Two nights at a sports centre, two hours away

£400 just seems a lot to ask of families. Am I completely out of the loop or is this normal

These amounts are high - what happens to pupils where the parents can’t afford it? Are they left out and embarrassed as they can’t go?

Often schools can subsidised those who can't pay. Not sure about those who won't.

TBH I think what we paid £350 was reasonable value when you consider, transport, food, accommodation, and 20 activities, including things like a hike, kayaking, ropes courses, climbing, raft building.
And the whole experience of getting away without parents having a level of independence before secondary

Normandy144 · 26/09/2024 14:25

Ours is 4 nights and a 3 hour coach journey there and back. It's £400.

Brendabigbaps · 26/09/2024 14:27

£450 for 2 nights in London with a show and a 5hr coach ride each way. That included eating at 2 chain restaurants for dinner each night

Everything is more expensive but in part it pays for those who get financial assistance and the staff.

I would query the cost and see if it can be reduced.

countrysidelife2024 · 26/09/2024 14:34

£200 a night is ridiculous im sorry but no that's really not right in my opinion

fruitpastille · 26/09/2024 14:35

Schools don’t make a profit and staff don’t get paid overtime. It is a lot for two nights though. They should provide a breakdown of costs. Secondary school trips are expensive too ( often abroad) but they are often oversubscribed so there are plenty that can afford it.

SquigglePigs · 26/09/2024 14:48

I thought £400 sounded OK until you said only 2 nights. Seems a bit steep.

BruceLikesCake · 26/09/2024 14:52

My year 6 is going to Holland for 5 nights £480. My year 5 is going skiing in Italy for 6 nights £885. The 2 night residentials they do in year 4 are around the £150 mark. We’re North East England.

MigGril · 26/09/2024 15:01

I think that is way to much for 2 nights. DD did a residential over the summer at an activity center for her Gold DofE it was 5 nights, lots of outdoor activities and only cost £550. Including all food.

If you had said 4 nights then it would have been OK and what I'd expect really but not for 2. I'd be asking the school why the price is so high.

Allnewtometoo · 26/09/2024 15:03

Ours is £240 fir 4 nights. Its about an hour avd half drive away, at an outdoor pursuits type place.

Foxesandsquirrels · 26/09/2024 15:21

Gosh that's a lot for 2 nights but yes everything is so expensive now. It's such a shame as it's probably the reason they don't go away Mon- Fri anymore

mindutopia · 26/09/2024 16:51

Sounds like a lot! I wouldn’t pay £200 a night for me to go away anywhere.

Our Year 6 residential this year was to France (5 nights, Monday-Saturday) including 2 overnight ferries and while it was partly subsidised by an educational grant, cost to parents was just £250 plus €20 spending money.

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 26/09/2024 19:17

Ours was about £200 for 2 nights on a coastal centre

Yellowcarrot · 26/09/2024 19:22

That’s a crazy price. Our yr6 residential was £120 last year for 2nights away.

CeeJay81 · 26/09/2024 19:27

My dd is year 6, they go to an activity centre 45 mins away, not had a letter about it yet. She did the same trip with the Urdd last year and it was £175 for 2 nights I think. £450 is a lot.

Gymmum82 · 26/09/2024 19:30

Y6 is 4 nights at £500. Y4 is 2 nights for £300 at our school

Greyyyybeornot · 26/09/2024 19:31

Ours cost that, but was four nights.

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 26/09/2024 19:33

It’s a lot for two nights. DD13 is going abroad with school next year to a European capital city and the price including flights is only £250 more for 4 nights. It also includes excursions and half board too.
I think the price you’ve been given might have been inflated to include the cost of teachers and any students who can’t afford to pay I would ask for a breakdown of the costs.

Ciclical · 26/09/2024 19:49

Ive put way too much

However my y7 trip last year was like £220 and that was 40 min away -- 2 nights camping! Using school buses as transport
transport
comparitively i think our y6 one wasnt too bad £280 2 nights in bunk houses but 1hr plus away and school dont have their own buses

addictedtotheflats · 26/09/2024 20:02

Ours is free, 2 nights on the east coast all food included. The school receives a lot of funding due to being in a deprived area.

mnahmnah · 26/09/2024 20:17

Ours was £180 for two nights at an outdoor pursuits centre - ropes course, canoeing, raft building etc

Button28384738 · 26/09/2024 20:49

It does seem like a lot - my year 5 DD is going later in the year, 2 nights outdoor activity centre type place about an hour's drive away, £200

Tarantella6 · 26/09/2024 20:52

DD1's Y6 trip was just under £400 but it was 4 nights on IOW, included coach and ferry. And they had a day out at the Needles. So I didn't think that was too bad. That was last year.

LaerealSilverhand · 26/09/2024 20:52

mogtheexcellent · 26/09/2024 13:30

DDs was £450 for 4 nights at a beachside residential centre on the Isle of Wight. under 2 hrs drive and a ferry ride away from us.

Everyone loves Little Canada!

Avocadono · 26/09/2024 20:53

Also depends on time of year. Post-SATS is usually massively more expensive than Jan or Feb (obviously not ideal months for outdoor activities).
