What toy do you refuse to allow in the house?

Here it’s slime. There’s no need for it and it’s just a load of mess. I don’t want it all mashed into the carpet which my 9 year old would do. He is the type who would also leave it somewhere, then staining and ruining stuff

Bouncy balls. My kids get absolutely obsessed and they go every where, smash into things, end up on the hob etc. Any bouncy balls that get snuck in get weirdly lost over night... Something to do with the cat I think 🤔

LOL Dolls. Dd1 was brought a small one for Christmas unfortunately, it changed colour when you put it in water. Except the outfit revealed was black stocking and suspenders and this sort of criss-crossed black bra. Inexplicable choice for a toy. Along with all the pointless plastic wrapping of the ones in the plastic balls to 'unbox' I just won't allow them to have any.

GigiAnnna · 25/09/2024 18:23

Kinetic sand. Just gets everywhere except where it's meant to go.

Anything with Peppa pig on.

Used to be slime, but she'll happily keep it on a tray now and is sensible enough with it so I've relented.

Urm wrong thread. We are talking about toys

100% agree - no slime or putty in this house. Oh, and kinetic sand

The kids know, and don't push their luck.

I'm fine with washable messy play, but nothing that gets embedded in hair or carpets please.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 25/09/2024 20:25

My son is only a toddler so some of these aren’t relevant to him. He’s the only grandchild on both sides and people buy him toys all the time. I’ve always let him play with most things but I had to forbid people from buying him baby walkers or bouncers. They are bad for development and I’ve never liked them from years of working with young children and seeing how often they cause injuries. My mum especially was determined to buy him a walker and I had to tell her I would just immediately get rid of it.

birdglasspen2 · 25/09/2024 21:08

I’m glad to hear of the boys who play with weapons and don’t turn into gun firing maniacs. My eldest in particular is really into weapons, I don’t think denying him would have helped in the slightest. I’m confident he will grow out of it. I’d prefer toy weapons to screen time or Xboxes any day. I feel desperately sad for his friends who aren’t allowed Lego because of the mess, they exist in a house with toys that are way too young for them and I expect will progress to more and more screen time instead of playing. No mess ….except in the children’s heads….

Soubriquet · 25/09/2024 21:30

See we were odd. We didn’t like slime but kinetic sand was fine. It hoovered up ok so it was allowed

I only ever confiscated one present from either of my children - a Barbie lipgloss making kit given to one of my daughters when she was about 6.

I took it away and gave her something else instead. I had originally planned to regift it, but I was too embarrassed and didn't want anyone to think that I thought it was a suitable gift.

I couldn't even bear the idea of giving it to a charity shop, so just threw it away.

I wouldn't have allowed guns either, but no-one ever gave them one. They did have water pistols though.

TheChosenTwo · 25/09/2024 21:35

Haha my dc2 had (unbeknownst to us) set up something of a slime factory in her room and was distributing it to her friends 😂
I can’t think of any toys that were banned from our house, we’re pretty relaxed and never felt the need to enforce rules about toys but I wasn’t sad when a toy drum kit was damaged beyond repair!

stayathomer · 25/09/2024 21:37

Adore kinetic sand and play doh but kinetic rock is the stuff of hell to clean up. Even the kids hated it😅

coxesorangepippin · 25/09/2024 21:38

Glitter

Any musical instruments

DS once made a gun out of a slice of toast by nibbling it 😂now he's a 13yo animal-loving pacifist.

We don't have carpets, so slime was fine, as was play doh. He never took any interest in glitter or kinetic sand, thank god.

Anything that needed big batteries, like those big square Ds, or pissy little C-something watch batteries. We never bought anything that needed them, but were given some as gifts.

The worst thing he has is a wooden train whistle - wood, who knew?!

My 11 year old made a gun using paper folded, it was quite impressive but I didn't know whether to say well done due to the skill or tell him off for promoting violent ideology. It even had a spring mechanism to do the pull back thing (very technical) using an elastic band. Nerf has been hidden. Glitter hidden. DH was going to work covered in it long after clean up was done.

Ineedanewsofa · 25/09/2024 21:49

Aqua beads! They come in stupid little packets that don’t reseal (presumably so you feel obligated to buy the expensive storage box) and are the most fiddly things ever
Also, not an inside toy, but trampolines! Accidents waiting to happen, I know so many people who’s kids have ended up in A&E after a trampoline accident

LittleGreenDuck · 25/09/2024 21:51

Loom bands after DS fell asleep with one wrapped around his finger. Luckily I noticed when I went in to tuck him in, before his finger fell off. Also, they get EVERYWHERE.

WhereAreAllTheOddSocks · 25/09/2024 21:52

No guns and swords

Slime , playdoh table only.

Glitter crafts are done in the garden

Not keen on marbles tbh

MeMyselfIgor · 25/09/2024 21:54

Tablets

Needmorelego · 25/09/2024 14:42

Toy guns that look like real guns. Why anyone wants their child to play with a toy AK-47 or whatever is baffling to me.

This, because guns are not play things.

Onemorepenny · 25/09/2024 21:57

That VTech crawl and learn ball, a purchase I should have never made. It disappeared not long after.

Marbles are not welcome, nor gun like toys.

Not a fan of most of the Peppa pig stuff.

Nellieinthebarn · 25/09/2024 22:02

Oh God I've just remembered those wretched tamogotchis, or however you spell it. My two bought them with their own money, and the bloody things kept dying because they were banned from school. Take my advice, save yourselves, if they come back into fashion ban them from the house!

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 25/09/2024 22:03

Harmonicas
Glitter
Kinetic sand

Paint was banned for several years after an incident, but has now been reinstated.

I didn't ban slime and regretted it.

LostMySocks · 25/09/2024 22:06

Sticks.... have to be kept in the garden
Sticks longer or thicker than your arm stay in the park or wood..

C152 · 25/09/2024 22:09

Nerf guns. Or any type of gun that fires actual bullets, regardless of what they're made out of.
