Me and DP are watching Mr McMahon on Netflix and it reminded me that when I was a child me and my sister were really scared of Hulk Hogan. We didn't have a clue about wrestling he was just on a poster at our cousin's house.

I thought Grotbags was hiding in my wardrobe and would come out and get me when I went to bed.

ThoseDarnCrows · 25/09/2024 21:01

Sitting inside the car in a car wash.

PiggieWig · 25/09/2024 21:02

Sausage dogs. There was one that used to escape and chase me and my friend on our rollerskates.

My DD was terrified of the crocodile that lived in the sink drain. As the water drained you could just about see a bubble thingy just inside the drain. She was convinced this was the crocodile's eye, watching her.

Sparklers, absolutely terrified of them. Even when my held her hand next to it to show me the sparks were harmless i’d cry and scream. I was only 4 though and eventually trusted them.

The man in the butchers who made my cry. I refused to go in and would stay outside after that.

BusySittingDown · 25/09/2024 21:10

Oh, I've just remembered - I used to be terrified of the bloke who lived on the corner of our cul-de-sac. My friend had told me that a "bad man" lived in that house.

I was scared to walk anywhere near the house. I would cross the road to walk past etc. My mum thought I'd gone bonkers and wondered what was wrong with me! My mum knew him and he wasn't bad at all. He'd probably told my friend off for being naughty at some point prior. My friend was a mischievous little boy (read little shit 😂).

The window wipers on buses. That scene in Aladdin when Jafar turns into a snake! No idea why because I loved scary stuff. Used to chant Bloody Mary in the school toilets, and as soon as I discovered Ouija boards I was right onto them. But that scene? Had my skin crawling! And I like snakes...I've since owned one!

Stainless steel toilets

Did you see that advert in the 80s with the girl with the bandaged hand from sparklers? That scared me to death!

This thread has reminded me that I was scared of my own shadow as a child. I think I was scared of more things than I wasn't scared of tbh! 😂

The theme tune and opening credits to Tails of the Unexpected!!

Me too!

HÆLTHEPAIN · 25/09/2024 21:14

Wigs! I remember seeing a bit of a film where the baddy lady took a wig off and she was bald underneath. Terrified I was. There used to be a hairdressers on our town high street that also sold jewellery and hair pieces/wigs and I used to have to cross the road.

Not so scared now which is a good job as my daughter had alopecia and lost all her hair!

I remember that but it was the actual spitting sparks I was pooping myself at.

PrincessPeache · 25/09/2024 21:15

That an eagle would fly through an open window and snatch me away.

BashfulClam · 25/09/2024 21:15

The superman film where the woman becomes a robot. Even now that scares the bejeezus out of me.

A lot of the 80’s adverts were scary. I think I remember one about electricity pylons that used to give me the creeps.

abracadabra1980 · 25/09/2024 21:16

Burglars. We had never been burgled. I even got my dad to board my bedroom windows up at one point so nobody could climb in-age about 7/8-now fall asleep with doors open but happily guarded by the two best dogs in the world-one is a rather large breed and her bark is DEEP! I love the feeling of being protected. They are awesome.

Thepossibility · 25/09/2024 21:16

That Jaws was going to swim up the toilet and bite my bum.

Cynic17 · 25/09/2024 21:17

Suits of armour. We visited a lot of castles and stately homes when I was a kid, and I was convinced there was a man inside who was going to kill me.

Came on the thread to say Grotbags

hobbledyhoy · 25/09/2024 21:18

Car washes. Still give me the willies a bit.

Wineat5isfine · 25/09/2024 21:18

Mid eighties kids programme - Chocky. Terrifying!

Daleks from Dr Who.

Grotbags!!

coldcallerbaiter · 25/09/2024 21:18

The beginning of live and let die (Bond) with the snake.

wwyd2021medicine · 25/09/2024 21:18

As a child, I had a dream that I found a mummified baby Jesus in a public toilet at the back of the cubicle on the floor. Then I had to take him round the streets in a cart filled with straw to show to the people.
It disturbs me even now to recall the horror of this and I was frightened of unknown toilet cubicles for years.

Namechange7364 · 25/09/2024 21:18
  1. As a small child, JCBs - I once had a dream that there were dozens of driver-less JCBs circling me in a field and getting closer and closer.
  2. As I got older, vampires, extra-terrestrials, ghosts, pretty much all of the paranormal
  3. Human-like robots
  4. And the bubonic plague - I read a fiction book when I was about 12 about someone digging something up from the black death period and it sparking another pandemic. Was literally terrified for weeks afterwards.

Actually, 2 and 3 still terrify me 😁

Was just about to say this! Still freaks me out a bit watching it
