have fun and enjoy 😊

pilates · 26/09/2024 18:52

I think I remember cutting oranges in half scooping out and replacing with raspberry jelly (blood)

mathanxiety · 26/09/2024 18:59

A small pumpkin each to decorate - googly eyes, acrylic paint, glitter glue, etc. It will keep them occupied while you get food set up, after the games are over.

mathanxiety · 26/09/2024 19:10

There are probably printable Halloween bingo cards available online.

A Halloween themed "Would you rather" game would use up some time and you could make it as spooky as you felt they could handle.

Somerandomerontheinternet · 26/09/2024 19:23

Definitely the mummy game. I’ve done biscuit icing which went down well but my all time fave was when made a giant zombie out of cardboard and then cut holes in different sections which I covered in tissue paper. They then had dares to put their hands through the tissue paper to retrieve eg the zombies eyeball (a bouncy ball in a yogurt pot filled with slime) or the zombies heart (which I think was the the the outer bit of a melon etc). Went down a storm!
