Me and DP are watching Mr McMahon on Netflix and it reminded me that when I was a child me and my sister were really scared of Hulk Hogan. We didn't have a clue about wrestling he was just on a poster at our cousin's house.

My dad used to have these tiles in his bathroom that looked exactly like the face of a screaming nun with wonky teeth and nobody else could see it but she really freaked me out!

I was also scared of getting sucked into the filters at the edge of the swimming pool- like a pp that one didn’t really make sense size wise!

Evil Edna. Does anybody else remember?

I quite liked The Moog.

BusySittingDown · 25/09/2024 20:53

I was terrified of Alan Bradley in Coronation Street. I must have been about 5/6 and I used to hide behind the sofa when he came on the TV.

The relief when he got hit by that tram 😮‍💨.

The orchard near our new house.

My big sister with the great knowledge of a 7yo decided to tell me about the Yorkshire Ripper. I don't think he did, in her stories, more than jump out and be scary. I didn't know the word "Yorkshire" but "orchard" sounded close enough for me to think it was that. For years I was convinced a scary man lived in it after dark/

Wolves at the top of the stairs.

Dr Who (John Pertwee era)

I know the tiles! Was this in the 70s/80s?

Pippatpip · 25/09/2024 20:56

Dogs with rabies too. I think there was a programme on the tv where someone got bitten and got rabies. I was very wary when we went abroad.

There was a programme called Nationwide and an episode had a think about a primitive effigy that was found in a house - was small and then loads of bad luck woo stuff happened and that terrified me.

My mother drummed into me that you never swallowed chewing gum or silver paper otherwise instant death.

I was quite scared of turning the old tv off for some time. I hate loud noises so was very wary of the volume button. I was really weird! And Miss Potter at school. She was terrifying and I had her for two years running.

toilets
spaghetti
dentists
lifts
escalators

shugarsuz · 25/09/2024 20:56

Quicksand
Quarry water pools (never even saw one!)
The naughty children's home (mum would threaten to call them)
Sharks in our local swimming pool (obv never happened)

TFthatsover · 25/09/2024 20:57

"The Entertainer" song. Used to hide when it was played on TV and still sends shivers down me. Always sounded threatening to me but I can't work out why.

Legitimate fear! My DP put his hand in a filter at the bottom of the pool when he was little, got stuck and lost consciousness because nobody spotted him for a few minutes. He remembers waking up to his teacher losing the plot because they thought he was dead. Still utterly terrified of swimming, even putting his head back in the bath scares him because of the whooshing of water in his ears Sad

Yorkshiredolls · 25/09/2024 20:57

The flipping millennium bug. I remember the countdown to certain Armageddon and then… nothing?

Cupofteaformeee · 25/09/2024 20:57

Quicksand and escalators

Whisperingangel1 · 25/09/2024 20:58

Balloons (still am)

Quicksand and Pylons thanks to all those educational videos they made us watch in school about getting stuck in quicksand or electrocuted. I was also scared of the christmas tree lights catching fire so spent most of Christmas turning those off.😂

The dark (still am)
Seaweed - horrible!

GalaticalFarce · 25/09/2024 20:59

I was terrified of spontaneously combusting after a read a book about strange things that included a chapter on it.

FixTheBone · 25/09/2024 21:00

Sound of the toilet flushing... I used to get into a sprint position, pull the chain and run full pelt, dive into bed and pull the covers on.

TulipTuesday · 25/09/2024 21:00

Kenny Everett

Marmite27 · 25/09/2024 21:00

The toilet flushing noise.

Needmorelego · 25/09/2024 21:00

Dustcarts.
Hated having to walk past one and if I was in the car I would close my eyes while we drove past.

Theblessedchild · 25/09/2024 21:00

I was hoping somebody else had already said drums so I wouldn't be the only one...hated a marching band, the sound in the distance, getting closer and louder, remember running and crying a lot when I heard them....Still get a little tummy flutter now and 😬🤣

Inapickle1714 · 25/09/2024 21:00

Littleguggi · 25/09/2024 21:01

Yorkshiredolls · 25/09/2024 21:01

also I remember a rumour at school that Nostradamus had predicted the world would end in 1997 or some shit like that and I spent the whole year worrying the end was nigh but nearly 30 years later we’re still here, phew!

FixTheBone · 25/09/2024 21:01

My daughter says carrying a drink with a straw, falling, and skewering her eyeball.... 😮
