Realistically can anything be done to stop parents parking across driveway?

I live on the same street as a school. Every single day someone blocks our driveway and I’m at a point now where I’m getting super fed up of it! 😩 It is mostly the same woman, who on multiple occasions has been asked to stop but it’s like it falls on deaf ears and she feels entitled somehow to still park there.

I wouldn’t actually mind but my eldest has severe additional needs and will NOT walk any distance from the car to the house so it’s super important we are parked on the drive, which isn’t possible when she (or someone else) has swanned off to stand at the school gates to wait for her child. I mean, not like I need an excuse really, it’s my drive and I should be able to use it. The time the drive is blocked is ALWAYS when I’m getting back from picking up my son from school.

Realistically if I were to go in to the school with number plates, especially this one woman, is there anything they can do? Or anything anybody else can do? Sorry I know there’s worse problems to have but I’ve just had a baby 4 weeks a go, have a 20 month old, along with my eldest with ASD, I am trying my damn hardest every day and sick of arseholes making life even harder.

Also if the driver remains in the car this really isn't an issue if anyone needs to exit enter then they just pull away. If they are parking and leaving car then that is a different issue and is unreasonable.

Africa2go · 24/09/2024 17:18

Actually, you may find the school is totally on board with this. Most schools depend on a very good relationship with the local residents / community.

Our primary school had a number of completely entitled drivers and there were regularly "please park considerately" messages / emails from school.

When that didn't work, to keep the local community on board, they started printing photographs of the offending cars in the school's weekly newsletter - which as you can imagine prompted class Whatsapp groups to explode with messages like "Hey, X, isn't that your car in the newsletter Wink" and "Guess X was in a rush again this morning - followed by some emoji" That quickly stopped it.

You're unreasonable here I am afraid. Houses close to schools in this way are often discounted value wise due to noise/inconsiderate parking issues so you had your compensation in the discounted price you paid for the house!

Really ? Houses round here are worth more being beside the local school !

You pay extra for off road parking and therefore should be able to use it at all times.
Have a word with the school, they might put a reminder in the school newsletter.
Have you spoken to this woman ? Has she refused to move ? If so next step is notes on the windows and photos on local Facebook page.

You're wrong. It is never OK to park like the parent in the OP.

As for "compensation" what utter, utter nonsense!

Chenecinquantecinq · 24/09/2024 17:20

Were they leaving their car? Or were they sat in the car and therefore able to drive out the way if required? Key difference.

Not in most areas where catchments are shrinking - you actually pay a hefty premium to be close to an outstanding school.

LlynTegid · 24/09/2024 17:20

I could think of something but it is not legal.

A few damaged cars would stop that fairly quickly.

It says in the op - she’s gone off to stand at the school gates.

Close yes but not in roads immediately adjacent to schools where parking would occur at pick up/drop off. I am RICS Red Book qualified btw!

@PrettyPickle How will a bollard on your drive stop someone parking on the road?

I don't know the layout of her drive in relation to where the car parks (left my crystal ball at home 😅so it was just one option.

SallySesame · 24/09/2024 17:23

Publicity is the only thing that gets people like this to stop.

Photo of her and car and information that she’s stopping a disabled child accessing their home and keeps doing it despite polite requests from you, shared via local Facebook group. I’d also get a parent you know at that school to circulate the same information on the class WhatsApp groups.

OopsyDaisie · 24/09/2024 17:23

Is it ab actual driveway (as in, dropped kerb)? If so contact school.
I ask because I see loads of people park their cars in front of their houses as if it wss a driveway but actually the kerb is raised... in which case I think YABU as anyone is allowed to park there.....
Last time, near our school, I actually saw a resident speaking to a police officer (who had gone to the school to speak to the kids classes) because they couldn't move their car as the Polica car had parked in front, and they were saying "it's a raised kerb so you're taking a risk or being blocked yourself".....
ETA: if it is indeed a dropped kerb the school should sort it! Ours shame people who park this way by publishing the photos of the cars on the newsletter!

martinisforeveryone · 24/09/2024 17:23

@Chenecinquantecinq the issue isn't the value or price of the house with it being near a school, the issue is that it has an off road driveway that the OP is entitled to access and the parent, who, as you can read, does not stay in her vehicle to move as required, is anti social. Strictly the unfettered access is off the driveway rather than back on to it, but it's a shitty move to constantly block it while standing chatting, particularly once aware that it's not a driveway that remains empty at that time of day.

Well this is unreasonable yes, however it's amazing the number of home owners who get annoyed at people sitting in their cars and clearly able to move to allow access if necessary. Almost as though they wish they didn't live next to the school they were clearly well aware of when moving in 😁

HowardTJMoon · 24/09/2024 17:30

People who park across driveways while waiting for little Annunziata and Wulfric are the kind of anti-social lout who drops litter out of their car window and hangs bags of dog poo on bushes.

@Chenecinquantecinq are you the person parking across the OP's driveway?

Icedlatteofdreams · 24/09/2024 17:30

If it's an actual driveway with a dropped curb take the numberplate to the school.

As pp though around our school none of the driveways are in actual fact driveways as they have raised curbs. I don't park in front of them but plenty of people do and it's quite legal.

Get your neighbours on board and one infront, one behind and block her in so she can’t leave. Don’t move for hours.

Yes do this!! That'll teach her

The CF is parking on the road, not on the OP's drive. You don't need a crystal ball, just reading and comprehension skills.

Jellyslothbridge · 24/09/2024 17:36

I would wait untill she returns and make sure she sees you taking a photo of the number plate. I think that alone would put someone off parking there but if not you have something to use with school/police.

Can you not block her in and prevent her from driving away?

Yes but legally that would be vandalism and the car owner knows where she lives.
